2 About the Author ABOUT THE AUTHOR The author was born on July 2 th 986 in Cava de Tirreni, Italy. Her primary and secondary education were completed in her native town. In 2005 she moved to Naples to attend classes at the Federico II university where in 2008 she successfully completed the bachelor program of Health Biotechnologies. Two years later, in 200, the author obtained her master degree in Medical Biotechnologies from the same university. During her undergraduate years she worked on her thesis at the department of medical biochemistry and biotechnologies (DBBM) of the Federico II university in Naples. At the end of her master studies, she moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to start her PhD at the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) in the department of medical biochemistry under the supervision of Dr. Ben Distel. The data presented in this thesis is the result of the main research paths she undertook during her PhD. At present, the author is a post-doctoral fellow working under the supervision of Dr. Ben Distel and Prof. Ype Elgersma in the department of neuroscience of the Erasmus Medical Centre (EMC) of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. 8 The making of this thesis couldn t have been possible without the friends, family and colleagues that surrounded me in all these years.
