2 Reflections from Klehm 2016 was a busy year at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. The Board of Directors began the year with strategic assessment, evaluating strengths and areas of growth. Klehm s educational programing included the John and Pauline Cook Botanical Lecture Series, Boy Scout merit badge program plus the Young Explorers in conjunction with the U of I Extension Service and Neighborhood Naturalist youth and adult summer programs. Restoration of 15 acres of native oak woodland was initiated and funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. The grant was used to remove the dense understory of non-native scrubs to allow light to penetrate and foster wildflowers and oak regeneration. Our special events had a banner year. Botanica, a gardener s luncheon, was held at Klehm in April 2016 with a wonderful speaker, program and lunch. Garden Fair Weekend was blessed with big crowds, beautiful weather and double the number of vendors from the previous year ensuring a successful event and Klehm s largest fundraiser. Critical road and urban renewal projects are now complete along South Main Street enhancing access to Klehm and contributing to the beautification of the city s southern gateway and Rockford s historic district. We planted 2,500 daffodils along Main Street so there will be no question that you are in the Arboretum District as announced by the new street light banners Along with the Board of Directors, we extend our sincere appreciation to the individuals, corporations, foundations and the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County who provided generous funding and support for Klehm s ongoing operations. Collectively we have planted a solid foundation for our community s Living Museum. Jane M. 3 Planning for the Future As a result of the strategic assessment exercises completed by the Klehm Board, several ideas emerged as possible projects to enhance the overall experience of members and patrons visiting the arboretum & gardens. The Board of Directors is proud to announce that ground has been broken on the Pavilion & Garden Terrace Project. In citing the need for a facility to provide a first class open air pavilion, the board voted to proceed with plans to build a 10,500 square foot garden plaza which will accommodate a 6,000 square foot pavilion. Garden Fair Weekend The new Pavilion & Garden Terrace will facilitate Klehm s signature events like Garden Fair Weekend, the Arboretum and fundraisers like the Arbor Dash 5K Fun Run and the Hot Diggity Dog Festival. The Pavilion & Garden Terrace is also available as a rental option for corporate, community, and bridal functions. The Pavilion & Garden Terrace is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2017, in time for the inaugural event, GARDEN FAIR WEEKEND 2017, June 3rd & 4th. Event Highlights Botanica Garden Fair Weekend changed to a 2 day event and added antiques, music, and art to the mix. Attendance rose 66%. Botanica attendance grew 60%. Arbor Dash 5K continues to grow with a yearly attendance increase averaging 30% each year. Arbor Dash 5K

7 Klehm Arboretum Foundation, Inc. BUR OAK ENDOWMENT FUND Building on Our Goal Klehm Arboretum Foundation was again chosen by the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois to participate in the Carroll Starr Endowment Challenge VIII. The challenge provides an incentive of matching dollars for funds raised upon meeting our goal. Between October of 2016 and October of 2018, all contributions and donations to the Klehm Foundation will be applied to reaching a campaign goal of $30,000. When Klehm reaches our fundraising goal of $30,000 the Carroll Starr Endowment Challenge VIII will provide a $10,000 match. All funds contributed to the Klehm Foundation are held in the Bur Oak Endowment Fund and represents long term financial support for the Arboretum & Botanic Garden. Only the growth and interest of the fund can be used for distribution supporting the facilities and programs at Klehm.
