OTT HAD SETTLED IN INDUSTRY FIVE YEARS EARLIER AFTER EMIGRATING FROM WORMS, GERMANY. HE MARRIED FRIEDRICKE HOEHNE ( ) IN 1872, AND IN 1875, BECAME A TRIAL MINISTER IN THE SOUTHERN (GERMAN) CONFERENCE OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, BEGINNING A MINISTRY CAREER THAT SPANNED 40 YEARS. IN 1880, OTT SOLD THE PROPERTY TO FRITZ HOLZE, WHO OPERATED A GENERAL STORE FROM THE BUILDING. IN 1884, EDWARD LINDEMANN ( ) AND FRANZ GETSHCMANN FORMED A PARTNERSHIP AND PURCHASED THE HOLZE STORE. LINDEMANN, WHOSE FAMILY EMIGRATED FROM WITTENBURG, PRUSSIA IN 1854, PURCHASED HIS PARTNER S HALF OF THE BUSINESS IN IN 1894, LINDEMANN MOVED HIS STORE ACROSS THE STREET AND HE AND HIS WIFE, JULIA (FISCHES) ( ), MOVED THEIR FAMILY INTO THIS BUILDING. IN 1899, LINDEMANN MADE SIGNIFICANT RENOVATIONS, ADDING SEVERAL MORE ROOMS AND A PORCH TO THE HOUSE. IN 1910, EDWARD AND JULIA S SECOND SON, MONROE ( ), MARRIED ELLA OTT ( ), A DAUGHTER OF THE ORIGINAL HOMEOWNERS. THE COUPLE RESIDED IN THIS HOUSE FOR 55 YEARS. ELLA S SISTER, BERTHA OTT ( ), MOVED HERE IN 1946; SHE HAD BEEN A PRACTICING PHARMACIST IN OHIO AND WAS HONORED BY THE TEXAS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AFTER HER DEATH. THE HOUSE HAS A CENTER PASSAGE FLOORPLAN. IT FEATURES QUEEN ANNE DETAILING, WHICH INCLUDES DIAMOND-SHAPED SHINGLES IN THE PEDIMENT, GABLED DORMERS, FRETWORK AND SUPPORTING POSTS THAT ARE LATHE TURNED SPINDLE STYLE. 2 RECORDED TEXAS HISTORIC LANDMARK MARKERS: 2010 Official Texas Historical Marker Sponsorship Application Form Valid September 1, 2009 to November 30, 2009 only This form constitutes a public request for the Texas Historical Commission (THC) to consider approval of an Official Texas Historical Marker for the topic noted in this application. The THC will review the request and make its determination based on rules and procedures of the program. Filing of the application for sponsorship is for the purpose of providing basic information to be used in the evaluation process. The final determination of eligibility and therefore approval for a state marker will be made by the THC. This form is to be used for Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (building marker) requests only. Please see separate forms for either Historic Texas Cemeteries or subject markers. NOTE: Recorded Texas Historic Landmark markers must be placed at the structure being marked. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark markers definition: Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) markers are awarded to structures deemed worthy of preservation for their historical associations and architectural significance. RTHL is a legal designation and comes with a measure of protection; it is the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure, and the designation is required for this type of marker. The RTHL designation becomes effective upon approval by the THC. Official Texas Historical Markers signify the RTHL designation, which comes only through application to and approval by the THC and must include public display of an Official Texas Historical Marker. Owners of RTHL-designated structures must give the THC 60 days written notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. RTHL status is a permanent designation and is not to be removed from the property in the event of a transfer of ownership. Only the THC can remove the designation or recall the marker. The marker must remain with the structure and may not be removed or displayed elsewhere until or unless the

3 THC gives express approval in writing for such action. Once designated as RTHL, properties are subject to provisions of Texas Government Code, Section (f).

4 Criteria: 1. Age: Structures eligible for the RTHL designation and marker must be at least 50 years old. 2. Historical significance: Architectural significance alone is not enough to qualify a structure for the RTHL designation. It must have an equally significant historical association, and that association can come from an event that occurred at the site; through individuals who owned or lived on the property; or, in the case of bridges, industrial plants, schoolhouses and other non-residential properties, through documented significance to the larger community. 3. Architectural significance: Structures deemed architecturally significant are outstanding examples of architectural history through design, materials, structural type or construction methods. In all cases, eligible architectural properties must display integrity; that is, the structure should be in a good state of repair, maintain its appearance from its period of significance and be considered an exemplary model of preservation. Architectural significance is often best determined by the relevance of the property to broader contexts, including geography. Any changes over the years should be compatible with original design and reflect compliance with accepted preservation practices, e.g., the Secretary of the Interior s Standards for Rehabilitation. 4. Good state of repair: Structures not considered by the THC to be in a good state of repair are ineligible for RTHL designation. The THC reserves the sole right to make that determination relative to eligibility for RTHL markers. Special National Register considerations for RTHL marker applications: If a structure has been individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under either Criterion A or B and Criterion C (Architecture), the historical text compiled as part of the National Register nomination process may be submitted as part of the marker process, provided it includes the required reference notes and other documentation. Acceptance of the National Register information for the purposes of the marker process will be up to the sole determination of the THC. Listing in the NRHP does not guarantee approval for an RTHL marker. See the THC web site at for National Register criteria. Check this box if the property is individually listed in the NRHP. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Any individual, group or county historical commission (CHC) may apply to the THC to request an Official Texas Historical Marker for what it deems a worthy topic. Only complete marker applications that contain all the required elements and are submitted online as required can be accepted or processed by the THC (for RTHL markers, the required elements are: sponsorship application form; narrative history; documentation; legal description of the property; site plan; floorplan; historic photograph; and current photographs clearly showing each side of the structure please resize photographs to 1-2 MB, or approximately 1024 x 768 pixels). Completed applications must be duly reviewed, verified and approved by the county historical commission (CHC) in the county in which the marker will be placed. The sponsorship application form, narrative history and documentation must be submitted as Microsoft Word or Word-compatible documents and sent via attachments to the THC by no later than November 30, Required font style and type size are a Times variant and 12-point. Narrative histories must be typed in a double-spaced (or 1.5-spaced) format and include separate sections on context, overview, significance and documentation. The narrative history must include documentation in the form of reference notes, which can be either footnotes or endnotes. Documentation associated with applications should be broad-based and demonstrate a survey of all available resources, both primary and secondary.

5 Upon notification of the successful preliminary review of required elements by the THC, a non-refundable application fee of $100 is required. The fee shall be submitted to the THC within ten working days of application receipt notification. APPROVAL BY COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION The duly appointed marker representative (chair or marker chair) noted below for the county historical commission will be the sole contact with the THC for this marker application. To ensure accuracy, consistency and efficiency, all information from and to the THC relative to the application and throughout the review and production processes will be via direct communication with the CHC representative. All other inquiries (calls, s, letters) to the THC will be referred to the CHC representative for response. 8 LINDEMANN OTT HOUSE I. CONTEXT Industry, the oldest German town in Texas (1) was founded in 1831 by Friedrich Ernst.(2) Located in Stephen F. Austin s Colony, Industry, Texas is 28 miles west of San Felipe in the Mill Creek valley of northwest Austin County. Friedrich Ernst enticed fellow Germans to come to Texas and several hundred had settled in the area around Industry by 1842.(3) Ernst was a key factor in the development of German settlement in Texas.(4) Industry experienced growth as the German emigration company known as the Adelsverein(5) formed in Leaders including Prince Karl Solms-Braunfels stayed at Industry with Ernst while planning the mass migration of over 7,000 Germans to Texas,(6) before the Adelsverein s bankruptcy in1847.(7) Many associated with this endeavor peeled off and settled in this region of Texas. Likewise German revolutions sent more Germans to populate Industry and other parts of Texas in the 1850 s(8), and an influx of Germans came here on their own initiative after the Civil War(9). Businesses and homes including the Lindemann-Ott house were built to meet the domestic needs of Industry at this time. II. OVERVIEW The Lindemann-Ott House (at 2207 Main St.) dates to Nov. 12, 1870, when Jacob Ott ( ) bought one acre of land in Industry.(10) Ott was from Worms, Germany and settled in Industry in The idea of adventure, economic security and nearing German military conscription age motivated Ott to emigrate to Industry, Texas at this time. 1

9 After Ott purchased land, he began construction on his house/business with the help of his carpenter neighbor, August Gruensendorf. The building was a typical European style single room for business on the ground level and a residence above the business, connected by an exterior stair case. The stair cases visual remains are still discernible on what is now an interior kitchen wall. Oral tradition indicates the upper room was destroyed during a storm in the 1890 s.(11) The house construction confirms that Ott engaged in his vocation as a baker here, since the 15 x17 ground story room contains two chimney flues, more heat source than needed for a home, but necessary for a bakery operation. Jacob Ott married Friedricke Hoehne ( ) in1872. At this time Jacob Ott was involved with activities of the Industry Methodist Church, and in Nov.1873, he was granted permission to preach his first sermon. Ott s profession of baker was waning and his call to the ministry was answered in 1875 when the Southern (German) Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church admitted Jacob Ott into its ranks as a trial minister.(12) Appointed to Victoria, the young Ott family left Industry at this time. Coincidentally contact and involvement with the community of Industry would endure throughout the remainder of Rev. Ott s life. He would return to serve as Industry s preacher from ,(13) and two of his daughters, Bertha ( ) and Ella ( ), would later be tied through unique happenstances to the house their father built. During Rev. Ott s 40 year ministry, he served Victoria, Houston, Dallas, Fredericksburg and numerous locations in between. Ott was described as a missionary/preacher seeking settlements without churches to organize missions and was responsible for constructing sanctuaries in five locations he served. (14) Dec. 21, 1880, Jacob Ott sold his Industry house to Fritz Holze (15) who operated a General Store in the structure. 2

10 On July 18, 1884, Edward Lindemann ( ) and Franz Getschmann formed a partnership and purchased the Holze store.(16) Edward Lindemann s family had emigrated from Wittenburg, Prussia in 1854 and farmed several miles west of Industry. Asthma forced Edward Lindemann to quit farming and established Lindemann Store in Industry for a livelihood. Edward Lindemann had married Julia Fisches ( ) in 1883, they lived on the western edge of Industry, with their two sons Edward Jr. Eddie ( ) and Monroe ( ). When business flourished Edward was able to purchase his partner Franz Getschmann s ½ of the business on May 31, After the Railroad arrived at neighboring New Ulm in 1892, the area prospered even more and served as the impetus for Lindemann Store s expansion. On Dec. 24, 1894 a lot across the street from the 1870 house was purchased, and an expanded Lindemann Store facility was built there. Simultaneously Edward moved his family into the original 1870 building which then served solely as living quarters. Decorative stenciling was added to embellish the residence and the addition of an expanded rear room kitchen was attached to better serve a larger family. Due to the railroad Lindemann Store s freighting business expanded allowing a greater flow of supplies into and agricultural products out of the area. Prosperity allowed Lindemann to execute a major house renovation in 1899, applying a significant addition to the house. The railroad meant more availability to a greater variety of reasonably priced building supplies, and no restriction to just local products. New Ulm Architect, A.A. Baring had a variety of materials available at his lumberyard and furnished many of the building items for the house expansion.(17) Construction costs including F. Golddapp s carpenter fees totaled $ (18) 3

11 Architecturally the addition followed trends commonly used in rural southern buildings such as a side gabled roof, a survivor of earlier colonial or Greek Revival periods.(19) The new expansion was a modest 1½ story design of two rooms wide and one room deep. The new addition was applied perpendicularly to the old north wall elevation, and made the original house appear as a back wing. This back wing gained a screen porch add on to the east elevation extending the length of the original structure serving as another connection between the old and new parts of the house. The 1½ story addition shows simple sophistication. The two front gabled, single window dormers are symmetrically balanced on either side of a more imposing central gable dormer, with a double window room extension on the upper front roof elevation. The three front facing dormer s gables all have simple ornamented scallop verge boards (20) and the pediments are adorned with applied diamond patterned shingles, reminiscent of the Queen Anne style of the late Victorian period (21). The porch was typically the place a modest structure could be embellished for a more fashionable, pretentious appearance and with added detailing and trendy elaboration for an affluent allusion.(22) Principally the size, patterning, construction and adornment of the home s porch was where one could express uniqueness and individuality. Often craftsmen would copy an eclectic freestyle mixture of overlapping period elements and create an opulent affect for a simple structure.(23) The slightly sloping concave or bell-cast profile of the porch roof room extension lends a hint of French influenced Mansard roof to the house façade.(24) The flaired Mansard roof over the lower porch lends a decorative affect that was a typically inexpensive way to add dramatic enrichment. Deep covered porches with opened sides for breezes added valuable coolness in southern construction, as well as shade from summer sun. This porch also gave a sheltered 4

12 entryway into the home and was commonly used for repose and casual visitation. The porch s double front entry doors contain frosted rare German glass panels and a transom light to allow improved interior lighting. The porch s handrail support has a distinctive pattern inset said to have an oriental influence reminiscent of the Victorian era. This unique decorative detail is similarly seen in some Queen Anne styles with possibly a craftsman s copied version of Chinese Chippendale influence.(25) The porch s supporting posts are lathe turned spindle style, typical of Queen Anne or Folk Victorian period.(26) The house s porch also has decorative under eave support brackets known as S or scroll design.(27) The final decoration of the porch is the modest flat jigsaw cut appended trim or suspended frieze (28) considered gingerbread ornamentation, though this trim lacks delicate turnings it does add a decorative touch to the overall appearance. The house continued as the residence of the Edward Lindemann family. Edward s two sons joined their father in the family business, Eddie in 1904 and Monroe in In 1910 Monroe married Ella Ott ( ) and the young couple made their home here with his parents. Monroe and Ella lived the remainder of their 55 years of marriage in this home. Ella was the youngest daughter of Rev. Jacob and Friedericke Hoehne Ott, and it was Ella s father Jacob who built the original home in The Monroe Lindemann family grew to include 4 children Milton ( ), Elbert, Walter and Grace. In 1911, Edward Lindemann was a co-founder of Industry s First Guaranty State Bank, and served as founding Vice-president of the Board of Directors. Today this institution exists as Industry Bancshares, a holding company with eleven rural community banks in Central Texas. 5

13 In 1916 it was said, Edward Lindemann stands high among businessmen of Austin County, where his associates have the utmost confidence in his foresight, judgment and absolute integrity. (29) When Edward Lindemann died in 1931, he was called Industry s leading merchant and a prominent and highly-esteemed resident.(30) Edward was referred to as the Senior member of the oldest business firm in Industry (Lindemann Store) and was said to be a Santa Claus out of season for providing the needy and poor with necessities for life. (31) Following Edward Lindemann s death his son Monroe retained the house. In the mid 1940 s the house was remodeled, the screen porch was enclosed to create a sunroom/porch and an indoor bathroom was added. In 1946 Bertha Ott, Ella Ott Lindemann s sister, came to live with the Lindemanns. Bertha and Ella were the daughters of Rev. Jacob Ott, builder of the original house. This was indeed an unusually unique occurrence that two of Ott s daughters were now residents of this house he built in Bertha Ott was a superior student who graduated from Blinn College in 1892 and began a teaching career. In 1902 Bertha decided to make a career change and entered Cincinnati, Ohio s Bethesda Hospital & Deaconess Institute a Methodist organization. In 1905 she graduated from the Cincinnati College of Pharmacy with a Bachelor s Degree from Ohio University. Bertha Ott was said to be the first woman pharmacist in Ohio.(32) She was a pharmacist at Bethesda Hospital for 38 years and retired in She came to Industry to live with her sister Ella s family in 1946 and spent the final 15 years of her life as a resident in the house her father built. Bertha Ott passed away July 2, 1961 and on July 18, 1961, the Texas House of Representative s 57 th Legislature honored Bertha Ott with a Memorial Resolution: as a beloved citizen of Texas, a professional pharmacist and a dedicated citizen of Industry, Texas and with 6

14 respect to a good life in service to others a page in the House Journal is set aside to respect her memory. (33) Upon the death of Ella Ott Lindemann (1965) and Monroe Lindemann (1966), the couple s oldest son Milton, the only Lindemann child who still lived in Industry, purchased his sibling s interest and became the home s new owner. In the 1970 s the elderly John V. Marek couple sought to retire from farming and made a trade/sell arrangement to obtain the Lindemann home as a retirement residence. After Mr. Marek passed away, Milton Lindemann s son James requested an option to purchase the Lindemann home when that family no longer needed it. The Marek s honored this request and in the 1990 s James & Ann Lindemann became the owners of the Lindemann-Ott House. James is the Great-grand son of both the Rev. Jacob Ott and Edward Lindemann. The house is now the property of a fourth generation of the original owners, and is part of Lindemann Vintage Properties being featured as a Period House/Family History Museum, along with the adjoining Lindemann Store Museum. III. SIGNIFICNCE The Lindemann-Ott house is a notable survivor of domestic history of early life in Industry, Texas. Many frugal Germans who settled here often tore down their homes to recycle the materials for bigger, better dwellings as they prospered and upgraded. Likewise many superior workmanship examples of Industry s early dwellings can be found in communities as Chappell Hill, Round Top, Brenham, Schulenburg and even the Smithsonian. The Lindemann- Ott House remains among only a few illustrious example of a near pristine middleclass early Industry dwelling. The vintage house represents a fine example of early community and family life as lived in Industry, Texas over a span of some 140 years of history in Industry. 7
