Residents who have been queuing to renew their licences at licensing departments across the capital city can breathe a sigh of relief as the forms are now available, Tshwane metro police spokesperson superintendent Isaac Mahamba told. According to Mahamba, the forms have been available since last week Wednesday. Mahamba confirmed that the department had a challenge with printers and the matter has been sorted out. For the past few weeks residents have raised their concerns about the forms not being available and that the officials at some departments referred residents to buy forms at a cost of R20 from people who are offering photocopying and ID photo services. We have now put measures in place to make renewal forms available. The metro printed forms last Tuesday and they were made available to various departments, said Mahamba. Yolandi van Staden told that when she entered the Centurion licensing department premises recently, there was a notice stating that No forms for renewal of driver s licences. She said according to some residents, this has been going on for almost two weeks and officials claim they do not know when the forms will be available. We were all surprised when we were told to go and buy renewal forms at the caravan where they do photocopies and take ID photos. We are not sure if these people print them from the internet or just make copies from original forms, said Van Staden. Another fuming resident said her husband was also told to go to the caravan to buy forms and because he was desperate to renew his licence, he had to settle for the same option and avoid to face the charges of driving without a licence. Ward councillor Peter Sutton said: The fact that the forms are available is good but it still remains a concern if the system that led to the shortage of forms have been corrected. It also still remains a concern that people sold these forms, government property, to the public. This is a serious offense that in my book is long from sorted out. The DA wants a response from the metro on the action taken to correct this and to avoid this from happening in future. Ranging from law students to primary school teachers, 21 hotties in the competition out of a total of 118 are from Pretoria. The next elimination round, the top 25, will be chosen at the end of June. From there, they are shortlisted to the top 12, who will be on stage on the final night in December, said Mr South Africa CEO, Rudi Baker. The 2013 title was awarded to John Owens, who is also from the Jacaranda City. Baker added that the winner would be judged on his involvement in the competition. It is important to understand that the winner of the Mr South Africa competition is not determined at the grand finale on 12 December. The winner of the competition is judged on his involvement with the competition from the word go. The competition is a process and not just a gala evening. It runs over about ten months, during which the contestants undertake various tasks and challenges in order to assess their abilities, character and drive, he said. Sunnyside resident Jafta Mathunyane said he believed in hard work and setting goals for himself. I set goals that I know are rare for a young man to achieve. 8 8 PRETORIA NORTH REKORD FRIDAY MAY 30, 2014 OPINIE Africa Day was celebrated on 25 May. Many readers may wonder what interest there can be for the average Pretorian in this continental celebration. The reason is that we are part of this continent and many issues that we are faced with on a local level also reflect many of the problems that the continent is faced with. We are truly a microcosm of the greater Africa. Over the past two years, things have started to look up for this continent in terms of its economic potential, but warning signs on the South African labour 4 front indicate that this promised economic boom in Africa might be short-lived. magazine recently wrote that our region s economy is growing faster than that of any other region in the world. The International Monetary Fund recently predicted that this economic boom would continue for many years. However, his boom might be diffused early on if the said warning signs are not heeded. South Africa s continued labour problems with feuding unions dragging the rand down and causing investors to lose confidence must be tackled at the highest level. Other problems for economic growth are poor infrastructure, poor intercontinental transport facilities and of course the perennial conflicts that have always plagued Africa. Many African countries are caught up in recurrent political conflicts that often culminate in devastating wars. These flaring conflicts and wars create harrowing economic hardships, dire refugee problems and sustain a sense of despair in such countries. This is the story across much of Africa, where nearly half of the continent's 53 countries are suffering from active conflict or a recently ended one. There were more highly violent conflicts in Africa in 2012 than at any time since 1945, said the Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict. Wars ruin a country s economy, including the health sector. Devastated by war, a post-conflict government has insufficient revenue to spend on the health sector, which faces enormous demands. At the same time, donors are often reluctant to fund improvements in the health sector before they can be certain that peace can be sustained. Our nation today is adrift and in danger, former president Thabo Mbeki recently warned in a lecture on Oliver Tambo at the ANC centenary celebrations at the University of Fort Hare. He said he was filled with a feeling of unease about our current situation. My feeling of unease is informed by what I sense is a pervasive understanding throughout the nation that there is no certainty about our future with regard to any of our known challenges, and therefore for the future of the nation. My feeling of unease is further informed by the fears I know are shared by many throughout our continent that they face the threat that because of our internal conflicts, South Africa can lose its ability to defend its possibility to be an example of resolute African independence, self-determination and African pride. Dit is dié tyd van die jaar wanneer die wit stinkhoutbome begin kaal staan en n geelbleek son kragloos skyn en lang koue skaduwee s gooi. n Tyd wat die ware jagters begin droom van sku koedoes in die Waterberge, of die stywebeen bokspring-pronk van springbokke in wye Karoovlaktes en die geur van kruiebossies om jou warrel. Dit is ook die tyd van die jaar wanneer mans seuns word en seuns manne word wanneer dit kom by die aankoop van jaguitrusting. In die eindelose gesprekke van verskillende geweerkalibers, ballistiek, teleskope of herlaai is daar mos altyd n kenner of beterweter en iemand wat iets wil leer. Maar dit is ook dié tyd van die jaar wat diereliefhebbers ten hemele skree oor die afskuwelikheid van jag. Ja, dieselfde persoon wat al smullende aan n kruisskyf die koerant lees en verontwaardig te velde trek hoe jagters al Suid-Afrika se diere doodmaak. Die Dierebeskermingsvereniging het met reg n rol te speel teen wreedheid teen diere en is vinnig om voorskriftelik te wees hoe n dier doodgemaak kan word. Dieselfde verenging sal egter nie daarvan droom om jag te wil verbied nie, suiwer omrede hulle besef dat jag n multimiljoen rand bedryf geword het, wat werk en voedsel skep en dikwels die behoud van talle boere is. Laat dit baie duidelik gestel word, etiese jag is verantwoordelik vir die behoud en aanwas van wild. Daarteenoor is wildstropery (poaching) iets wat deur enige reggeskape jagter ten sterkste veroordeel word. Suid-Afrika het sowat jagplase waarvan nagenoeg die helfte goedgekeurde geproklameerde jagplase is. Dit is wildplase wat aan streng voorwaardes in terme van heinings en hul bedryf moet voldoen. Op die plase word uitsluitlik met wild met die oog op jag geboer. Om op hierdie plase te gaan jag is n peperduur ekskursie en omtrent 90% van dié het n professionele jagter byderhand om die kliënt by te staan en toe te sien dat daar eties gejag word. Sommige van die plase se reëls is selfs so streng dat as sou die jagter misgeskiet het, hy vir daardie skoot moet betaal. Hierdie plase is almal gerat om oorsese jagters te lok en vyfster behandeling te gee. Die oorblywende plase is plase waar daar deels met gewone vee (skaap of bees) en wild geboer word, maar waar veld wat nie daarvoor geskik is nie, benut word met wildspesies wat daarop aard en gedy. Dikwels is dit juis die wild-deel wat die boer deur die drif help in tye van droogte. Die kernpunt is daar is nie n boer in Suid-Afrika wat nie die waarde van wild besef nie en daar is bloedweinig plekke waar n jagter soos in dae van ouds, verniet sal kan gaan skiet. Boere vertroetel die bate en wakker die aanteel van hul wild aan. Enige etiese jagter is gekant teen geblikte' jag. Dit is waar diere in n beperkte gebied aangehou word en geen kans het om weg te kom nie. Die dae toe jy n geweer kon gryp, veld toe stap (of ry) en skiet is lankal verby. 9 PRETORIA NORTH REKORD FRIDAY MAY 30, Young Ad Designers awards The Young Ad Designers Competition 2014 had their award ceremony on Monday 19 May, at the Open Window School of Visual Communication. According to s group editor and the top mind behind this project, Sunette Visser, the main objective of the project was to inspire local creative minds. With this special project we aimed to provide imaginative, young individuals with an opportunity to gain creative confidence, as it is they who will mature into radical discoverers, inventors and changemakers, Visser said. The evening s proceedings were led by s advertising sales manager, Sabine Goodwin, while the prizes were handed out by Visser. The winners in the three categories received prizes totalling R , including a bursary and short courses from the Open Window School of Visual Communication, cash prizes from Netbank and art supplies from Jimnettes. The over-all winning school of the project was Sutherland High School, who won the grand prize of an Epson interactive projector. Attending the evening on behalf of the executive mayor of the Tshwane metro was Nozipho Makeke, a member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for sports, recreation, arts and culture council. Bestaande uit Daniel Po Potgieter, Rixi Roman, Bruce Wallace, Wynand Delport en Marcel Dedman het dié groep bekend as The Daniel Po Band in die Engelse mark reeds goed vir hulleself naamgemaak en spog met die room van Suid-Afrikaanse musikante. Hul eerste Afrikaanse album, Sonskyn in die Aand, is n sielvolle 13-snit album met liedjies wat jou die een oomblik na n sneesdoekie sal laat gryp en die volgende oomblik uit volle bors sal laat saamsing. Luister gerus na Bosmeisie, Aan die Brand en Kyk In My Oë. Rekord het met Daniel Po Potgieter oor die nuwe Afrikaanse groep gesels. Hoe het jy by die musiekbedryf betrokke geraak? Ek speel meestal kitaar en sing, maar ek kan bietjie klavier en dromme ook speel. Ek en n paar vriende het toe op universiteit vir die plesier begin musiek maak. Julle is eintlik as Engelse groep bekend. Hoe het dit gbeur dat julle n Afrikaanse album uitgereik het? Ons is almal baie Afrikaanse ouens en alhoewel die Engelse taal meer vryheid in musiek het, ken ons ook die Afrikaanse mark. Ek het self al liedjies vir Dozi en Gerhard Steyn geskryf. Hoe het julle op die groep se naam, Appelblou, besluit? Baie mens hou nie van die storie nie. Ek het n Afrikaanse liedjie vir Dalene Mathee geskryf toe sy oorlede is. n Platemaatskappy het die liedjie gehoor en gevra waarom ek dit nie opneem nie. Ek het nie geweet watter naam om die liedjie te gee nie so toe sit ek n vrug en kleur bymekaar. Die liedjie is toe die Maandag opgeneem, die Dinsdag op n album gesny en dit het die Woensdag op RSG gespeel. Dit was n heel natuurlike keuse vir ons as Afrikaanse groep se naam. Waar kry jy inspirasie vir julle liedjies? Op Appelblou het ek al die liedjies behalwe die duet geskryf en ek sou sê ek is eerstens n liedjieskrywer en dan n musikant. Wanneer ek skryf probeer ek gewoonlik eers die konsep vir die spesifieke liedjies uitwerk voor ek dit in woorde omsit. Dan soek ek altyd daardie een idee wat uitstaan wat die titel sal wees. Ek hou daarvan om stories met my liedjies te vertel. Selfs al gaan dit oor verhoudings of moeilike tye, ek probeer altyd n boodskap iewers oorbring. Een van die liedjies is getiteld Adam en Eva. Vertel ons bietjie daarvan. In my weergawe van Adam en Eva woon hulle op Pelgrimsrus maar selfs honderde jare later herhaal die geskiedenis homself. Wat is jou gunsteling liedjie op die album? Ek het twee gunstelinge, Aan Die Brand wat ek geskryf het nadat die album reeds klaar opgeneem was en dan ook Kyk In My Oë wat gaan oor my eie ervaringe. Jy sing n duet saam met jou broer, Gerhard Steyn, vertel ons hoe dit gebeur het? Dit was vreeslik lekker om die duet saam met my broer op te neem en hy is baie ondersteunend. Elke keer as hy iets oor die album in die media lees laat hy my weet maar dit was nooit die plan om een van sy liedjies te cover nie. Dit was n toevallige besluit en die idee was meer om Baby Tjoklits as n huldeblyk vir my broer op te neem. Wat is Appelblou se toekomsplanne? Vir nou gaan ons eers die nuwe album bemark en soveel moontlik blootstelling Appelblou se eerste Afrikaanse album, is n sielvolle 13-snit album. probeer kry. The figures show that our average home loan approval rate for the past 12 months was 77%, compared with 69% in the previous 12 months, said BetterBond CEO Shaun Rademeyer, and that the value of home loans approved through BetterBond showed a year-on-year increase at the end of April of 9.5% to a total of almost R39 billion. Two former Comrades marathon champions are ready to go head-tohead to claim this year s coveted prize. According to Nick Bester, Pretoria s own Comrades legend and nowadays the national manager of the Nedbank Running Club, Ludwick Mamobola and Claude Moshiywa, winners of the 2012 and 2013 Comrades marathons respectively, have made their intentions clear ahead of this year s race. The race takes place on 1 June. Mamobola, who won the previous down run in 2012, has had the perfect build up to this year s Comrades. I didn t do too many long runs but instead concentrated on shorter, faster tempo runs. I also made sure Midway through the second round of the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup at the University of Pretoria s Sports Centre, the Jaguars still top the log and appear to be the team to beat. But their close neighbours the Golden Fireballs probably the most experienced team in the competition are looking better with every match they play, and they could well challenge the Jaguars for the title in the final on 8 June. The Nedbank Running Club s national woman s line-up also boasts some impressive names such as Charné Bosman and Caroline Wostmann who will be at the forefront. Bosman, from Centurion, will be competing in her second Comrades and she is more than ready. She trained in Graskop on the tough undulating roads in Mpumalanga and is very confident about this year s race and a repeat as the first South African woman to cross the finish line. Caroline Wostman, who missed last year s race as a result of a stress fracture, learnt from her mistakes and Bester is predicting a top ten finish for her. 27 PRETORIA NORTH REKORD FRIDAY MAY 30, Hoewel Polisie Vrydagaand op Loftus Versfeld in n Carltonbekerwedstryd gelykop teen Centurion gespeel het, het hulle die voortou op die puntelys geneem en is tans een punt voor Tukkies. Die studente het egter een wedstryd minder gespeel, nadat hulle verlede week n loslootjie gehad het weens die Silver Valke se onttrekking. - Polisie en Centurion het met n puik vertoning Vrydagaand op Loftus Versfeld gesorg dat toeskouers wat die Bulls teen die Brumbies ondersteun het, goeie waarde vir hul geld gekry het deur top klubrugby as bonus te kon sien. Dié wedstryd het met 26-elk gelykop geëindig. Polisie het die wedstryd voorlangs oorheers en dit is nogal vreemd om vir die tweede week agtereenvolgens te sien dat n pak voorspelers wat deur Christo Bezuidenhout afgerig word, in die vaste skrums pakslae kry. Tot Centurion se krediet moet egter genoem word dat hulle tans sukkel met beserings aan sleutelspelers. Centurion se puik lostrio, met die woelige Bertus Coetzee vooraan, het egter in die los opgemaak vir hul gesukkel in die vaste fasette. Hulle het Polisie se puik lostrio, met manne soos Louis van Biljon en Gerhard du Preez in hul geledere, harde bene laat kou by die afbreekpunte. Centurion se beste speler was weer hul losskakel, Steven Moir. Sy taktiese skopwerk was uit die boonste rakke en hy het sy span in die prentjie gehou met sy akkurate skopvoet, ten spyte van die feit dat Polisie Een van die grootste uitdagings vir enige Suid-Afrikaner is om die Comrades-marathon te voltooi. Dít is uiteraard n besonderse prestasie wat harde werk en baie dissipline verg. Om die Comrades meer as een keer te voltooi is dus soveel meer van n prestasie, wat tot dusver n nog kleiner groep toegewyde atlete beskore was. Dan is daar die ware ystermanne van die langpad wat begin om spesiale nommers te versamel. Dit is hulle wat só verslaaf raak aan die pyn en opwin ding van hierdie wedloop, dat hulle jaar na jaar terugkeer vir nog. Zirk Lourens, n kolonel in die Suid- Afrikaanse weermag en inwoner van Centurion, is een van hierdie Comradesveterane. Hy tree op 1 Junie vanjaar aan vir sy 30e Comrades-marathon. Wat Lourens se prestasie nóg groter maak, is dat hy vanjaar sy driedubbele groen nommer ontvang. Hy een drie meer as hulle gedruk het. Vir Polisie het hul veteraan kaptein, die 37-jarige Nico Luus, weer gewys dat ouderdom nie so n groot faktor is as jy fiks en gemotiveerd is nie. Dié gewese SupeRugbyspeler van die Lions het die veld vol gespeel en sy ervaring bly een van Polisie se grootste troefkaarte. Op regtervleuel het Ruan van Loo ook weer gewys dat hy nog goed genoeg is om Curriebekerrugby te kan speel. Dan is daar Polisie se senterpaar, Pieter Strydom en Heinrich Rademeyer, wat waarskynlik al n paar rekords agter hul naam het as kombinasie. Hulle speel egter nog puik rugby en bewys week na week dat die moderne neiging om met groter en sterker senters te speel nie altyd so effektief is nie. Veral Strydom se vreeslose verdediging teen groot senters is gewoonlik iets besonders om te sien. - Saterdag se wedstryd tussen Tukkies en Oostelikes het weer gewys dat Tukkies nie maklik onttroon gaan word as Carltonbekerkampioene nie. Tukkies het die wedstryd op n drafstap met gewen. Die studente het die luuksheid om gebruik te maak van professionele spelers en met n vaste vyf soos Juan Schoeman, Sidney Tobias, Basil Short, Dennis Visser en Reniel Hugo gaan Tukkies nie maklik vanjaar geklop word nie. Agter hul puik pak voorspelers het Emile Temperman, waarskynlik die mees onderskatte skrumskakel in Pretoria, baljaar. Hoewel Oostelikes geen swak span het nie en self met gewese professionele spelers soos Henri Bantjies, Gerhard Engelbrecht, Imille Keyser, Riekert Hattingh en Niel sal aantree vir sy 30e agtereenvolgende Comrades. Dit het alles vir Lourens begin in 1983, toe hy in die destydse Ciskei gestasioneer was. n Vriend van hom wat besig was om vir die wedloop te oefen het hom daardie jaar slegs vier weke voor die marathon oortuig om saam te begin draf. Hy onthou nog goed hoe onfiks hy in daardie stadium was en hy het gesukkel om oor n afstand van 4km by te hou. Sy belangstelling was egter geprikkel en daardie jaar het hy vir die eerste keer die wedloop op TV gevolg. Toe hy sien hoe die duisende mense van verskillende groottes en ouderdomme die wedloop voltooi, het hy daar en dan besluit hy wil dit ook doen. Hy het later daardie jaar ernstig begin oefen saam met sy vriend en op 31 Mei 1984 sy eerste van 29 agtereenvolgende Comradesmarathons voltooi. Lourens sê die twee wedlope wat uitstaan is sy tiende, toe hy sy eerste groen nom- Heinrich Rademeyer, buitesenter van Polisie, glip deur n gaping in Vrydagaand se Carltonbeker-kragmeting teen Centurion op Loftus Versfeld. Rademeyer was oudergewoonte een van die Bobbies se uitblinkers. Dié twee spanne het uiteindelik met 26-elk gelykop gespeel. Foto: GB Jordaan Meyer in hul geledere spog, was Tukkies voorlangs net te sterk en agterlangs net te vinnig en vaardig vir die manne van Oostelikes om by te hou. Die telling kan die verkeerde indruk skep dat Tukkies gemors het met die manne van Oostelikes. Dit was egter n baie harder stryd as wat die telling aandui. Die verskil was dat Tukkies wéét hoe om af te rond en byna elke keer as hulle die geleentheid kry, teken hulle punte aan. Daarenteen het Oostelikes gereeld gesien dat geleenthede verlore gaan waarvoor hulle hard gewerk het. - In die derde wedstryd van die naweek het die Tshwane Universiteit van Tegnologie (TUT) hul eerste oorwinning in vanjaar se toernooi behaal toe hulle die Naka Bulle met geklop het. TUT het gewys dat hulle steeds goeie teenstand kan bied teen enige opponent. Naka Bulle bly egter voor TUT op die puntelys, nadat hulle twee bonuspunte uit die wedstryd verdien het. Volgende naweek speel die tradisionele aartsvyande, Tukkies en Polisie, teen mekaar op Tukkies se veld, terwyl Centurion gasheer sal speel vir TUT en Oostelikes tuis sal speel teen Harlequins, wat die afgelope naweek n loslootjie gehad het. Die Naka Bulle kry n ruskans met n loslootjie. Hierdie woorde kom nie van een of ander oorywerige Bulls-ondersteuner nie, maar is die mening van die Wallabie-agtsteman en Brumbies-kaptein, Ben Mowen, nadat sy span Vrydagaand ordentlik met deur die Bulls geklop is. Ná hierdie sege het die Bulls tydelik opgeskuif tot onder die top ses op die puntelys, maar weens die ander uitslae die naweek is hulle tans terug in die negende plek. Die interessante deel van hierdie feit is dat daar tussen die Bulls in die negende plek op die lys en die Waratahs in die tweede plek slegs ses punte verskil is. Slegs die Sharks met hul 44 ligapunte in die eerste posisie kan redelik seker wees van n plek in die uitspeelrondtes. Enige vyf van die ander spanne tussen die tweede en negende posisies kan nog deel uitmaak van die top ses wanneer die laaste wedstryde in die ligafase op 12 Julie vanjaar gespeel word. Eerskomende naweek speel die Crusaders byvoorbeeld tuis teen die Western Force en die Chiefs speel in Wellington teen die Waratahs. Al vier hierdie spanne is tans bo die Bulls, maar indien die Bulls daarin kan slaag om die sukkelende Lions met volpunte te klop in hul tweedstryd op Ellispark, kan sake voor die reses van vier weke reeds só verander dat die Bulls terug sal wees in die top ses. Enigiets kan ook eerskomende naweek in die wedstryd tussen die Hurricanes en die Blues, wat op laasgenoemde se tuisveld in Auckland gespeel word, gebeur, terwyl die Reds ook hard sal veg om hul swak posisie op die puntelys te verbeter wanneer hulle die Highlanders in Brisbane aanvat. Ná die Juniemaand-reses moet spanne soos die Highlanders (teen die Chiefs, Waratahs en Crusaders), die Hurricanes (teen die Crusaders en Chiefs) en die Western Force (teen die Blues, Reds en Brumbies) nog almal moeilike hekkies oorkom en die kanse is goed dat hulle elkeen ten minste een keer sal verloor. As die Bulls dus kan aanhou wen (teen die Lions in Johannesburg, Stormers in Kaapstad en Rebels op Loftus Versfeld) behoort hulle beslis deel te wees van die top ses wat in die uitspeelfase betrokke sal wees. Die Bulls se moeilikste hekkie sal die stryd op 5 Julie in Kaapstad teen die Stormers wees, aangesien die Kapenaars tans weer kookwaterrugby speel. Die Bulls is egter ook nie meer die sukkelspan van die eerste deel van vanjaar se SupeRugby-reeks nie. Na al die probleme wat die span moes oorkom, speel hulle tans puik rugby en as hulle kan voortbou op Vrydagaand se vertoning teen die Brumbies, kan hulle selfs nog n aanslag op die titel maak. Vrydagaand se eerste helfte was n kli niese vertoning waarin die Bulls een van die top spanne in die reeks en verlede jaar se finalis tot oorgawe gedwing het. Die Brum bies is een van die min spanne wat die Sharks vanjaar kon klop, terwyl hulle ook al met die Waratahs (tans tweede op die puntelys) en verlede jaar se kampioene, die Chiefs, afgereken het. Die Bulls se skrumwerk is tans puik, hul lynstaanwerk tel onder die beste in die toernooi en die algehele kohesie in die span is besig om aan hulle broodnodige momentum te gee. As beserings aan sleutelspelers wegbly, is daar geen rede waarom die Bulls nie oor die naweek van 19 Julie deel kan wees van die kwarteindrondte van 2014 se SupeRugbytoernooi nie v0 Die Bulls se puik skrumskakel, Francois Hougaard, het sy huidige goeie spelpeil gehandhaaf in Vrydagaand se klipharde SupeRugby-wedstryd teen die Brumbies.
