2018: From the President Following the enormous success of the inaugural London Design Biennale, we are delighted to welcome applications from countries, cities and territories for our 2018 edition, 4 23 September. The nations of the world created an outstanding exhibition of ideas and ingenuity for the inaugural London Design Biennale, and following 2016 s enormous success, the Biennale is firmly established as a new highlight of the cultural calendar. The 2018 edition will bring the best international design thinking back to London's world stage illustrating how design can challenge, engage, educate and surprise audiences. Exhibiting nations will form an international network of global design countries and cities, each invited to take part to celebrate their unique cultural identity in the field of design. And the importance of design is rapidly increasing design brings about positive social change and economic growth. The London Design Biennale enables valuable government, business and public connections, and for each design contribution to be presented at the highest international level. The Biennale will return to the grand network of historic galleries at Somerset House for 2018, with up to 50 participating countries invited to exhibit exceptional and original design installations in response to the theme, 'Emotional States' (see page 14). The International Advisory Committee and Jury, composed of leading creative experts worldwide, will award Medals to the most outstanding national contributions. The London Design Biennale has established itself as a place where innovative design concepts are trialled, where research and debate ignite, and where important international collaborations and creative partnerships are born. We look forward to working with you. SIR JOHN SORRELL CBE PRESIDENT, LONDON DESIGN BIENNALE 10 11

2018 Theme Emotional States Director s Statement & Theme The theme for 2018, Emotional States, looks to provoke a broad interpretation across design disciplines, interrogating how design affects every aspect of our lives the way we live and how we live but can also influence our very being, our emotionsand experiences. Biennale Director, Dr Christopher Turner, asks countries to address the theme from a diversity of viewpoints; variation and difference in design identities should be explored in countries proposals and designs

2018 Theme Building on our 2016 theme, Utopia by Design, the second edition of the Biennale will explore Emotional States. Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence Aristotle Emotions are universal, with shared meanings that transcend borders. Thoughtful design and technology can create positive emotional experiences, facilitating new social possibilities by enabling connectivity and contact, and the forging of meaningful connections between people. The discipline is at the forefront of change-making, with architects and designers working imaginatively to try and create positive conditions for human flourishing, and we hope countries and territories will explore such socially responsive designs here. But for every problem designers solve, inevitably more are created. In their installations and exhibits, design teams are encouraged to examine the full spectrum of emotional experience, from anger to surprise, sadness to disgust, and to propose radical and provocative ideas that transcend aesthetics. Amongst other questions, national entries might ask: How can design evoke, visualise, communicate and manipulate emotions? How can designers help strengthen citizen and community engagement by encouraging positive feelings, promoting and supporting well-being? Conversely, how can design provoke and address negative affects, such as anger and stress? What are the possible consequences of creating robots that are emotional machines? How can we create emotionally durable designs that increase sustainability and reduce the impact of consumption and waste? In 2016 the International Jury, impressed by the range and diversity of responses to the inaugural theme, considered the most successful installations to be those that addressed the specificity of a country s design history, and what could be learned from it. Also, the immersive and interactive (and sometimes playful) exhibits that really sought to engage an audience. The theme, Emotional States, offers numerous possibilities to explore the sensorial qualities of design, with visceral exhibits and experiences that evoke moods and explore a particular country s design story. Together they will present an exciting laboratory of ideas that will investigate the important relationship between design, strong emotional responses and real social needs

Exhibition Spaces The beautifully restored galleries at Somerset House vary in size, from rooms of approximately 30m 2 to spaces over 100m 2 All dedicated exhibition spaces offer participating countries or cities the opportunity to exhibit in one of London s leading venues. Gallery spaces can be linked, interconnecting to create a suite of larger rooms to cater for all space requirements. There are also some dramatic external areas available as outdoor exhibition space within the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court, on the Riverside Terrace, overlooking the Thames, and in the courtyard space outside the grand entrance on Lancaster Place. The London Design Biennale Project Team will work collaboratively with participating countries and cities to match participants with the most effective exhibition space at Somerset House to meet the requirements of their design proposal and budget. We highly recommend visiting Somerset House to gain a full understanding of the potential of each space to best complement design proposals. Please let us know if you would like to arrange a tour of the exhibition spaces available. 20 INDONESIA FREEDOME by Indonesia Agency for Creative Economy 21

2018: Applications The London Design Biennale invites proposals from countries, cities and territories worldwide. Each country will be responsible for the appointment and commissioning of their own representative Design Team. Proposals submitted on behalf of countries can be made by embassies, design councils, government ministries, national museums, designers, or universities. Only one official national entry will be accepted to represent each individual country, so the submitted proposal must be fully acknowledged, supported and endorsed by a recognised national organisation, such as a national design council, government department, embassy or national museum. Reflecting the diversity of design practice, we welcome and recognise the many ways designers and their supporting institutions work. If you have any questions about eligibility please do contact us. The following pages lay out the design proposal requirements, application process, responsibilities and timeline to take part in the London Design Biennale AUSTRALIA PLASTIC EFFECTS by Brodie Neill 27

Exhibiting countries or cities are asked to submit proposals for an exceptional and original design installation in response to the 2018 theme, Emotional States. The London Design Biennale embraces all design disciplines, and installations could reference one, or even multiple disciplines. This includes product design, graphic and typographical, industrial, architecture, interior, engineering and system design among others. Design installations should be curated works that are able to engage, or even interact, with the London Design Biennale s visitors. Installations should be newly commissioned for this purpose, and should not have been shown elsewhere. Whilst the installation might include objects made for production, the installation in total should be a unique and stand-alone work. Installations may be a single work or a collection of works. The exhibition should not be presented as a trade showcase. Selected proposals will be those that best address the theme in a way that specifically references or connects with the country s own design history; those that engage with audiences in a way that inspires or challenges them to interact with the ideas presented in the installation; and those that respond to the theme to show the important role or potential of design. Installations should be site-specific for the galleries and rooms at the Biennale s venue. Design Teams must also be sympathetic to the historic fabric of Somerset House as a listed venue in their production, installation and fixing. Installations may vary in size, from the intimate and domestic, to the more architectural. The Biennale Project Team will discuss any feasibility issues relating to proposals, including install and deinstall timeframes. It will be necessary for design installations to be constructed off site, packed for shipping and rebuilt in situ at Somerset House during the London Design Biennale installation period. The timeline is designed to allow for the evolution of Design Team s proposals, it is also possible to host open calls for ideas many countries did this for For the initial application, proposals that seek to hold a national competition or invited applications from local design teams are welcome. The Design Teams and Commissioning Bodies that form the national entry must be able to demonstrate experience delivering large scale projects on an international stage. Design Teams will be asked to submit examples of previous work and experience via the online application process, opening in January

Responsibilities The London Design Biennale will work collaboratively with Design Teams for the coordination and installation of their exhibitions at the venue. EACH COUNTRY WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR: All research, conception and design; The complete funding of their participation at the London Design Biennale, including all expenses incurred by the project. We expect that each country may wish to appoint a commercial sponsor in order to fully fund the project; Sourcing, fabrication & production of all exhibition materials; All aspects of project management and delivery; Packing and shipping; Insurance (including Public Liability Insurance); Ensuring that all project deadlines set by the London Design Biennale are met; Securing permissions for any exhibition materials used and clearing any copyrighted material for use. 30 AUSTRIA LEVEL by mischer traxler studio As a condition of installing onsite, due to the venue s unique historical status, participating teams will be required to work with approved contractors for certain aspects of their installation. Any other contractors employed by participant countries or cities and used in the on-site coordination, installation and de-install must be approved in advance, and their actions may be restricted to work that does not affect the fabric of the galleries. It is a condition of participating that each team has an experienced project manager, responsible for delivering the project. This should be clearly stated in your application, and this person must serve as the responsible party for coordinating information between Design Teams and Commissioning Bodies, between Design Teams and the London Design Biennale, and between contractors and Design Teams. Given the number of parties involved in projects like this, it is critical to have a single point of contact that is able to deliver the technical and operational aspects of the project. 31

Participation Fees & Agreement Participation fees to the London Design Biennale are dependent on the size of the allocated exhibition area and its relative location within the venue. Fees are scaled to reflect these distinctions. An initial deposit will be due in June 2017, along with the Agreement. The remainder of the participation fee will be invoiced in November These payments are designed to secure your space within the Biennale, and to provide sufficient time to match country or sponsor budget calendar allocations. It is important to consider that the participation fee only represents one part of the financial obligations of taking part. Please do not hesitate to be in touch with us with any questions regarding the application process, the nature of your proposal, queries about the theme or the spaces available.
