1 The Berry family As previously recorded the grandfather of the WW1 Berry soldiers John Berry (7 th February ) was the son of William and Nanny Berry. William Berry had been baptised at St Matthew s Church, Lightcliffe on 5 th April 1812 by his parents Joseph and Hannah Berry. Both Joseph and Hannah Berry were buried at St Matthew s Churchyard, Lightcliffe as this inscription explains. In memory of JONAS SUTCLIFFE of Lightcliffe who departed this life September 24 th 1804 aged 31 years. Also of HANNAH the wife of JOSEPH BERRY and relict of the above who departed this life October 10 th 1814 aged 42 years. Also of the above said JOSEPH BERRY who departed this life May 8 th 1833 aged 55 years. Also of ANN relict of the above named JOSEPH BERRY who departed this life May 24 th 1844 aged 59 years. William Berry married Nanny Jowett on 6 th November 1834 at the parish church Halifax. Their son, John Berry, was baptised on 19 th April 1840 at St Matthew s Church, Lightcliffe. His parents had previously baptised daughters Hannah and Eliza at the same church on 26 th June 1836 and 3 rd June For each baptism father William s occupation was a Land Surveyor but the address changed from Hipperholme to Lightcliffe and then Bramley Lane. These three children were with their parents, william (29) and Nanny (25), in Bramley Lane for the 1841 census. On 5th November 1843 a second son Herbert was baptised again at St Matthew s Church followed by William on 10 th January 1846, Hannah Maria on 19 th September 1847 and Lewis on 10 th March But there were also two deaths in the 1840s. Six year old Eliza died on 23 rd October 1844 and a year later on 15 th October 1845 nine year old Hannah died. They were both buried in plot LL6 of St Matthew s Churchyard on 26 th October 1844 and 18 th October 1845 respectively. Father William was still a Land Surveyor up until 1847 but had become an Innkeeper when Lewis was baptised in In the 1851census 39 year old William Berry senior was an Innkeeper in Hipperholme. His wife Nancy, sons Herbert (9) and William (5) and daughter Hannah Maria (3) were with him that night along with a 17 year old niece probably his wife s niece - Sarah Jowett acting as a Servant. John Berry may have been the 11 year old pupil at Barkisland Grammar School. Baby Lewis was with his maternal grandmother Mary Jowett, a 62 year old widow who was farming a few acres in Rastrick. 34
2 Three more daughters Louisa, Mary Ann and Lavinia were baptised at St Matthew s Church on 17 th October 1852, 11 th March 1855 and 6 th September But again William and Nanny Berry lost a young daughter when Mary Ann died on 28 th July She was buried on 1 st August 1860 with her sisters in plot LL6. The Blackburn transcription of the memorial reads:- In memory of ELIZA the daughter of William and Nanny Berry of Lightcliffe who died October 23 rd 1844 in the 7 th year of her age. Also of HANNAH daughter of the above who departed this life October 15 th 1845 aged 9 years and 5 months. Also of MARY ANN who died the 28 th day of July 1860 in the 6 th year of her age. All surviving members of the family apart from Louisa were residing at the Sune Inn publights [sic] House next door to Cliffe Hill Lodge in Father William was a Land Surveyor & Inn Keeper. Twenty one year old John was a Land Surveyor, 17 year old Herbert a Joiner, 15 year old William a Stable Boy and 13 year old Hannah Maria a House servant. Lewis (11) and Lavinia (3) were recorded as Scholars. This time 8 year old Scholar Louisa was with her maternal grandmother Mary Jowett at Woodhouse, Rastrick. Much was to happen to members of this Berry family in the decade before the 1871 census On 15 th August 1862 at the parish church Bradford, two nineteen year olds Herbert Berry and Maria Armytage were married. Herbert was a Joiner from Lightcliffe, son of Land Surveryor William Berry. Maria s father George Armytage was a Sorter and the Armytages were from Bradford. Their son George was born in Bradford but baptised in St Matthew s Church, Lightcliffe on 29 th March Similarly Herbert and Maria Berry baptised Laura Armytage Berry on 18 th January 1866, Harry Berry on 25 th December 1867, Annie Armytage Berry on 12 th June 1869 and John William Berry on 22 nd November But just a few days later on 26 th November the 4 week old baby John William Berry was buried 26 alongside his grandfather William Berry in plot V11. On 18 th May year old Land Surveyor John Berry married Martha Lee, the daughter of Currier James Lee, at the parish church in Halifax. John, a Land old Church, Lightcliffe; Janet on 3 rd October 1864 and Raymond on 30 th June Quite possibly between this grandson s birth and baptism 55 year old William Berry died on 8 th May 1867 and was buried on 11 th May 1867 in plot V11 of St Matthew s Churchyard. His probate was granted on 31 st May
3 Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of William Berry late of Lightcliffe in the Township of Hipperholme cum Brighouse in the Parish of Halifax in the County of Yorkshire Innkeeper deceased who died 6 May 1867 at Lightcliffe aforesaid were granted at Wakefield to Nanny Berry of Lightcliffe aforesaid Widow the Relict of the said Deceased she having first sworn. Effects under 300 And then on 7 th March 1869 John Berry died aged just twenty nine. He was buried on 11 th March1869 in the grave shown above. His probate was granted on 15 th April 1869 to his brother Herbert Berry, a Joiner, and his sister Anna Maria s husband John Lee, a Currier, as has already been recorded. Just a few weeks later on 29 th April 1869 John s sister, Hannah Maria Berry, married his wife Martha s brother, John Lee, again in Halifax. And although it was recorded that William Berry, a Land Surveyor was the father of the bride he had, of course, passed away by then. Twenty five year old William Berry junior married 27 year old Charlotte Farrar on 28 th July 1870 at the parish church of Halifax; both were from Hipperholme. Her father Joseph Farrar was a Farmer. His father William Berry, a Land Surveyor was again not recorded as being deceased although he was. Young William was a Currier was this because of the connections with the Lee family? By the time of the 1871 census there were two widows in the family as well as some young Berry families. The other occupant of this plot was Herbert and Maria Berry s tiny baby John William Berry. The headstone on the William Berry grave plot V11 38
6 Herbert and Maria Berry would see their son Harry marry 24 year old Ada Greenwood on 19 th May 1889 at the parish church Halifax. Harry was a 21 year old Stover from Stump Cross, Northowram and his father was recorded as a Joiner. Ada s father James Greenwood was a Corn Miller from White Hall, Hipperholme. Harry and Ada Berry then had a daughter on 6 th August 1889; this was another Janet Berry. Again her paternal grandparents would see her baptised at St Matthew s Church, Lightcliffe on 27 th October But then both these Berry grandparents died within a few months of each other. They were both interred in St Matthew s Churchyard in plot B59. Maria passed away on 1 st December 1889 and was buried on the 4 th December 1889; she was 46 years old. Her 47 year old husband Herbert died on 9 th March 1890 and was interred on the 12 th March 1890 with his wife and their 20 month old son Willie. When Willie was buried on 19 th November 1879 he was the first occupant of plot B59. The deaths left these family members at their respective addresses on 5 th April
