Thesis Planar Edgeless Silicon Detectors for the TOTEM Experiment Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Claus Grupen 09/ /2002 BSc. in Engineering Physics at the University of Gaziantep, Turkey PhD Thesis Overview The CMS experiment, located at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) includes a silicon pixel detector to allow tracking in the region closest to the interaction point. At full LHC luminosity the pixel sensors will be exposed to a fluence of n eq /cm 2 /yr. I used a simulation of irradiated pixels sensors to monitor position resolution, charge collection degradation after heavy irradiation. I implemented the so called eta correction to correct the systematic errors in the pixel sensors due to radiation induced damages. After the simulation I performed a testbeam at the end of September 2006 in order to study pixel performances such as position resolution after irradiation. For the first time irradiated and unirradiated CMS pixels with the final dimensions (100x150µm 2 ) and readout chips were tested in the 3T field at the CERN testbeam facility. New measurements of the charge collection efficiency, the position resolution from different hit reconstruction algorithms and comparison with the simulation results are presented. Also signal-to-noise ratios, radiation hardness parameters, particle detection efficiencies extracted from the testbeam data.
