1 National Preservation Month This presentation is part of Lakewood s celebration of Preservation Month and the theme Discover America s Hidden Gems. This year s theme is an opportunity to celebrate places right in our own backyards.

3 National Preservation Month Lakewood Activities May 21 The City of Lakewood Heritage Advisory Board recognizes seven recipients for the 11th Annual Lakewood Historic Preservation Awards. May 30 Lakewood Historical Society presentation at Lakewood Public Library.

6 Commercial Revitalization

7 14900 Detroit Avenue The exterior work focused on complete storefront renovation. Built Architects: Braverman & Havermaet. The firm also designed the Hilliard Square Theater. Sigmund Braverman became a prominent architect of synagogues in the U.S. and Canada. (Building Permit, LHAB)

9 14900 Detroit Avenue The work included removing the pent roof and wood panels covering the transom and piers, replacing the storefront windows, installing overhead doors, redesigning the bulkheads, and new signage.

12 1436 Wyandotte Avenue Built The builder was Albert S. Johnson, a post office employee who lived on Robinwood Ave. He sold the completed house to Lillian M. Miller for $2,600. (Cuyahoga County Fiscal Office and Cleveland City Directories) Exterior rehabilitation work included slate roof repair, porch repair, insulation, exterior painting, and construction of a new garage.

16 15616 Lake Avenue House built (Building Permit) The project is actually two buildings that replaced two buildings. The new structures have siding, shingles, and wide trim, all of which complement the house.

19 1456 West Clifton Boulevard This new garage carefully matches the design details of the house. Built The house was built for Lloyd and Mary Kennedy, a cashier (company officer), who moved from Roycroft Avenue. (Building Permit and City Directories)

21 Historic Rehabilitation

22 17415 Edgewater Drive Built This $16,000 house was built for John J. and Helen M. Dowling. He was the former president of Main Savings & Loan Co., and she was an artist. (Building Permit and Cleveland City Directories) The elaborate wood shingle roof on the house and garage replicates the design and wood species of the original 1920 s roof. Western Red Oak was ordered from a mill in British Columbia.

26 17849 Lake Road Built This $25,000 house was built for Merritt and Marie Bond. He was the president of Lincoln Savings & Loan, as well as secretary-treasurer of Star Baking Co., both located near Clark Ave. and West 25 th St. Before building this house, the couple lived in the same Near West Side neighborhood as his businesses. 27 17849 Lake Road The same owners received a Preservation Award in 2002 for their addition, which was destroyed by a storm several years ago.

29 Preservation Honor Award

30 18131 West Clifton Road Built Well-known Cleveland architects Searles & Hirsh designed this house for Charles H. and Julia W. Church. He was the secretary of The Cleveland Brass & Iron Bedstead Co., located on Merwin Ave. on the West Bank of the Flats. From , the house was owned by Walter and Fannie Baker. An auto industry pioneer, Baker adapted ball bearings to the industry and manufactured electric cars from the late 1890 s to the mid-1910 s. 32 18131 West Clifton Road Changes have occurred to the property over time. The current owners created spaces to serve several functions, such as the area with the chimney, pergola, and second story.

33 18131 West Clifton Road Continuing to the rear, the work included a new addition, interior renovations, and a terrace. The massing, materials, and design details were carefully chosen to blend with this century home.
