Cross-referencing the Ponsharden burial registers with names on surviving monuments has shown that there are approximately 380 unmarked graves at the cemetery. Many of these contain the remains of the poorer members of Falmouth and Penryn s congregations. Stone memorials would have been beyond their means, and the simple wooden crosses that once marked their graves have long since vanished. But there were certainly many more headstones at Ponsharden than can be seen today. During the years of neglect a few monuments naturally toppled over, many were smashed by vandals and some were the target of theft (we have reliably been informed that several granite headstones were stolen and used as private mooring blocks in the Penryn River). But the good news is that each year we discover previously buried headstones on site, often after heavy rain erodes a patch of soil and reveals a small area of pristine slate.
