2 Conference Programme 12th Biennial Conference Welcome to the For the 12th Association for Low Countries Studies Biennial Conference over thirty speakers from four continents and ten countries are flocking to Sheffield to map, analyse and discuss the broad theme of Picturing Reality. Our speakers look at how, why and for whom reality is shaped, perceived and represented and how these representations impact on self-image, national stories and language status. All this in a Low Countries context. Picturing Reality may have a contemporary ring to it, but the breadth of our contributions proves it is a theme for all times. Among the historical realities we encounter are seventeenth-century comic theatre as a vehicle for social criticism; Polish views on the Dutch Republic as a military power; and the realities of queer women in Dutch novels between 1928 and On Friday night we will see how the wife of a fisherman pictures reality in the early modern play The Farce of the Fisherman. Two more realities confront us. On the up side, we will celebrate 70 Years of Dutch Studies at the University of Sheffield during our festive dinner in Weston Park Museum. What started modestly in 1948 as an option for students of German has grown into the largest Dutch Section in terms of student numbers in the Anglophone world. The final reality we have to face is the state of Dutch Studies in the UK and Ireland. During the conference, the ALCS will present its fresh report on the provision of Dutch and Dutch Studies. Its conclusions and recommendations will be examined during a round table discussion and in de wandelgangen. The 12th ALCS Conference is generously sponsored by the Nederlandse Taalunie, the Dutch Embassy and Flanders House. We are grateful for their continued support. We wish you all an inspiring conference. The ALCS Conference Committee Anna Geurts Henriette Louwerse Jenny Watson ACLS Programme - Jun18.indd 2 22/06/ :35
