Architectural style: American Colonial Revival 7b. Briefly describe the present physical description of the site or structure and describe any major alterations from its original condition: Situated back from the curve of Crescent Drive on a natural knoll, this two story residence is the oldest example of the southern plantation variant of the American Colonial Revival in Beverly Hills. Its side gable roof is supported by eight two story Tuscan columns, creating a veranda across the facade. Three gabled dormers are equally spaced above the facade, and chimneys emerge from each end of the ridgeline. Five bays are defined by the fenestration. In the center, the entry is realized in the Federal style, with sidelights and a fan light. The original screen door remains in the opening. In each of the remaining bays on the lower story, full size case ments are flanked by shutters, topped by transoms and crowned by pediment like lin tels. Eight over one sash with shutters and window boxes appear in the side bays in the upper story. The central window is tripartite and adorned with a balcony. A flat roofed wing, recessed on the north elevation, is similarly detailed with a bracketed boxed cornice and double hung sash over casement openings. One of the most interesting.residences built during the initial period of the City s development is this imposing Colonial Revival mansion on North Crescent Drive. Ori ginally built in 1912 for an Elizabeth E. Thomas, the residence is most closely associated with the family of Caroline and Silsby Spalding, who occupied it for a number of years until their move to Grayhall in 1920 (see separate form). Spalding, the City s first mayor, had married the daughter of oilman and Rodeo Land and Water Company partner Charles Canfield. Records indicate that the Spaldings may have traded residences with Harry D. Lombard, former owner of Grayhall, for Lombard is listed as the owner of 1006 in a Beverly Hills Citizen article about the property in At that time, the Citizen observed: Beautifully landscaped, the site over loolcs the city, occupying a natural knoll on the thoroughfare which adapted itself readily to residence (sic) building purposes. Although it has been built for several years, it is just now receiving its first neighbors and two large estates are being laid out nearby, one directly across the street and one to the south on Crescent (see continuation sheet) Locational sketch map (draw and label site and surrounding streets, roads, and prominent landmarks): 20.
