At the heart of the story is the dramatic tension between noblest intentions and the politics, hubris, and ideology that are the bedrock of New York. Presented in collaboration with the Municipal Art Society. The film will be shown at Tribeca Cinemas on Friday, October 19, and Sunday, October 21. Q&A with the filmmakers and others 9:15 pm, Theater 1; 9:30 pm, Theater 2: The Vignellis Design is One: Lella & Massimo Vignelli Directed by Kathy Brew and Roberto Guerra (2012) 80 min; English, USA; World Premiere This film is an intimate view of Italian-born Lella and Massimo Vignelli, who are among the world s most influential and highly acclaimed designers. Their work, which encompasses a diversity of types and styles, is known across the globe, even if many people don t know their names. Throughout their career, the Vignellis motto has been, If you can t find it, design it. Their achievements in industrial and product design; graphic and publication design; corporate identity programs; architectural graphics; and exhibition, interior, and furniture design have earned numerous national and international awards over four decades. Q&A with the directors VIEW BY DATE & TIME FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19th 5:00 pm, Theater 2: The Creative Process From Nothing, Something Directed by Tim Cawley (2012) 79 min; English, USA; New York Premiere Everyone has ideas, but where do they come from, and what ensures that they keep coming? How does one sort the ingenious ideas from useless ones? And why invest all this hope and energy into making things in the first place? From Nothing, Something profiles creative thinkers across numerous disciplines to examine individual methods, habits, beliefs, and neuroses that have lead to breakthroughs. This is a thoughtful, intimate, often funny look at the creative process from some of our culture s most accomplished and inspiring talents.

3 The Lighthouse Directed by Martin Glegg (2012) 12 min; English, Scotland; U.S. Premiere This short follows a group of young architects as they embark on constructing a lighthouse on a beautiful remote Scottish island. The film highlights the growing gap between digital design and getting one s hands dirty. Q&A with Tim Cawley, director, From Nothing, Something 7:00 pm, Theater 1: Only in NY 16 Acres Directed by Richard Hankin (2012) 93 min; English, USA; U.S. Premiere See Thursday, October 18. The Standard, NY Directed by Catherine Camille Cushman and Stephen Blaise (2011) 6 min; English, USA Architect Todd Schliemann, of Ennead Architects, discusses the process and context for the design and construction of The Standard Hotel, in New York City. Q&A with director and filmmakers of 16 Acres 7:15 pm, Theater 2: Long Island Modern Modern Tide: Midcentury Architecture on Long Island Directed by Jake Gorst (2012) 86 min; English, USA Modern Tide: Midcentury Architecture on Long Island explores the Long Island work of some of the greatest postwar architects and designers, including Albert Frey, Wallace Harrison, Herbert Beckhard, Frank Lloyd Wright, Horace Gifford, Edward Durrell Stone, Marcel Breuer, Andrew Geller, Philip Johnson, Charles Gwathmey, and Barbara and Julian Neski, among others. The film features interviews with architects and historians, as well as with friends, families, and clients of these influential designers. Both rare archival material and present-day high-definition cinematography reveal Long Island s often underappreciated modernist treasures, many of which have disappeared due to redevelopment or natural disasters. Newtown Creek Digester Eggs: The Art of Human Waste Directed by David W. Leitner (2011) 3 min; English, USA The Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, epitomizes what can be achieved when progressive government works with local activists to adopt the latest technology. The plant s digester eggs egg-shaped structures that process large amounts of sludge have won awards for their design; they were made possible by New York City s Percent for Art program. Q&A with director Jake Gorst and others; moderated by architect Tomas Rossant

4 9:15 pm, Theater 1: Culture Statements. Mission Statements: The Architecture of Dutch Diplomacy Directed by Jord den Hollander (2011) 60 min; Dutch with English subtitles, Netherlands In 1991, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands decided to promote national architecture abroad by building new embassies designed by prominent Dutch architects. The buildings were a testament to highly original architecture, while also representing Dutch diplomacy. International critics wrote enthusiastically about this mission-driven architecture, and many of the designs were rewarded with prizes. In 2007, for example, the Dutch embassy in Addis Ababa received a prestigious Aga Khan Award. Paraiso Directed by Nadav Kurtz (2012) 10 min; Spanish with English subtitles, USA This short film follows three immigrant window-cleaners who risk their lives every day rappelling down some of Chicago s tallest sky-scrapers. Machine for Life Directed by Ruth Somalo (2012) 3 min; English, USA; World Premiere Inspired by a series of conversations about architecture between filmmaker Ruth Somalo and designer Suchi Reddy, this short film draws on Le Corbusier s concept of the mechanized and his ideas on the relationship among architecture, design, experience, and emotion. In the film, a space traveler arrives in a 375-square-foot apartment, which sets the scene for a tantalizing love story. Q&A with Mission Statements director Jord den Hollander 9:30 pm, Theater 2: West Coast Modern Coast Modern Directed by Gavin Froome and Mike Bernard (2012) 75 min; English, USA; New York Premiere Traveling along the Pacific Northwest coastline from Los Angeles to Vancouver, this documentary showcases the pioneers of West Coast modernist architecture and the houses that have become their legacies. In the Amsterdam train station, he and his wife bumped into an acquaintance, the head of Germany s largest architectural firm in the Netherlands, and told him that he was re-locating his office. As the film recounts, this would not be the last time that Mendelsohn would start over in a foreign land. The Invisible Bicycle Helmet Directed by Fredrik Gertten (2012) 3 min; Swedish with English subtitles, Sweden Design students Anna and Terese took on a giant challenge as an exam project. It is a major event that represents the school s commitment to sharing idea-driven work with a broad audience in Los Angeles and around the globe. During two days in June, RUMBLE brings together critics, alumni, faculty, and friends to consider a broad range of rigorous research and speculation created by its students over the academic year. It offers acclaimed theater; improvisational comedy; classical music; jazz, blues, and hip hop artists; and eminent writers. But Chicago is best understood through its architecture. In 1999, founding principals Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio were awarded a prestigious genius prize by the MacArthur Foundation in recognition of their commitment to integrating architecture with issues of contemporary culture. This film examines the process by which the firm re- imagined the public identities of two major New York City spaces.
