1 Descendants of Ralph and Bridget McCORMICK Generation No Raphael (Ralph 1 ) McCormick: b. 1804/05 in Ireland; d. September 18, 1893; married Bridget McGinley, b. 1806/07 in Ireland; d. March 25, Census records indicate that Ralph and Bridget McCormick left Ireland and immigrated to Canada in These records do not conclusively give dates of birth for either Ralph or Bridget but suggest that the couple were born in the early 1800s and that Ralph was 2 years older than Bridget. The Saint John Globe, The Daily Telegraph and The Daily News (Saint John newspapers in the 1870s) all reported that Bridget died at age 72, on Tuesday, March 25, 1879 at her home on Kennebecasis Island. Her funeral was held 2 days later. Ralph s death was reported as follows in the September 20, 1893 issue of the Saint John Daily Sun : d. Kennebecasis Island (Kings Co.) Sept. 18 th, Ralph McCormick, age 88 years. Funeral from his residence this day, Wednesday at 11 o clock. Ferry steamer Maggie Miller will leave Milledgeville at 10:30 o clock to attend the funeral. By deed, dated April 12, 1843, Ralph received 50 acres of land on Kennebecasis Island. Ralph s brother, John, had received 30 acres of land on the same island in December Because of the presence of the McCormicks, Kennebecasis Island was often called McCormick s Island. McCormick House, overlooking McCormick s Cove on the south side of the island, dates from the late 1830s and was home to Ralph and Bridget and their children. Kennebecasis Island, in Kings County, New Brunswick, was for many years part of Westfield Parish. The Milkish Channel separates the Island from the Kingston Peninsula. The Island is also a short distance by ferry from the City of Saint John. The names Kennebecasis, Kings, Westfield, Milkish and Saint John all appear in archival records (birth, marriage, death, newspaper articles) related to Ralph McCormick and his descendants. Ralph and John s sister, Grace, and her husband, George McGarrigle (also spelled McGeragle), lived near Kennebecasis Island on the Kingston Peninsula, near the village of Milkish. George and Grace immigrated to New Brunswick from Ireland in In the 1851 New Brunswick census, George s age is recorded as 57 and Grace s as 45. They had 9 children, born between 1832 and 1850.

2 Children of Ralph McCormick and Bridget McGinley 2. i. Samuel 2 McCormick: b. 1830/31 in Ireland; d. November 26, 1900 Records do not establish an exact date of birth for Samuel. However, the January 1861 Canada Census records Samuel s age as 29 and indicates that he was born in Ireland and immigrated to Canada with his parents in May Therefore, Samuel must have been born in early A document in the New Brunswick Provincial Archives (hereinafter the archives ) shows his date of death as November 26, 1900 and his age at the time as 67. However, this is probably an error and his actual age at death was likely 69. ii. Patrick McCormick: b. 1835/36; d. April 17, 1892 The Saint John Daily Sun reported that Patrick died on April 17, 1892, age 56, and that those who wished to attend his funeral could board the steamer Clifton leaving Indiantown at 9:30 am on the morning of Wednesday, April 20. The April 21 issue of the newspaper reported as follows: The funeral of the late Patrick McCORMICK, brother of Hugh J. McCORMICK, took place at the Chapel yesterday. About 150 persons went up from the city in the steamer Clifton to attend the funeral. The boat stopped at McCormick s cove and took the body on board and proceeded to Chapel Grove. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Wynn. The remains were interred in the Chapel Grove burial ground. However, records for St. Bridget s cemetery in Chapel Grove do not list Patrick McCormick as being buried there. Patrick was single. iii. John McCormick: drowned off McCormick s Cove before 1851 (not listed in 1851 census; date of birth is unknown although he was younger than his brother Samuel). 3. iv. Ralph 2 McCormick: b. Charles A. 2 McCormick: b. July 18, 1849; d. July 13, 1922 ix. Hugh J. McCormick: b. late February 1854 (baptised on March 14, 1854 at about 3 weeks of age); d. August 28, 1910; m. Sarah Waddell (b. August 18, 1864; d. September 22, 1932) on June 29, 1887 at St. Peter s Church (married by Rev. Fr. Wynn). Hugh and Sarah had no children. Hugh McCormick was a speed skater who skated professionally between 1883 and In 1883 he became New Brunswick champion and by 1885 was both Maritime and North American champion. In 1887 he set

3 world records for distances of 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 miles. In 1890 Hugh became world professional champion after defeating the reigning world champion, Axel Paulsen of Norway, in a series of races in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Hugh was elected to the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in Hugh married Sarah (Sadie) Waddell, the only daughter of James Waddell of Kings County, on June 29, The Saint John Daily Telegraph reported on the wedding in its June 30, 1887 issue: Hugh J. McCORMICK, champion skater, was quietly married yesterday morn. in St. Peter s church to Miss Waddell. Sarah s family owned and operated a saw mill, furniture factory and hotel (the Willows) at Reed s Point on the Kingston Peninsula side of the Kennebecasis River, opposite Gondola Point. Some of the trim on McCormick House was produced at the Waddell furniture factory. For a time, Hugh and Sarah managed the Willows. They later moved to Sussex and then to Saint John where they operated the Three Mile House hotel on the eastern edge of the City. Hugh died in August Twelve years later, on September 26, 1922, Sarah married Charles Thomas Gallagher (b. September 15, 1885; d. June 4, 1927). Charles was an artist who was born in Boston, MA. January 2, 1975 Ralph and Catherine s marriage was announced in the January 12, 1875 issue of the Saint John Morning Freeman where Catherine is referred to as Cassie Furlong. Catherine s name appears in the 1871 Canada Census where her age is given as 18 and she is listed as living with her family in Saint John s Sydney Ward. Her parents were Tom and Elizabeth Furlong, and Tom was a tavern keeper. However, the marriage registration certificates for Catherine s children all show her maiden name as McGinnis rather than Furlong. The only reference to Furlong in these documents is where Bridget gives her mother s name as Catherine (McGinnis) Furlong and where Charles has written Catherine Furlong McGinnis. No documents have been found which explain the origin of McGinnis for Catherine s maiden name. Her death registration in the archives records her married name as McCormick and her maiden name as Furlong. Ralph purchased land on Kennebecasis Island adjacent to that of his father. Based on available property record information, it appears that Ralph owned as much as 100 acres on the south side of the Island, east of his father s property. After their marriage, Ralph and Catherine lived on Spar Cove Road in the Pokiok

5 area of Saint John s North End near Ralph s brother, Samuel. However, by at least 1881 (see Canada Census), Ralph and Catherine were living on Kennebecasis Island and they lived there throughout the 1880s and 1890s. Ralph appears twice in the 1901 Canada Census records - he is listed as living with his family in Saint John s North End and also as living on Kennebecasis Island. The census documents record Ralph s occupation as dock builder. After Catherine s death in 1904, Ralph left New Brunswick to live in Boston. There is no evidence that any of Ralph s children went with him. In Boston, on November 3, 1907, Ralph married Sarah J. Morris. Sarah was the daughter of Edward Morris and Bridget Kerr, both Irish immigrants, and she was about 55 years of age at the time of her marriage. The marriage document in the Massachusetts archives indicates that Ralph was marrying for the second time while it was Sarah s first marriage. Ralph s occupation is recorded as dock builder. Ralph returned to Saint John in June of 1910, possibly to attend the wedding of his daughter, Bridget. Sarah did not accompany him. Ralph seems to have remained in New Brunswick after 1910 since at the time of the 1911 Canada Census, he was again living on Kennebecasis Island. In 1911, Ralph s son, William, was working in Newcastle, New Brunswick, while his other children, Charles, James and Teresa, were living with their sister Bridget and her husband, John Griffith, at 285 Main St. in Saint John. Ralph died in 1914 and is buried at St. Bridget s cemetery in Chapel Grove, not far from Kennebecasis Island. June 10, 1893 The June 13, 1893 issue of the Saint John Daily Telegraph reported Charles death: Charles, the 16 year old s/o Charles McCORMICK and nephew of Hugh McCORMICK, died suddenly on Sunday. He went to

6 ii. iii. iv. Milkish on Saturday to fish and while there Sunday was stricken with the cramps. Hugh McCormick rode for a physician with all speed but before he returned the lad had expired. He was interred from a relative s residence at the North End yesterday. The article gives Charles age as 16, but he could not have been more than 9. Charles may have died from a ruptured appendix. They were still living on Kennebecasis Island in 1911 when the Canada Census was taken (March 31) but within a few years had left the island and moved to 3 Harvey St. in Saint John s North End. They were living on Harvey St. in 1919 and 1920 when Marguerite, Ellen and Elizabeth were married and in 1922 when Charles passed away. The 1923 Saint John City Directory contains a listing on Harvey St. for Elizabeth McCormick and her children, Frank, Catherine and Alice. Most of the McCormick children eventually left New Brunswick for the United States. Catherine, Marion, Alice, Lillian and Ruth immigrated to the U.S. in the 1920s. At the time of the 1930 U.S. census, the five McCormick sisters were living together in Cambridge, MA. Frank and Ralph immigrated to the U.S. in June Ralph lived for many years in Poughkeepsie, NY.
