2 For the first time in Paris, a selection of representative and historically important pieces of Brazilian design dating from 1950 to 1980 has been gathered by the for the exhibition "Modernity of Brazilian Design from 1950 to 1980" which will take place from 6 September to 31 October 2018 at the gallery located 5 rue Bonaparte in Paris, France. 7 iconic designers, 25 vintage rare and iconic pieces of furniture, await to be discovered at this event. All exhibited pieces boast prestigious provenance, coming directly from important private collections in Brazil or directly from architect or designer studios. The exhibition marks the culmination of in-depth research carried out by Aline Chastel over the last three years. Jose Zanine Caldas ( ), "Namoradeira" conversation seat in solid pequi wood, created by the designer for his home in Joatinga near Rio de Janeiro circa Signed "Zanine" twice on the base and on each side of the seat.

3 Giuseppe Scapinelli ( ) Coffee table "Agua" in burnished wood, circa Asymmetric sculptural footing carrying an organic shape frame in which is inserted a glass table top. This elegant table is part of a series conceived in the 1950s in an organic style inspired by Isamu Noguchi s furniture cm x 121 cm x 75 cm The designers presented at the exhibition Modernity of Brazilian Design from 1950 to 1980, who are primarily architects with origins in Europe, draw their inspiration from both personal references and local culture, creating a form of syncretism. The paubrasilia, a wood appearing red thanks to the presence of brazilin, being the source of the name of the country Brazil, this cultural mix notably manifests itself in their use of exotic woods like jacaranda, vinhatico and pequi. Joaquim Tenreiro, for instance, found jacaranda wood s unique characteristics ideal for creating truly modern pieces. Carlo Hauner, Martin Eisler and Jorge Zalszupin also combined this typically Brazilian wood with industrial materials such as metal and concrete. These have created the modern Brazilian furniture to be discovered at the gallery from 6 September to 31 October.

4 From French decorative arts to avant-garde Brazilian design Aline Chastel, founder and director of the Galerie Chastel-Maréchal. Member of the Syndicat National des Antiquaires in the 20 th century design section and an associate member of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Aline Chastel takes part in the most prestigious international fairs: Design Miami/Basel, PAD Paris and London, Masterpiece (London), BRAFA (Brussels), The Salon Art + Design (New York), FOG (San Francisco) or the Paris Biennale. Until now, the gallery has been focusing mostly on famous names in French design from 1930 to 1970, such as Line Vautrin, Jean Royère, Serge Roche, Georges Jouve or André Arbus. Today, Aline Chastel, the founder of the gallery, is bringing a new dynamic into play by presenting pieces by some of the most remarkable modern Brazilian designers. Aline Chastel s passion for Brazil began through the discovery of Brazilian music rhythms she discovered as a teenager. As a student, she was spellbound by the utopian architecture of Oscar Niemeyer on her first trip to Brasilia. Shortly afterwards, she was deeply moved by the exhibition on Jose Zanine Caldas held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in Having explored Alex Pommier

5 For the last edition of the PAD Paris 2018, the Galerie Chastel Maréchal showcased a preview of selected pieces of modern Brazilian furniture alongside works by Alberto Giacometti and Jean Royère. the world of decorative arts in Europe for 25 years, and having travelled to Brazil, researching and presenting these artists was obvious. In 2015, Aline Chastel meets with a young antique dealer, Mikael Najjar, who travels regularly to Brazil. Together they source and buy modern Brazilian design, Aline Chastel picking the pieces for her exhibition in Paris. Over three years of travel, research, discoveries and encounters, she gathered 25 vintage rare pieces of furniture by some of the most renowned and typical designers from 1950 to The also collaborated with Marcelo Vasconcellos (Memo Gallery, Rio de Janeiro) on this project which is enriched with a new reference book on modern Brazilian furniture, to which the gallery contributed. For Aline Chastel, Brazilian design production between 1950 and 1980 manifests the desire of their creators to remain close to nature, to respect it, and to embrace a specific sense of freedom. Such an avant-garde ecological perspective is especially relevant nowadays.

Two examples are Miroirs which focuses on Line Vautrin s works or the monography dedicated to Serge Roche which has become a must-have for the amateurs of the designer. For Modernity of Brazilian Design from 1950 to 1980, Aline Chastel has once more drawn from both her experience and passion to offer a new perspective on a key period in the history of decorative arts and design by selecting pieces by seven renowned Brazilian architects and designers active in the second half of the 20 th century: Jose Zanine Caldas, Joaquim Tenreiro, the duo Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, Jorge Zalszupin, Sergio Rodrigues and Giuseppe Scapinelli. Inspired by Oscar Niemeyer s modern vision, designers such as Joaquim Tenreiro and Sergio Rodrigues moved away from Indo-Portuguese style furniture to create pieces with fluid, elegant lines. Perfectly adapted to modern interiors, their designs hold fast to their Brazilian identity while reflecting foreign influences. Brazilian architects and designers put their conception of modernity into practice very quickly: innovative and audacious, their work reflects strong social ideals. The aesthetic and technical particularity of their designs stems primarily from the essences of wood they use: jacaranda, pequi, peroba, imbuia, juerana and vinhatico are all woods that are dense, resistant but also light. Joaquim Tenreiro ( ) is one of the precursors of modern Brazilian design, as his creations from the late 1940s show. The simple lines of his pieces are characteristic of this new style. His knowledge of wood enabled him to make beautifully constructed pieces in carefully chosen materials, with an authentic Brazilian feel. His pure, elegant style gives his work a timeless quality. The prolific designer Sergio Rodrigues ( ) opened his own gallery, Oca, in Rio de Janeiro in 1955 having studied architecture. On Oscar Niemeyer s request, he designed the furniture for the Palácio do Planalto, the presidential palace in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil inaugurated in His unique style is recognisable for its generous approachability; a reflection of the Brazilian identity that meant so much to him. As for Jose Zanine Caldas ( ), the rediscovery of his massive, brutalist furniture-sculptures, made for each of his wooden houses, underlines the talent of this exceptional artist whose work combined landscaping, architecture, design and sculpture. An ardent admirer and protector of the forest and of tropical woods, his respect for his materials led him to recycle wood as early as the 1960s. Comprising a selection of his most emblematic pieces, the exhibition pays him resounding homage a first in Paris. On completion of his studies at the Brera Fine Art Academy (Milan), Carlo Hauner ( ) settled in Sao Paulo and began his career as a designer with his brother by buying Lina Bo Bardi and Pietro Bardi s factory. The company Moveis Artesanal was created in 1951, producing made to measure furniture commissioned

7 by architects such as Gregori Warchavchik and Lina Bo Bardi herself. Carlo Hauner then met the designer Martin Eisler ( ) from Austria, with whom he cofounded the Artesanal Gallery in 1953, which later became Forma, a company which produced furniture characterized by clean lines and organic formalism. The visionary designer Giuseppe Scapinelli ( ) worked as an architect for the Italian-Brazilian businessman Francesco Matarazzo, one of the forces behind the art museum and the biennial in Sao Paulo, before selling his own creations in his gallery Margutta, and writing for the magazine Casa e Jardim. Comparable to Carlo Mollino or Isamu Noguchi, his creative vocabulary is simultaneously utilitarian, spontaneous and sculptural. The architect Jorge Zalszupin (1922-), of Polish origin, moved to Brazil in Faced with the clear need for modernization and diversification in the domain of furniture made in high quality materials, he launched his own factory in His studio proposed modern pieces that combined precious woods with metal, leather, marble and concrete, an approach that reflected the desire to rationalize the use of wood.
