photo: Peter Kooijman photo: Jeroen Musch Jobsveem Lloydstraat EA Rotterdam The former warehouse and national monument Jobsveem, also known as St Job, on the quay of the Lloyd Pier in Rotterdam, has been changed significantly The design by Mei in collaboration with architect Wessel de Jonge breathes new life into the old warehouse Since its completion in 1913, is was extremely introverted This was done to protect the stored goods from too much daylight, rain and wind The structure involved the use of construction methods that were very advanced for their time: long floors (130x25m) with cast-iron columns of different heights Converting it to apartments and commercial spaces was an opportunity to bring daylight into the building with 3 glazed atria The light courts of glass and steel emphasise the monumental components that have been carefully restored They are lively, light spaces where residents can meet one another In warm weather, and also in the event of calamities such as fire, the glazed roof opens and a light breeze blows through the atrium Floor area/size m² Main designer, Building physics consultant Structural engineer Technical engineer Contractor Mei architects and planners Wessel de Jonge DGMR Pieters Bouwtechniek Reuser Technisch adviesbureau Volker Bouwmaatschappij BAM Vastgoed en BAM Volker Bouwmaatschappij Mei photo: Jeroen Musch If you would like to visit the building from the inside or if you re interested in a guided tour, please contact Mei architects and planners to make an appointment They have their office inside the Schiecentrale Call + 31 (0) or pr@mei-archeu Tram 8 (from Central Station with direction Spangen) stops in front (stop: Pieter de Hooghweg) Metro Coolhaven is 5 minutes walking At 2 minutes walking there is also a place to park your boat, or to get of the water-taxi You can park your car in front of the complex (paid) See for more information on the whole complex 7

photo: DigiDaan photo: DigiDaan Public Playground on Mullerpier Mullerkade EH Rotterdam The design for a school, sport and public square is a pilot project, resulting from a research into the potential of playgrounds for the public domain in 2007 It is a schoolyard for the primary school nearby, as well a public square In the surroundings, there are several other functions, such as a home for elderly people, a business centre, a theatre and housing There is a sports square where the older children can play more competitive games, and a smaller square where all children, but especially the younger ones, can play safely in a diverse way Around the square is a green hedge, which together with the green rubber ground with a pattern of leaves, relates to the theme of 'a secret garden' More green, shelter and means to play is what the square offers today The final result challenges children to play in different ways, while adults are invited to use the square as an outdoor accommodation in their neighbourhood photo: DigiDaan Floor area/size m², Landscape architect Bekkering Adams en Bekkering_Adams Municipality of Rotterdam 24/7 Take tram number 8 (from Rotterdam Central Station) to Pieter de Hoochweg 9

Opera OT St Jobsweg EH Rotterdam The existing building of the Onafhankelijk Toneel (The Independent Theatre) was extended by adding a new free-seating theatre with 180 seats, an entrance foyer and amenities The concept of a building within a building was used to provide space for the props, riggings and stagecraft all around, while keeping the interior of the theatre serenely empty This has enhanced the versatility of the building, since the area around the theatre can be used both as backstage and a public area The construction and technique of the actual making of the theatre has deliberately been made visible Within the theatre, the physical presence of technology is kept to the absolute minimum, so as not to distract from the performance (Franz Ziegler) photo: Rotterdam Marketing Franz Ziegler Onafhankelijk Toneel Rotterdam boeboe The ticket desk is open Monday to Friday 12:00-17:00 hours Evenings depend on the agenda of that day Check the website Tram: Tram 8 with direction Spangen Get out at stop Pieter de Hoochweg You can clearly see the OT Theatre from the tram stop (± 5 min walking) Metro: Calandlijn to Spijkenisse / Schiedam, get out at stop Coolhaven Cross the bridge and walk straight on (± 10 min walking) 10

photo: Jan van der Ploeg photo: Bas Czerwinski Euromast Parkhaven GM Rotterdam The Euromast was built on the occasion of the Floriade, an international exposition on horticulture The tower is named Euromast Euro because Rotterdam is in the heart of the European market and mast because not only Dutch know what the word means but also English, Germans, Swedes, Norwegians and Danes They also use the word mast At a height of 32 m Dutch architect Maaskant provided the tower with a replica of a ship s bridge complete with navigation systems and a chartroom In this room the public could experience what it means to navigate a sea-vessel Made of reinforced concrete and 9 m in diameter (inside) it has walls that are 30 cm thick The foundation consists of 131 concrete piles On these piles rests a block of reinforced concrete weighing 1,900,000 kilograms and serving as a counterweight to the aboveground construction The crow s nest restaurant - weighing 240 tons - was ingeniously hoisted up in five days up to 100 m above ground 1960 Contractor Hugh A Maaskant JP van Eesteren NV Eurotoren boeboe photo: Rotterdam Marketing The Euromast is open daily, all year round April up to September: from 930 to 2300 hrs October up to March: from 1000 to 2300 hrs Different opening hours apply during Christmas and around New Year s Day Platforms open till 2200 hrs Last ride Euroscoop at 2145 hrs Brasserie open till 2300 hrs Tram: From the Central Station you can reach the Euromast without changing by tram 8 direction Spangen Get off at Euromast stop Underground: From the Central Station you can also take the underground to Dijkzigt You have to change at Churchillplein/Beurs 11

photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Naomi Schiphorst Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd Floor area/size m² Piet Blom City of Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven The show-cube at number 70 is open daily, from 11:00-17:00 h Entrance: 2 euro For more information see the website wwwkubuswoningnl Take the Subway or train to Station Blaak Or tram

photo: Ulrich Schwarz photo: Ulrich Schwarz Urban Podium Rotterdam Grotekerkplein 3011 GC Rotterdam Situated between the gothic Sint Laurenskerk and the Delftsevaart canal, the Grotekerkplein was formed only during the course of the modernist reconstruction of the city center, which was almost entirely destroyed during WW2 Despite its central location the square hardly plays a role in the city life, as no shopping streets connect it to the rest the public spaces, and only a few facilities are oriented towards the square itself Therefore the idea emerged to activate the square programmatically as well as spatially through the construction of a small theater pavilion, in order to fill the displeasing vacuum within the city fabric The built theater podium interprets the task at hand consistently and maybe a little surprisingly as a mostly urbanistic operation The existing situation is taken as a starting point and improved through a targeted and powerful gesture A 40m long structure forcefully separates square and canal in order to enhance their respective spatial legibility photo: Ulrich Schwarz Floor area/size m² Building costs consultant Contractor Atelier Kempe Thill ABT JP van Eesteren Rotary Club Rotterdam North, Foundation Grotekerkplein 13

photo: Rob Hoekstra photo: Rob Hoekstra Red Apple Wijnhaven 3011 Rotterdam The Red Apple is located in the vivacious heart of Rotterdam This landmark contains 231 apartments and penthouses that all overlook the river Maas or the Old Port The head of The Red Apple, is made out of the converging lines of the Wijnhaven Island and are joined together in a pentagonal volume, hanging over the base On the southwest corner is the sleek apartment tower with a glass lobby and entrance on the ground floor and residential / work lofts above In the skyline of Rotterdam, The Red Apple is characterized by its bright red façade lines These lines are formed from anodized aluminium panels without adding paint The lifestyle concept and the interior, is designed together with Jan des Bouvrie The name is an obvious reference to another metropolis, the Big Apple, New York City But the name also refers to the first function of this site since it was here that flat-bottomed boats moored and unloaded their cargo of apples to be sold in nearby markets Project is not public! 19 photo: Groothandelsgebouw photo: Cor Groot - KpC management Groothandelsgebouw Stationsplein AK Rotterdam Designed by Dutch architect Hugh A Maaskant ( ), the Groothandelsgebouw was completed in 1953 It consists of a whole block, measuring 220 by 85 metres Both the load-bearing structure of the building and the façade elements, which partly include fixed sun screens, are made of concrete The building was designed to provide space for small to medium sized companies During the design phase, client Frits Pot and architect Maaskant made a research trip to America The elevated street running through the building on the first floor speaks of an enthusiastic belief in an automobile future they might have picked up on that trip Today, the building is still being used according to its initial purpose, providing office and commercial space for short and long term rent The elevated street running through the three courtyards can be entered from a ramp on the north side of the building (Conradstraat) In 2005 the building was revitalised by architect office Jvan Stigt photo: Groothandelsgebouw Floor area/size m² Main designer,, Urban planner, Urban planner Hugh A Maaskant mby enbureau J van Stigt Willem J van Tijen Frits Pot Next to Rotterdam Central Station 19

Cafe De Unie Mauritsweg JT Rotterdam During the bombing of the city centre of Rotterdam on the 14th of May 1940 in World War II, the original building by JJP Oud was destroyed It stood at the Coolsingel In 1986 the façade was reproduced by architect Carel Weeber at the Mauritsweg, in a part of Rotterdam that was spared from the bombs The design is a perfect example of the Dutch artistic moment De Stijl with its use of primary colours and simple abstract composition of vertical and horizontal directions Next to the Rietveld-Schröderhuis in Utrecht it is a very clear cut completion of the ideals of the movement The ground floor houses a bar and restaurant In the back is a small theatre 1925 JJP Oud De Unie NGHM photo: Rob Niemantsverdriet About 5 minutes walking from central station Leave the train station and walk straight on, in the Mauritsweg It is halfway on the left 20

photo: MVRDV Courtesy photo: MVRDV Courtesy Didden Village Beatrijsstraat RC Rotterdam The first realization in MVRDV's home town Rotterdam is a rooftop house extension On top of an existing monumental house and atelier, the bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building Parapet walls with windows surround the new village Trees, tables, open-air showers and benches are added, optimizing the rooftop life By finishing all elements with a blue poly-urethane coating a new 'heaven' appears It creates a crown on top of the monument The addition can be seen as a prototype for a further densification of the old and existing city It adds a roof life to the city It explores the costs for the beams, infrastructure, and extra finishes, and it ultimately aims to be lower than the equivalent ground price photo: MVRDV Courtesy Project is not public! 46 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Kiefhoek Hendrik Idoplein Rotterdam The Kiefhoek rises in a working class quarter in southern Rotterdam Oud projected a complete modern neighbourhood, keeping the traditional concept of the street as an exterior room completely delimited, like HP Berlage defended By designing elongated rows of 300 standardized dwellings, Oud elaborated the concept of Existenz-minimum for low-budget public housing The blocks have an unitary aspect Most houses were meant for two families and had very compact ground plans without corridors, while along the short side-streets, larger houses were erected for big families Although Oud had wished to build the estate in concrete, all houses had to be constructed in brick and the foundations were reduced to a minimum, both for economic reasons The horizontalizing, white-rendered exteriors had plinths in yellow brick and were enlivened by primary colours Two round-cornered shops, a cubic ornament-less church, a hot-water station, playgrounds and small gardens completed Kiefhoek estate photo: José F García Martín 1930 JJP Oud Jose_Garcia Booked visit 46
