This is Bris City C's Centenary Pools' project in Gregory Terrace; incorporates a series of swimming, diving & wading pools; seats 1,200 in a public gallery and an elevated 'free form' restaurant with observation terrace above. It is the work of City arch't Mr. James Birrell. 11. A former garbage tip in Wyatt Park, Auburn, NSW, was recently converted into a large 200,000 Swimming Centre (see below) covering 3'q-acres, provides 5 pools, lawns & picnic grounds Administrative Bldg, Dress'g rms, Spectators' pavilion, club rms, kiosk & mngr's flat (Frank R. Hines, arch't; P 0 Miller Milston & Ferris, eng'rs, Kell & Rigby Pty Ltd, bldrs) This is Astor House (Electronic Industries Ltd) in Sturt-st, S Melb, the latest addition to the City's skyline. Located in what was a swampland, this 125-ft high bldg rests on 132 piles driven 54-ft below ground level. A refreshing change from the all too frequent "glass house look', the external walls are an arrangement of tiling & ceramic veneer resulting in a pleasant grey tone. (Peter Spier, arch't; W L Irwin & Ass'tes, eng'rs; Keith G. Hooker, bldr; ) IT Hans are now ready for building a new 'Home for the Aged' in Redfern, Syd. It features Living & Bedrms, Lounge, Hospital annexe & mech Laundry (J. A. & P. Kerr, arch'ts) W A Chapter Council of RAIA protested against the appointment of an Eastern States' arch't (Louis Williams) to design the new Anglican Cathedral at Bunbury. Claimed as the most important bldg to be erected by Anglican Church in WA since the war, the selectors (says secretary E G Sier) added insult to injury by adopting what they called a "modern gothic" style. This office bldg for Victa Consolidated Industries, recently completed at Milperra, NSW, stands modestly alongside the main factory built earlier. (Peter Muller, arch't; Kell & Rigby Pty Ltd, bldrs) An old football field will accommodate this R S L Club at Granville, NSW. A system of interlocking circles & rings on 2 main central arcs, encloses a 60-ft dia internal courtyard the floor of which steps down in concentric circles to a shallow pool containing a fountain. 2 Vic Arch'ts Registration Board reports (RVIA Bulletin Dec '59) interesting statistics comparing the increase of registration in Aust & UK in the past decade. Pop'n ,252 9,951,618 18,987 51,680, ,108 8,045,570 15,824 50,363,000 'Southern Cross' is the name of a 5m hotel to be buil+ on the East'n Market Site, Melb, by Pan Am'cn Airways. The I8-storey bldg will have a wide central plaza planted with gardens & underground parking for 300 cars. IT Work started on a group of II Laboratory bldgs on a 19-acre site at N Ryde, Syd; being erected for the development of Food preservation by C.S.I.R.O. (C.W. Dept, arch'ts; A W Edward Pty Ltd, bldrs; 587,518) Both staff & students seem unanimous in their dislike of this Syd Univ's 90,000 new School of Architecture. The 3 flr bldg, together with separate smaller annexe which houses the Dept of Arch'I Science, is the first under the Univ's expansion prog'me to be built actually outside the present grds. Its architects' efforts were considerably supplemented by a varied assortment of opinions from the staff of the school. (Baldwinson, Booth & Peters, arch'ts; W. Draw'gs, Eric W Andrew; L H Howe & Bamber Pty Ltd, bldrs)/while Melb Univ still looks for an appropriate site for its Arch School bldg its 350 odd under grads continue to jam the existing 13 yr old 'temporary' hutments threatening to burst their seams. If A fairly successful attempt has been made to create a precinctual environment by provision of this courtyard in Syd Univ's new Chem School (right). This is one of the few instances where a pleasant open but protected space has been deliberately achieved in a campus well known for its overcrowded maze of bldgs, old & new. (NSW Govt arch'ts; Stanley & Llewellyn, Struct eng'rs; James Wallace Pty Ltd, bldrs; 1,300,000) Below is the model of Syd Univ's 260,000 Union Theatre now under contr'n (C-S Dec '59). A comp'tn will shortly be held to select a sculpture for the panel facing the rd. (John W Roberts, arch't; A W Edward Pty Ltd, bldrs) IT Maximum amount of bushes & trees are being preserved on site at Delhi Rd, N Ryde, NSW, where Aust Coal Assoc'n (Research) Ltd is bldg its new Labs, offices & plant. Covering 13,100 sq ft area, the Labs have pre-stressed conc. frames supporting a sprayed in-situ conc. sloping roof. (B S Robertson & Hindmarsh, arch'ts; P B Docker & Smith, eng'rs, McConnell bldg Co Ptv Ltd, bldrs: ) IT Mr. J. M. Davidson, 33, has won 1,000 Sisalcraft arch scholarship for '59 (awarded annually to arch'ts under 35 yrs of age). Later this year he leaves for overseas to attend symposiums in US & study at M I T./Mr I W Morison, 28, an Eng'r from Canberra's N C D C won 400-3rd prize for his entry in the competition sponsored by British Road Campaign Council. He provides 8 radial motorways linked at a 3-way junction into the centre of London to solve its traffic congestion. IT Visitors to Sydney will be able to park +heir cars next to their rooms on each floor of 150-ft high privatehotel in Margaret-st. The 200,000 building, plans of which were approved recently, incorporates special lifts installed to handle vertical transportation of vehicles. (Davey, Brindley & Vickery, arch'ts) IT Fairfield (NSW) Municipal C is selling some of its property in order to finance the new Town Hall & Civic Centre. The scheme, work on which is expected to commence shortly, also includes Baby Health Centre, Women's Res+ Centre, Civic Square, Library, Council Chamber & Offices. (Edwards Madigan & Torzillo, Syd arch'ts) These Common rms are the latest extension to Syd Univ's Veterinary Science Bldg. (Moore, Walker & Croaker, arch'ts; James Wallace Pty Ltd, bldrs)

3 Sid Myer Music Bowl in Kings Domain, Melb (C-S June, '59) which rec'd world recognition recently by winning R S Reynolds Memorial award '59 ($25,000 & a medal) has now been selected as the 'Building of the year by the editors of 'Arch. & Arts' (Yuncken, Freeman Bros Griffiths & Simpson, arch'ts). The same magazine selected 'Pelican' above a summer house at Davey's Bay, Vic, as 'House of the Year'. Its arch'ts Messrs. Grounds, Romberg & Boyd have also won the 2nd Pan Pacific Arch citation for "work of exceptional merit in the Pacific area" awarded annually by AIA's Hawaii Chapter. (Last yr's award went to Prof Tange of Japan). In their anxiety to develop a properly zoned city of neighbourhood centres "rather than just a series of dormitory suburbs', the Brisb City C announced its intention to advertise overseas for 2 'special' arch'ts with a salary range of 1670 to 1795 a yr each. Nearing completion on a 9-acre site in Blakehurst, NSW, is a new 233,000 High School which boasts of a unique roof of folded-flat-plate conc. Over 8 miles of steel pipe scaffolding was used to support the form work used in pouring 3Z" thick conc. roof over the 96-ft by 60-ft auditorium. This co-ed school will accommodate 920 plus 38 teachers and is being built as a "package deal" under which the builder organizes the whole project from design to contr'n. (John Allen & Russel C Jack, consulting arch'ts; Civil & Civic, bldrs) Helicopters (carrying passenger; 184 mph) may land on this new 6-storey Ansett Transport Industries' HQ's bldg now under constr'n in Swanston-st, Melbourne. Using lightweight concrete in rib & slab constr'n, the bldg is estimated to cost 750,000. (Seabrook, Hunt & Dale, arch'ts; E A Watts Ply Ltd, bldrs) Melb Univ has introduced a new Master's degree in Town & Regional Planning. If What looks like a case of painless extraction, Syd dentist Dr. Walter Wearn struck a 11m jackpot when 220-acres of his land at N Rocks, Parramatta, was included in 56+ sq miles recently released from Green Belt. His allegations of bribery & corruption in 'high places' brought an immediate police enquiry ordered by NSW Premier Heffron. Loniinuous strip windows with sun hoods on the north are featured in 'Mobil House' the new HQ's for Vac Oil Co now nearing completion in S'gate, Melb. This 15-storey bldg is estimated to cost 1,375,000. (Bates, Smart & McCutcheon, arch'ts; Clements Langford Ply Ltd, bldrs)

4 APPIAN WAY...buitt in 312 BC... still in use 1959 AD Via Appia, first of the great Roman roads which were said to have made the Roman Empire possible, is still a constant delight to travellers. The `golden milestone' which in 312 B.C. marked the course of this great road, still stands in Rome. Walk on the grey volcanic stones (brought from the neighbourhood of Vesuvius regardless of expense and difficulty), and you walk where chariots once drove to war. Anyone who has travelled the 330 miles from Rome to Brindisi will agree that LONGARUM REGINA VIARUM the queen of long distance roads has certainly passed the test of time. We owe much to the ancient world. Their high standard of building design, material and construction is a challenge to our modern techniques.
