Das, liebe Freunde, Förderer und Wegbegleiter der PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung drückt mit wenigen Worten genau das aus, was wir uns als Stiftung seit nunmehr fast 20 Jahren zum erklärten Ziel gemacht haben: Wir wollen benachteiligte Kinder und Jugendliche weltweit auf den Weg bringen! Auf den Weg in eine gesicherte Zukunft. Auf den Weg in ein selbstbestimmtes Leben. Auf den Weg hinaus, aus Umständen, die es ihnen per se nicht leicht machen, ihre Träume zu verwirklichen. Den Schlüssel zu all diesen Wegen sehen wir in der Bildung. Denn Bildung ist die wichtigste Voraussetzung, um der Armut zu entkommen, Selbstbewusstsein und kritischen Geist zu entwickeln und so schließlich das eigene Leben selbst lenken zu können. Mit unseren PATRIZIA KinderHäusern schaffen wir Orte, an denen Kinder und Jugendliche genau das können: Wohlbehütet aufwachsen, in einem sicheren Rahmen lernen und einfach Kind sein. Fünfzehn KinderHäuser haben wir inzwischen weltweit errichtet. Und viele weitere sind aktuell bereits in Planung, teilweise sogar schon im Bau. Denn für uns ist Learning to grow kein Lippenbekenntnis. Es ist ein lebenslanges Versprechen an die Kinder dieser Welt. Auf den folgenden Seiten haben wir für Sie die vielen großen und kleinen Stiftungsmomente 2017 nochmals zusammengefasst. and growing to learn. Dear friends, supporters and companions of the PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung, these words express succinctly and precisely what we have set as our stated goal for almost twenty years now: we want to help disadvantaged children and adolescents worldwide to embark on a journey. On a journey into a safe future. On a journey into a life of self-determination. On a journey and beyond away from situations or conditions that make it difficult for them to realise their dreams. We consider the key that opens the door to this journey to be education. Because education is the most important prerequisite for escaping poverty, building self-confidence and become a critical thinker in order, ultimately, to lead one s own life independently. Our PATRIZIA KinderHaus facilities allow us to provide children and adolescents with a place to do precisely that and grow up in a safe environment, to learn new things in safe conditions and simply get on with their childhood. We have now built 15 KinderHaus establishments worldwide. Many more have already entered the planning stage, while others are currently under construction. For us, learning to grow is not just something we pay lip service to. It s a lifelong promise to the children of this world. 4 6 Unsere Arbeit Our work Glücksgeschichte aus Grabouw Die 14-jährige Beredine kam 2017 zusammen mit ihren Geschwistern Brendon und Ezet ins Child and Youth Care Center (CYCC) in Grabouw, Südafrika. Die Kinder waren stark vernachlässigt, da die Eltern als Saisonarbeiter auf einer Farm arbeiten. Beredine kümmerte sich als ältestes Kind sowohl um den Haushalt als auch um die kleine Ezet. Kein Wunder, dass Schule und Lernen für sie in dieser Zeit zu kurz kamen. Im PATRIZIA KinderHaus hat sich die lebensfrohe Beredine schnell eingelebt. Sie genießt es, hier Kind sein zu dürfen und geht wieder gerne in die Schule, wo sie nun zu den Besten ihrer Klasse zählt und gleich mehrfach schulisch ausgezeichnet wurde. Wie zu Hause ist Beredine auch im CYCC die Älteste der Kinder und ein Vorbild für die Jüngeren. Ihre Eltern arbeiten jetzt engagiert mit den Sozialarbeitern zusammen. Sie möchten ihre Kinder baldmöglichst wieder bei sich haben. Um weiterhin Unterstützung in der Erziehung zu bekommen und um Beredines tolle Schulerfolge nicht zu gefährden, sind die Eltern nach Grabouw gezogen. In diesem Jahr ist geplant, die Kinder wieder ganz in die Obhut der Eltern zurückzugeben. Glee in Grabouw At the age of 14, Beredine and her brother and sister Brendon and Ezet were taken in by the Child and Youth Care Center (CYCC) in Grabouw, South Africa. The children had been severely neglected, as their parents were working as seasonal labourers on a farm. As the eldest child, Beredine not only had to run the household, she even had to look after her little sister, Ezet. It s hardly surprising she had no real time for school or learning things. Beredine is now full of life and she quickly felt at home in the PATRIZIA KinderHaus. She loves being able to enjoy her childhood again and is really happy to be back at school once more. She s one of the best pupils in the class and has already won a number of school prizes. In the same way that Beredine is the eldest child in her family, she s also the eldest at the CYCC, so many younger children look up to her. Her parents are now working intensively with social workers and they would love to be at home again in the company of their children as soon as possible. To ensure they receive support with the upbringing of their children and don t do anything to endanger Beredine s success at school the children s parents have now also moved to Grabouw. The idea is to put everything in place for the children to return home so they can once more be cared for by the family. Ein Brief von Hilda Rührende Worte erreichten die KinderHaus-Stiftung aus Peramiho, Tansania. Obwohl dort die kleine Hilda selbst ihren elften Geburtstag feierte, freute sie sich über einen anderen Geburtstag noch viel mehr: Ihr Bruder Christian wurde im PATRIZIA Children Hospital Peramiho im siebten Monat mit Gramm geboren. Rührend schreibt sie in ihrer Landessprache Kiswahili: kwa niaba ya watoto wenzangu ninapenda kwa namna ya pekee kushukuru shirika la PATRIZIA kinder Hauser kwa kutujeaga hospitali ya watoto peramiho Ins Deutsche übersetzt erzählt sie: Ich möchte der Stiftung Danke sagen für den Bau des Kinderkrankenhauses, wo das Leben meines kleinen Bruders gerettet werden konnte. Christian kommt derzeit noch einmal im Monat zur Kontrolle und die Ärzte freuen sich über seine gute Entwicklung. Hilda selbst wurde auch schon einige Male im Kinderkrankenhaus behandelt. Sie geht in die fünfte Klasse, lernt fleißig und möchte eines Tages selbst gerne Kinderärztin werden. A letter from Hilda The foundation received a moving letter from Peramiho in Tanzania recently. Although it was time for young Hilda to be celebrating her eleventh birthday herself, she was actually more excited about another birthday. Her younger brother, Christian, was born at the PATRIZIA children s hospital in Peramiho two months premature, weighing only 1200 grams. Her touching words in Swahili, her mother tongue, were: kwa niaba ya watoto wenzangu ninapenda kwa namna ya pekee kushukuru shirika la patrizia kinder Hauser kwa kutujeaga hospitali ya watoto peramiho. This roughly translates as: I d like to thank the foundation for building the children s hospital where they were able to save my little brother s life. Christian still goes back once a month for check-ups. The doctors are delighted with his progress and Hilda has also been treated at the children s hospital several times. She is currently in the fifth form at school and is an eager learner. And her dream? One day she d like to become a paediatrician herself. Neuer Schlafsaal, größeres Lehrangebot Pünktlich zum Beginn des neuen Schuljahres im Juli 2017 wurde an der PATRIZIA Girls Secondary School in Peramiho, Tansania, das neue Unterkunftsgebäude mit zwei Schlafsälen fertiggestellt. Die zusätzlichen Schlafräume wurden nötig, da das Unterrichtsspektrum erweitert wurde: Bisher mussten Mädchen, die wissenschaftliche Berufe anstrebten, nach der zehnten Klasse die Schule wechseln, da dort kein Chemie- und Physikunterricht angeboten wurde. Beide Fächer sind nun Bestandteil des offiziellen Lehrplans, sodass auch Schülerinnen mit naturwissenschaftlichem Schwerpunkt bis einschließlich der zwölften Klasse an der PATRIZIA Girls Secondary School bleiben und ihren Abschluss machen können. New dormitory, more teaching options Just in time for the beginning of the new school year in July 2017, a new accommodation wing was completed at the PATRIZIA Girls Secondary School in Peramiho, Tanzania. The building has two dormitories. These were necessary after an expansion in the school curriculum. Until now, any girls interested in pursuing a career in science had to switch schools after completing the tenth form because the school didn t offer chemistry or physics classes. But now both subjects are on the official school timetable, so students focussing on the sciences can stay at the PATRIZIA Girls Secondary School right through to the end of the twelfth form and finish school then. Royaler Besuch aus Fernost in der Fuggerstadt Königlicher Besuch aus Fernost in der Fuggerstadt: Die Prinzessin des Königreichs Bhutan, Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck, besuchte zusammen mit einer königlichen Delegation die PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung in Augsburg. Die mehrköpfige Delegation informierte sich über die weltweiten Hilfsprojekte der gemeinnützigen Stiftung. Dabei wurden auch Möglichkeiten für eine zukünftige Zusammenarbeit ausgelotet. So wurde beispielsweise die Errichtung eines PATRIZIA KinderHauses in dem Königreich im Himalaya erörtert. Wir freuen uns über das Interesse und die Wertschätzung für unsere Arbeit und können uns eine zukünftige Zusammenarbeit sehr gut vorstellen, erläutert Alexander Busl, Geschäftsführer der PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung. A royal visit from Far East A royal visitor from the Far East came to Augsburg recently. The Queen Mother of the Bhutanese kingdom, Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck, joined a royal delegation on a visit to the PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung. During the visit, they heard about the worldwide aid projects of the charitable foundation and explored different collaboration options, including the possibility of setting up a PATRIZIA KinderHaus in the Eastern Himalayan kingdom. We re delighted with the interest and appreciation shown for our work and can easily imagine starting a collaboration in the future, explains Alexander Busl, Managing Director of the PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung. Gemeinsam trugen alle zu einem einzigartigen Festival bei, bei dem ein temporärer Kunstraum im Freien geschaffen wurde, der für jedermann zugänglich ist. Die Erlöse aus dem Verkauf der Kunstdrucke von den entstandenen Wandbildern flossen zu 100 Prozent nach Simbabwe in das neue, als Schule genutzte PATRIZIA KinderHaus in Harare. artists Loomit, DAIM, SatOne, Daniel Man, and the Stone Age Kids. Together, they turned the occasion into a unique event, a festival that allowed an outdoor area to be transformed into a temporary art gallery for everyone to enjoy. Revenues generated by selling prints of the murals went 100% towards the new school run by PATRIZIA KinderHaus in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. Das PAT ART LAB versteht sich als Plattform für Gegenwartskunst namhafter, aber auch bisher unbekannter Künstler. Die Idee ist, in europäischen Großstädten Kunst im öffentlichen Raum zu fördern. Initiator des PAT ART LABs ist die PATRIZIA Immobilien AG, die mit dieser Initiative gleichermaßen die Kultur und benachteiligte Kinder in aller Welt fördern möchte. So fließen alle Erlöse aus dem Verkauf von Kunstdrucken der beteiligten Künstler zu 100 Prozent in die aktuellen Projekte der PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung. Im Sommer 2017 hat das PAT ART LAB einen außergewöhnlichen Kunstraum in München initiiert. Auf dem Streetart-Festival SCALE haben einige der weltweit bekanntesten Graffitikünstler an den Bürogebäuden des ehemaligen Siemens-Geländes fantasievolle Wandmalereien erschaffen. Auf den mehrere 100 Quadratmeter umfassenden Wänden entstanden so Kunstwerke im XXL-Format. Insgesamt 15 Künstler haben an dem Kunstfestival teilgenommen: Neben OsGemeos, den weltberühmten Zwillingsbrüdern aus Brasilien, waren auch Axel Void aus Miami, ARYZ und Okuda aus Spanien, Sainer (ETAM) aus Polen, jana&js aus Frankreich/Österreich und aus Deutschland The PAT ART LAB sees itself as a platform for contemporary art created by leading artists sometimes artists who are relatively unknown. The result was a series of XXL murals covering an area measuring several hundred square metres. A total of 15 street artists took part in the festival, including OsGemeos, the world-famous twin brothers from Brazil, Axel Void from Miami, ARYZ and Okuda from Spain, Sainer (ETAM) from Poland, jana&js from France and Austria, and the German street

7 12 Unsere Projekte Our projects Hoffnung für Hopley Hope for Hopley Die Schule ist so beliebt, dass der Unterricht in zwei Schichten stattfindet. Andreas Menke, Vorstandsmitglied Lister Makoni hat die Rising-Star-Schule mit gegründet und ist heute stellvertretende Schuldirektorin. Lister Makoni co-founded the Rising Star School and is now Deputy Principal. Sazda Die Einwohner Simbabwes lieben ihr Nationalgericht. Dreimal täglich wird der Maisbrei hier gegessen. Jeden Tag. Morgens, mittags, abends. So auch bei meinem Abendessen bei Lister Makoni. Die 45-Jährige hatte mich zu sich nach Hause eingeladen; dorthin, wo alles seinen Anfang nahm. Seit 2005 lebt Lister in einer Lehmhütte in der Siedlung Hopley am Stadtrand von Harare. Seinerzeit wurden Menschen durch die Mugabe-Regierung hierher zwangsumgesiedelt. Mittlerweile leben Menschen in der Siedlung Hopley, die auch heute noch keinen Zugang zu jeglicher Infrastruktur wie Strom oder Wasser hat. Lister zählt mit ihren beiden Töchtern Gloria und Evernice sowie ihren beiden Söhnen Liberty und Chris zu den ersten Bewohnern Hopleys. Damit ihre und die übrigen Kinder von Hopley eine Chance auf eine bessere Zukunft bekommen, gründete sie 2010 mit anderen Eltern gemeinsam die Rising-Star-Schule. Da Schulgebäude fehlten, fand der Unterricht im Freien bei Regen unter Plastikplanen direkt vor Listers Haustür statt. Die später in Eigeninitiative aus Lehm errichteten Schulgebäude waren zwar schon eine Verbesserung, allerdings sind sie zu klein und zu dunkel, um als offizielle Schule von der Regierung anerkannt zu werden. Lister was one of the very first residents of Hopley, along with her two daughters, Gloria and Evernice, and her two sons, Liberty and Chris. To give her children and the children of other residents a chance to enjoy a better future, Lister joined forces with other parents in 2010 and set up a school called Rising Star. There were no buildings at the time, so lessons took place outside. If it rained, they erected tarpaulins. Everything stood outside Lister s front door. Later, they managed to build a clay school house. This was certainly an improvement, but it was too cramped and dark to receive recognition from the government as an official school. Mittlerweile wurden dafür aber die Voraussetzungen geschaffen. Die von der PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung neu initiierten Schulgebäude sind großzügig, luftig, hell und gleichzeitig sehr stabil. Kein Wunder, dass die Schule sehr beliebt ist. Der Unterricht muss daher in zwei Schichten stattfinden, um die Schulgebäude bestmöglich zu nutzen. Organisiert wird dies alles nach wie vor von Lister, die heute als stellvertretende Schulleiterin den Schulbetrieb organisiert. Auch künftig wird es für Lister viel zu organisieren geben. Wenn die kommenden Bauabschnitte fertiggestellt sind, wird die Schülerzahl von derzeit 500 auf bis zu ansteigen. Um den Nachwuchs muss sie sich also keine Sorgen machen, zumal mittlerweile auch schon ihr Enkel Takudzwa die Rising-Star-Schule besucht. They re spacious, well aired, bright and of course solid. Unsurprisingly, the school is highly popular. As a result, lessons take place in two shifts to make good use of the school building. Lister still does all the organising and as the new deputy head of the school, she takes care of everyday operational issues. She will also have plenty of things to organise in the future. Once the next building phase has been completed the number of children at the school will shoot up from 500 at the moment to But at least Lister won t need to worry about future generations of schoolchildren especially now that her grandson Takudzwa attends Rising Star. 9 16 Unsere Projekte Our projects Emma ist eine Kämpferin Emma is not one to give up easily Für frischgebackene Eltern sind die ersten Wochen und Monate nach der Geburt ihres Kindes eine ganz besondere Zeit. Eine Zeit, in der man sich seinem Baby annähert, es Tag für Tag besser kennenlernt. Eine Zeit voller unbeschwerter Glücksmomente. Was aber, wenn alles ganz anders kommt und das Baby viel zu früh das Licht der Welt erblickt? Und statt inniger Momente nur die blanke Angst um das Leben des Kindes herrscht? Das ist Emmas Geschichte. Emma hat es geschafft. Sie ist im Leben angekommen und wenn man die bezaubernde, lebhafte Einjährige so sieht, würde man niemals vermuten, wie steinig ihr Weg und wie hart die ersten Wochen und Monate nach der Geburt für sie und ihre Familie waren. Emma kam gut drei Monate zu früh auf die Welt. Bei ihrer Geburt wog sie gerade mal 660 Gramm eine Handvoll Leben, so zart und zerbrechlich, dass mehr als fünf Monate trotz intensivster Bemühungen seitens der Ärzte und Pfleger niemand wirklich sagen konnte, ob Emma es schaffen würde. Ihre ersten vier Lebensmonate muss das kleine Mädchen parenteral, also zentral über das Blutgefäßsystem, ernährt werden. Eine schwere Zeit, für alle. Insbesondere Emmas Mama leidet sehr darunter, dass sie ihr Wir haben Emma immer vertraut, dass sie das alles schafft. Any new parent will tell you what an unbelievable feeling it is in the first weeks and months after the birth of a child. This is a time to cherish, so close to a new being a time to get to know one another. It s also a time of parental bliss and memorable moments. But what if things don t go as planned and the baby is born much too early? Instead of precious moments, the parents are wracked with anxiety about the survival of their offspring? This is what happened when Emma was born. Emma made it in the end. She was born prematurely but if you look at the delightful, lively one-year-old today, you d never guess what challenging times she has behind her and how harrowing the first weeks and months were for her family. Emma was a full three months premature. At birth, she weighed only 660 grams just 24 ounces. A being, no bigger than a hand, so delicate, so fragile. Even after more than five months of intensive work on behalf of the doctors and carers, it was still not possible to say whether Emma was going to make it or not. For the first four months of her life, the tiny girl was nourished parenterally, so she was fed intravenously through a tube. This was a trying time for everybody. Emma s mother was particularly badly affected by her condition and the fact that she couldn t feed her child herself. Hardly a month went by without another complication and every time there was a glimmer of hope, it was quickly dashed by more trepidation. Each moment of reassurance was tinged by another worry. But Emma is a fighter. And she was not alone. Thankfully she received round-the-clock support from her parents and the medical experts at the Third Order children s hospital in Munich. The doctors at the hospital will tell you they work at the limits of medicine. From the very early days, they have been supported by an aftercare team from the PATRIZIA KinderHaus in Munich. The team looks back on many years experience dealing with premature babies, providing invaluable support. Family bliss: Emma is now as happy as a lark and highly inquisitive as she discovers the world around her. Kind nicht selbst ernähren kann. Immer wieder treten Komplikationen auf, immer wieder wird aus dem Hoffen ein Bangen, aus der Zuversicht Sorge. Aber die kleine Emma kämpft. Und sie ist nicht allein: Rund um die Uhr sind ihre Eltern und das medizinische Personal des Klinikums Dritter Orden in München für sie da. Medizin am Limit, so beschreiben die Ärzte die komplizierten Behandlungen. Von Anfang an mit dabei ist das Nachsorgeteam des PATRIZIA KinderHauses München. Durch ihre jahrelange Erfahrung mit Frühchen sind sie für die junge Familie eine enorm wichtige Stütze, denn neben der medizinischen Therapie für das Frühgeborene sind auch die Beratung und die moralische Unterstützung für die Eltern in einer so schweren Zeit ein ganz wesentlicher Punkt. Emmas Mama dazu: Die Betreuung durch unsere enorm engagierte Nachsorgeschwester Vera, an die wir uns jederzeit mit unseren Sorgen wenden konnten, kann man gar nicht hoch genug loben. Für Emmas Eltern war es besonders beeindruckend, wie hervorragend Nachsorgebetreuung, Klinik und Kinderarzt Hand in Hand arbeiteten und ihnen als Eltern dabei stets die Zuversicht und den Mut zusprachen, den sie so dringend brauchten: Wir haben Emma immer vertraut, dass sie das alles schafft, sagen ihre Mama und ihr Papa. Sie sollten recht behalten. Heute ist Emma ein quietschfideles Mädchen. Auch wenn sie zunächst etwas kleiner und zierlicher als andere Kinder in ihrem Alter war, hat sie dies schnell aufgeholt und ist mittlerweile kein bisschen weniger agil, lebenslustig und neugierig. Emma entwickelt sich prächtig und kann heute ein ganz normales Leben führen. Auch dank der Nachsorge, die im PATRIZIA KinderHaus München nach dem Modell des Bunten Kreises betrieben wird: Und inzwischen sind sie auch tatsächlich da, die Glücksmomente, ganz ohne Angst. time for a tiny baby, but the same applies to the advice and moral support given to the parents as they struggle to cope with the challenges of this unfamiliar situation. As Emma s mother explains, Vera provided nursing support for us and she was incredibly committed; we could ask her about anything that was worrying us and I can t praise her enough. Emma s parents say they were particularly impressed by the way the carers, the hospital and the paediatricians all pulled in the same direction as a team, providing parents with constant reassurance, helping them access the courage they so desperately needed to cling onto. We always felt like Emma was going to make it, say her mother and father. And as it turns out, they were right. Emma is now as happy as a lark. At times you notice she s perhaps a bit more delicate than others of her age, but she s catching up quickly and is certainly no less agile. She s also full of beans and highly inquisitive. In fact, she s developing magnificently and is now leading a totally normal life. This is also thanks to the aftercare support provided by the PATRIZIA KinderHaus in Munich, which works according to a model established by the charity Bunter Kreis. And now the family has many more moments of happiness only now they re without any of the anguish. We always felt like Emma was going to make it.

10 18 Unsere Projekte Our projects Hilfe, die ankommt Help that gets to the right people Im Mai 2017 war die PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung in Syangeni, Kenia, vor Ort, um zunächst die Arbeiten und den Baufortschritt der neuen Syangeni Primary School zu besuchen. Wenige Monate später, im September war dann bereits die feierliche Eröffnung. Ein persönlicher Bericht zweier Projektreisen, von Alexander Busl, Geschäftsführer, und Wolfgang Unger, Relationship Manager der PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung. The PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung travelled to Syangeni, Kenya, in May 2017 to see how the building work was going for the new PATRIZIA Primary School in Syangeni. Only months later, it was already time for the festive opening ceremony in September. A personal account is provided by two of the visitors who went to the school, Alexander Busl, Managing Director, and Wolfgang Unger, Relationship Manager at the PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung. September 2017: September 2017: Mai 2017: Heute war ein ganz besonderer Tag für die Stiftung. Zum ersten Mal hatten wir die Gelegenheit, die Baustelle der Schule persönlich zu besuchen und alle Beteiligten kennenzulernen. Schon auf dem Weg von Nairobi nach Syangeni wurde mir bewusst, welch harte Bedingungen hier herrschen: Die weidenden Tiere entlang der Straße sind gezeichnet von der monatelangen Dürre im Land. Hoffnung verspricht einzig der wenige Regen, der seit einigen Tagen zumindest stellenweise für Linderung sorgt. Hoffnung haben auch die Bewohner Syangenis. Die neue Schule soll eine deutliche Verbesserung der Zukunftschancen für ihre Kinder bieten. Der Zugang zu Bildung ist dazu der erste Schritt. Entsprechend ungeduldig und freudig werden wir bei unserer Ankunft erwartet. Bereits ab der Abzweigung von der Hauptstraße hin zur neuen Schule werden wir von allen Kindern mit fröhlichem Gesang begleitet und willkommen geheißen. Momente wie diese sind es, die einem immer wieder vor Augen halten, wie wichtig unsere Hilfe ist; und für mich persönlich sind sie der Grund, warum ich meine Arbeit liebe. Wie sehr die Bewohner die neue Schule herbeisehnen, wird spätestens klar, als sie voller Stolz die selbst produzierten Ziegel zeigen, aus der das Schulgebäude mit sechs Klassenräumen sowie ein Verwaltungsgebäude und ein Sanitärgebäude gebaut werden sollen. Eines ist mir klar: Von der Dürre lassen sich diese Menschen nicht unterkriegen und ich freue mich schon auf den Tag, an dem die Schule eröffnet und mit Leben gefüllt werden kann. ALEXANDER BUSL May 2017: Today was a very special day for the foundation. For the first time, we had the opportunity to visit the school building site personally and get to know everybody involved. Even as we made our way from Nairobi to Syangeni, I became aware of how harsh conditions are there. Animals grazing along the road showed all the signs of months of drought in the country. The only glimmer of hope was the small amount of rain that had fallen recently, at least providing relief in some places. Hope is something the residents of Syangeni also hang on to. The new school should significantly improve the future prospects of their children. Access to an education is the first step on the journey. So there was a sense of restlessness and joy as we were welcomed on our arrival. As soon as we turned off the main road towards the new school, we were accompanied and greeted by all the children with their cheerful singing. It s moments like these that keep reminding you how important our help is and, on a personal level, these moments are the reason I love my work. The moment you fully understand how much the residents long for the new school really came home to us when they proudly displayed the 34,200 bricks they had made - themselves. These were to make the school building with its six classrooms, an administration block and the sanitary complex. One thing I know about these people is that a drought is not the sort of thing to get the better of them and I m already looking forward to the day the school opens and it can be injected with life. Vertreter des Bildungsministeriums, Offizielle der Region, unsere Partner von der Welthungerhilfe alle waren gekommen, um an den Feierlichkeiten teilzunehmen. Als besonderes Geschenk hatte die Regierung zur Einweihung den neuen Wassertank der Schule füllen lassen. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass es seit fünf Monaten nicht mehr geregnet hat, ein Segen, nicht nur für die Schüler, sondern für die ganze Region. Obwohl Syangeni zu einer der ärmsten Regionen in Kenia zählt, merkt man dies den Bewohnern nicht an. Ihre Lebensfreude, ihr Gesang, Tanz und die leuchtend bunten Kleider lassen alle Sorgen vergessen. Heute wird gefeiert! Daniel Joshua, der stolze neue Schuldirektor ist bei der Übergabe des Zertifikats sehr ergriffen. Man sieht ihm förmlich an, welch großer Stein ihm vom Herzen fällt, dass die Schule nun endlich fertig ist und die Schüler nicht mehr in Behelfsräumen ohne Dach und ausreichenden Schutz vor Sonne und Regen ausharren müssen. Wieder einmal tief beeindruckt von den Eltern, Kindern und Begegnungen reisen wir schließlich ab. Mit der Sicherheit und dem guten Gefühl, hier etwas enorm Wichtiges geschaffen zu haben: die Grundlage für eine besser Zukunft für Hunderte Kinder. WOLFGANG UNGER Kenia. Laut Weltentwicklungsbericht der Vereinten Nationen zählt das ostafrikanische Land zu den 30 ärmsten der Welt. Um den Teufelskreis der Armut zu durchbrechen, hat die kenianische Regierung landesweit eine kostenlose Grundschulausbildung eingeführt. In den letzten zehn Jahren ist dadurch die Zahl der Schüler um 50 Prozent gestiegen. Dieser an sich sehr positive Effekt hat aber gleichzeitig zu erheblichen Problemen geführt: Aufgrund des starken Zustroms neuer Schüler sind die vorhandenen Klassenräume hoffnungslos überfüllt. Es gibt zu wenig Schulen, zu wenig Lehrer und zu wenig Schulbücher. Handshakes. This was how the day started for the official opening of our new Primary School in Syangeni. Everyone came along to take part in the celebrations - the representatives of the ministry of education, local officials, our partners from Welthungerhilfe. The government had arranged for the new storage tank at the school to be filled with water as a special gift to mark the official opening. Given the lack of rain for the last five months, this was a blessing, not just for the schoolchildren but also for the whole area. Although Syangeni is one of the poorest areas in Kenya, you wouldn t think it when you meet the people there. Their joie-de-vivre, the singing, the dancing and the bright glowing clothes do away with all their worries. And today s a time to celebrate! Daniel Joshua, the proud new headmaster, was extremely touched by the handing over of the certificate. You could almost literally see what a huge weight this took off his shoulders - to finally see that the school was finished; the children would no longer need to spend time in temporary accommodation without a roof or proper protection from the sun and rain. Deeply impressed, once again, by the parents, children and many people we had encountered, we finally took our leave. With a good feeling inside and safe in the knowledge that something tremendously important had been established here: a foundation for a better future for hundreds of children. WOLFGANG UNGER Kenya - according to an international development report issued by the United Nations, this country in East Africa is one of the thirty poorest nations on earth. To break the vicious circle of poverty, the Kenyan government has introduced free primary education throughout the country. As a result, the number of children attending school has risen by 50 per cent over the last decade. This is a very positive result, but at the same time it has led to certain problems: the sudden influx of new schoolchildren means existing classrooms are hopelessly overfilled. There aren t enough schools, teachers or school books.

Die Welthungerhilfe wurde bereits 1962 als eine der ersten weltweiten Initiativen zur Hungerbekämpfung gegründet. Heute ist sie eine der größten privaten Hilfsorganisationen in Deutschland, die politisch und konfessionell unabhängig arbeitet sowie auf größtmögliche Unabhängigkeit von externen Vorgaben achtet. A world without hunger isn t a dream; it isn t a vision. Michael Hofmann, board member for Welthungerhilfe in Germany signing the agreement wurden von der Welthungerhilfe 407 Auslandsprojekte in 39 Ländern mit knapp 240 Millionen Euro gefördert und so 8,4 Millionen Menschen unterstützt. Davon entfallen 177 Projekte auf Afrika, wobei sich allein in Kenia 21 Projekte mit einer Fördersumme von 5,17 Millionen Euro in der Umsetzung befanden. Mehr als Kenianer konnten von dieser Hilfe profitieren. Die drei Schwerpunkte der Hilfe für Kenia liegen in der ländlichen Entwicklung und Ressourcenschutz, Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Dürre und der Förderung benachteiligter Kinder und Jugendlicher. The vision of Welthungerhilfe is of a world in which all people can exercise their right to a self-determined life in dignity and justice, free from hunger and poverty. Their stated goal is to end hunger in all of the areas in which they currently work by A world without hunger isn t a dream; it isn t a vision. It s a human right and one we can deliver, says Bärbel Dieckmann, President of Welthungerhilfe. Welthungerhilfe provides its support with the help of approximately 2500 employees, with everything coming from a single source. Its services range from the promotion of agriculture in keeping with local requirements, to access to clean water, the supply of environmentally friendly energy, and general improvements to healthcare and education. The organisation tailors its work to actual demands in order to help people in acute need, for example following a natural disaster. Once the most important fundamental requirements have been addressed, Welthungerhilfe helps rebuild the regional infrastructure and provides support with long-term development. As such, its motivations match the basic principle adhered to by PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung of helping others to help themselves. Help for Kenya In 2016, Welthungerhilfe supported 407 projects outside Germany in 39 countries, providing 240 million of support to 8.4 million people. 177 of those projects were in Africa and 21 projects were carried out in Kenya alone, through funding worth 5.17 million. This made it possible to provide 200,000 Kenyans with important help. The three main priorities in providing help in Kenya are rural development and resource conservation, equipping people to combat drought, and promoting the interests of disadvantaged children and young adults. Die Welthungerhilfe folgt damit auch dem Grundsatz der PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung und schafft Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe. The PATRIZIA KinderHaus opened in Kenya in 2017 following a joint project with Welthungerhilfe. Alexander Busl: Der Sponsor Circle ist eine Plattform, die Förderer und Freunde der Stiftung gleichermaßen ansprechen soll. Many large companies want to become involved in social causes and fulfil their responsibility to society. The PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung has started a new initiative to allow companies to be part of a social cause without having to set up their own systems and structures: the Sponsor Circle. The initiative adheres to high standards and is managed by professionals. Alexander Busl, Managing Director of the PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung explains the background to the new initiative. Mr Busl, could you tell us exactly how the Sponsor Circle works and why it was set up by the PATRIZIA KinderHaus-Stiftung? Alexander Busl:The Sponsor Circle is a platform that is designed to hold similar appeal to the people who sponsor the foundation and people who are simply its friends. By becoming a member of the Sponsor Circle, not only are you given access to exclusive reports and projects run by the foundation, there are special events, some of which are an ideal opportunity to forge networks. What s the overall goal of the Sponsor Circle? Busl: The aim of having a special sponsor group is to make processes more of an established system, also so that funding is more regular. That ll make it easier for us to plan as a foundation and ultimately that s better for implementing more projects. In a nutshell, we can help even more children worldwide. Another aspect is that we want to use the initiative to help companies get involved in social causes, so they can also use this for PR purposes. Our experience with CSR, PR, foreign projects and volunteering goes back nearly two decades, so we re in a great position to help firms build their own image and identity in social areas. We ve got a number of events coming up. The Charity Golf Cup has been up and running for some time now so that s a fixed item on the agenda. So looking at 2018, there ll be the foundation forum in Frankfurt, when our founder and PATRIZIA CEO Wolfgang Egger will meet up with other founders to discuss topics like collaborative development projects, plus new challenges and visions. The musical will be performed by professionals, but they ll be accompanied by children and young adults from the Mozartstadt Augsburg singing and music school. In toller Atmosphäre bei bestem Wetter zu golfen und damit Kindern in der Welt etwas Gutes zu tun, besser geht s nicht. Stefan Reuter, Manager FCA It looks like the weather gods are a big fan of the PATRIZIA Charity Golf Cup. For the fifth time in succession, the playing conditions were ideal in 2017 with glorious sunshine and smiles all round at all three tournament locations: Frankfurt, Hamburg and Olching (outside Munich). Summarising, Stefan Reuter, manager of Augsburg FC (the Bundesliga football team) said, A great atmosphere, ideal golfing weather, and at the same time doing something good for children in the world - it couldn t be better This was a sentiment everyone agreed with - organisers and participants - not just because the weather put beaming smiles on everyone s faces in the anniversary year, but also because of the new record donations of 178,500. In a nutshell, Frank Fleschenberg, President of the Eagles Charity Golf Club, describes the concept behind the PATRIZIA Charity Golf Cup as helping by playing. It s a concept that works every year.
