Each project is described briefly and its circumstances analyzed and extensively documented via photos. The reader is taken to monumental ghost towns in Asia, grotesque remnants of amusement parks, for example in the USA, and a nuclear power plant in Crimea. The author is not aiming to uncover faults and condemn failed projects but rather to contemplate on how difficult and nearly impossible it is to predict the future for any type of endeavor. The beauty of the mountain and the concept of the theme park while it was still in operation are in harsh contrast to Aokigathara, which is also known as Jukai (sea of trees). This forest is sadly known for being a magnet for people committing suicide. The high number of suicides led to signs being put up (with English translation) to dissuade people at risk for suicide to carry out their plans. The suicide victims select various ways to end their lives. The number of victims is very high, almost the highest in the world, topped only by the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Along their own essays, the editors explore broader subjects such as the political and socio-economic process of modernization in the country, the education and professional establishment of the architectural practice in the region and the development of a comtemporary construction industry in Kuwait. The volume foreward is ilustraded by an Atlas that traces the movement of architects, planners and projects for and from Kuwait mapping a series of unprecedent reciprocities between geographical, economical, political and social realities in the this new Arab World. The afterword expands far beyond the summary of contents, challenging the contributors different narratives, overlapping the distinct fields to allow readers to formulate a local perspective based on the regional interest. A Primer for Visual Language English, 160 pages, 120 illustrations 14.8 x 21 cm 5 ¾ x 8 ¼ in., softcover with flaps ISBN ISBN October 2016 The creation of a logotype as one of the most important elements of corporate design is a challenging task for communication designers. The concept that a good logotype is by definition a persuasive logotype creates a direct link to the genre of rhetoric, which, according to Aristotle, has the power of observing the means of persuasion on almost any subject. It follows that rhetoric concepts and methods are ideally suited for understanding the effectiveness of logotypes to expand the horizon of applied design work. In this publication the author illustrates how designers can utilize the tools of rhetoric, a science that dates back more than 2,500 years. Stylistic devices play a central role in this as logotypes are analyzed and classified to determine which communicative strategies and intended effects they fulfill. The theoretical insights gained from this provide designers with a wealth of knowledge that facilitates analysis, idea generation, and argumentation along with a deeper understanding of the design process. He previously taught Architectural Studio and Exhibition Design at University of Bologna, and at American University of Kuwait (AUK). His research interests focus on mid-century modern in Europe and in the Middle East, lately as a visiting scholar at Center for Gulf Studies in Kuwait. On this subjects he contributed to several international seminars and conferences, published on international magazines and recently released two books on the work of Max Bill. Between 1949 and 1989, remarkable buildings of late modernity were constructed in the coastal city of Kuwait. Within these four decades, the city state on the Arabian Gulf was comprehensively restructured and practically redesigned. Following a first volume with 150 carefully selected exemplary buildings, this second volume features interviews, essays and arguments, as well as transcripts of contemporary publications of these years. The logo presents values or unique 8 9 In 1969, Reima and Raili Pietilä were invited to participate in an competition for the improvement of Kuwait s Old Town area. In the architects spent four weeks in Kuwait to become acquainted with Kuwait s urban milieu; in 1970 they drafted a report entitled City of Kuwait: A Future Concept. No winner of the competition was announced. Instead the planning board asked each of the four participating offices to develop a particular area of Kuwait s Old Town. The Pietiläs were assigned the development of the downtown shore area located east of the Sief Palace. In particular, they were asked to conceive three buildings: an extension of the Sief Palace, the Council of Ministers, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A certain absurdity of the paradigms determines the style of the Sief Palace Extension and, indirectly, also the style of the Ministry. The original Sief Palace consisted of two relatively small buildings constructed between 1907 and Both buildings had details such as mashrabiyas, balustrades, as well as doors framed with brick reliefs. The Old Sief Palace was directly connected to the much newer but predominant clock tower complex designed by British architects Pearce, Hubbard and Partners in In 1988 the construction of an immense government complex southwest of the two Sief Palaces (old and new) began. This complex would receive the name New Sief Palace making what had so far been called the New Sief Palace part of the Old Sief Palace. As a result, the entire old looking part of the Sief Palace, that is, the original two small buildings dating from 1917 plus the new pastiche part from 1963, would now be lumped together and receive the summary predicate Old Sief Palace. Today, tourist websites such as Kuwait-info.com and even the Government Website evoke the impression that the entire Old Sief Palace was built between 1907 and The Arch net entry on Pietilä talks about the nineteenth century Sief Palace adjacent to Pietilä s buildings, which is inaccurate because what is immediately adjacent to those buildings is the 1963 addition. The extension had to be built to what is today called the Old Sief Palace but which was called New Sief Palace when the Pietiläs were working on it. More precisely, the building contract stipulated that the Sief Palace extension was to follow the style of the original building and this irrespective of the latter s questionable originality. The Skin Technique The entire Ministry complex has the quality of being half-open because of its city-like floor plan. The other means by which Pietilä achieved openness was the skin technique that relies on a sophisticated use of cutouts and arches. However, the openness is only the secondary effect of the skin technique. The basically modern skin of the buildings enveloped an interior part containing those elements derived from Arab heritage. In this sense, the skin technique is supposed to be the right management of the tensions between identity and internationalism. The entire building suggests some of the surrealism also present in Pietilä s Dipoli building ( ) as well as in the Malmi Church project. However, in Kuwait the strategy was taken one step further. Here, the skin concept engages in the surrealistic play with inside and outside presentations, which makes possible explicit comparisons with surrealist paintings such as René Magritte s Le Double secret (Fig. 1.20) or Le Thérapeute (Fig. 1.21). At the same time, Pietilä never gave in to any kind of concrete symbolism. The Italian fashion designer Anna Battista has been fascinated by Pietilä s Ministry as an example of through tailoring because for her, the building 1.25 offers a perfect outside to inside vision.1 The Ministry Transformed What remains of Pietilä s transcultural approach today? Ambitions such as Pietilä s could have gained symbolical dimensions in a place like Kuwait where seventy percent of the population are foreigners. However, because of the above described context, it appears that the statement could not live up to the idealist intentions of its creators. In 1994, major reconstruction works began on the Ministry site, the most ambitious project being the elimination of the cutout wall openings (in spite of intensive research it has been impossible to obtain the names of the architects and companies that carried out the work). Further major transformations included turning the open corridor into a closed one (Fig and 1.43) by adding several supplementary buildings in front of the street side facade. Most of the added building parts feature arch-like shapes decorated with modernist geometrical forms such as upright standing squares placed on the top of those arches or on rooftops (Fig. 1.26, 1.27 and 1.32). Initially, the use of the arch as a main motive has been against the guidelines for the design of the Ministry complex as issued by the Ministry of Public Works in 1970, which strongly advised against monumentality. The new monumental additions, placed right on the terrace that once permitted to see parts of the building s interior from the street side, have been equipped with a dome made of stained glass (Fig. 1.47). Again this runs counter to Pietilä s intentions as he had most conscientiously avoided domes. Underneath the new dome, heavy wooden doors mark the official though practically unused main entrance of the Ministry. Smaller dome-shaped windows have been placed on the roof wherever possible. The yellow bricks have been taken off from a part of the original street façade wall, showing this section without cladding in raw concrete (Fig. 1.30). Most recently, the east façade facing the fish market has been amended by placing additions in front of the original buildings occupying a surface of 9000 square meters (Fig and 1.32). The project value of this latest addition is $15 million and the work has been carried out by the office of Dar Saleh Al Qallaf Engineering Consultants. The aesthetics of these buildings draws on the theme of the upright standing decorative squares from the earlier. We have seen ourselves, so far, breasting a sea of architectural confusion, bewildered by problems and crises; we have defined the architect s role and responsibility, and have established what meager influence he in fact has over contemporary movements. Moreover, we have surveyed the new problems and sensed the new solutions that they require. Finally we have seen that we must move from the traditional to the contemporary, from the local to the universal, and that we are returning to an ecumenic. (Doxiadis) Main Hall before. Painted aluminum reed soffits are placed on the ceiling (right side). The ceiling has a rugged shape. B. Um Qasaba chalet cluster (Slides 34937) Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait Raili and Reima Pietilä Pietilä had the double task of retrieving a non-existent past and anticipating an unclear future. How did he solve this conundrum? Was the 1963 Palace really an example of the new Islamic that the advisory committee or Kuwaiti authorities had in mind? If yes, it is safe to assume that it was not what Pietilä had in mind. With the Ministry Pietilä established a relationship with local tradition that transcended mere imitation and representation. Obviously he was looking for a new vocabulary. However, in many cases, the poetization results in a complete change of language that the local public might understand only with much difficulty. For example, the shapes of the colonnades are arguably too estranged and probably too experimental for the conservative local taste. The aluminum soffits in the corridors are painted in blue and in light green, which might look unfamiliar and inauthentic to the local eye because normally reeds are used after having been dried and are thus brown (Fig. 1.17). Further, the size of the tiles significantly differs from the traditional size of mosaic tiles and the choice of their colors is not related to any regional set of colors. Occasionally, by shying away from any literal reinstatement of shapes and items, Pietilä plays with themes that are alien to the Arab culture and seem imported. The most radical example is the silhouettes of spruce trees, which are typically European, or more specifically Finnish (Fig. 1.18). For Finns, the tree symbolizes a deep felt relationship with nature and certainly makes much sense on the Hervanta Community Center because this suburb of Tampere is located in the middle of the forest (Fig. 1.19). What feelings or thoughts do Kuwaitis associate with such trees? 13 C. Um Qasaba children's fun village (Slides 34936) Some years later, in 1968, Dr. Shiber died at the age of 45 and left behind his catalogue for the City of Kuwait, a passionate work resembling the author s dream on how to urbanize the desert by respecting and utilizing the principles of a broader but ancient non-western culture. The osmosis of the correspondence and interaction between the two men came finally in 1975, less than a year after Doxiadis s death, when the Doxiadis Associates won the second prize in an international competition for the creation of a leisure area on a waterfront not far away from the city of Kuwait. E. Um Qasaba model (DA REVIEW, April 1976) F. C. Xanthopoulos Archive_Um Qasaba Cluster Original Sticker The time frame of the competition was notably short and the loss of the leader particularly big, as the project manager of the design team Constantinos Xanthopoulos recollects from memories back in the mid-seventies (Xanthopoulos). Despite the intense workload of the office, Doxiadis had organized it in such a way that he could obtain the maximum control upon every possible project. The Um Qasaba waterfront happened to be one of the first projects that did not have his supervision. According to Professor Xanthopoulos, Doxiadis s absence during this project is evident through the deficient stance of the grid. Um Qasaba was designated to be a weekend destination for the urban residents of Kuwait since the distance from the city was less than 50km. Therefore the Tourism and Leisure Enterprise Company held a competition that required the coastal area to be articulated in several land uses in order to provide facilities and circumstances for recreation. 6 typography design typography design Hans Günter Schmitz Postage Stamp Designs From Kafka to Loriot English German, 160 pages, 100 illustrations 14.8 x 20 cm 5 ¾ x 8 in., hardcover with jacket ISBN September 2016 The world s first official postage stamp was issued in May 1840: the legendary One Penny Black with the profile of the Queen of England. The new payment system in the field of logistics by Sir Rowland Hill quickly gained hold all around the world. For the first time, this publication discusses the significance and functions of postage stamps as prominently visible elements of communication design. The expressiveness inherent in the small-sized images and the very peculiar and heterogeneous mage vocabulary of this medium of mass culture is analyzed based on more than 40 designs by Hans Günter Schmitz. The book also presents concepts that were not implemented, in addition to sketches, studies, and variations from Adenauer to the film festival Berlinale, from a mathematicians congress to the famous Wuppertal suspension railway. _ Insight into the design practice of renowned specialist _ Reflection about stamps in visual communication _ Image analysis of selected motifs _ With essay on the art of design Single-handedly literally, without heavy machinery or cranes the sculptor Hermann Rosa constructed studio spaces as accessible large-scale sculptures made of exposed concrete. On the one hand, they are open and cleverly composed surfaces, resembling the works of De Stijl or Bauhaus in the dematerialized spiritual classic modernity style while on the other hand they consist of commonplace heavy materials, similar to the down-toearth béton brut of his contemporaries Paul Rudolph or Le Corbusier. This volume sheds light on how Rosa s sculpting power and architectural spatial design melt into a singular expression. Radically and precisely he focused on the spatial and objective, foregoing any kind of color and decoration, with all details playing a subordinate role to the clarity of shape. Based on new and historic photos, sketches, plans and texts, his exceptional body of work is examined and placed in an international context. _ Interconnection of sculpture and _ Focus on the architectural and interior design projects _ View of his work in an international perspective _ Documentation by images, drawings and sketches Martin Bruhin (ed.) Wilfried Nerdinger Hans Günter Schmitz works as designer and corporate identity consultant, university professor and owner of schmitz Visuelle Kommunikation in Wuppertal. He is widely recognized as one of Germany s most renowned brand designers. Hermann Rosa ( ) was born in Pirna, Germany and studied art at the academies of Prague and Dresden, before graduating from Munich. A scholarship by the French government allowed him to spend a year in Paris, where he associated with Léger, Chagall and Nina Kandinsky. Following his return, he avoided the commercial art sector. In addition to remarkable sculptural pieces, his work also includes the architectural structures presented in this book

11 typography design typography design The digital creation and production of images in all the design professions has led today to fundamental changes in the design processes. Nevertheless, or exactly therefore, drawing as the basic design tool has gained a new importance. Designing by drawing mobilizes the eye, the head and the hand to an equal degree, and it establishes connections among the senses that the designer can only experience in a very limited way on the computer screen. The publication invites the reader to take part in a critical examination of today s sustainability fashion and our own consumer culture. Switching between activist demands and subtle humor, it shows the position of current designs at a critical turning point and offers guidelines for sustainable design processes. It presents practical tools alike to be used as basic equipment to clear the way to a social, ecological and ethically sustainable future. In the Swiss town of Lenzburg, however, the situation is somewhat different: from fall 2012 to spring 2014, well-known Swiss street artists designed 4661 square meters of wall space at the new local penitentiary. They were free to draw or spray paint anything they wanted. In more than 25,000 hours of work, a total of 1,400 spray cans and 200 liters of paint were used to turn a barren, cold concrete bunker into a lively and unique comprehensive work of art. This impressive and tangent art across eight recreation courtyards, five colonnades, a staircase, and two oversized exterior walls remains, similar to the prisoners themselves, locked up behind the heavily guarded gates and walls.
