2 2012 MONTHLY VIGNETTE COMPETITIONS 1 idea, 1 vignette, 1 winner In response to a different concept, each month applicants were challenged to distill their ideas down to a single vignette. 3 Space for the Rehabilitating February Studiofouronefour Team #1: Ryan Bratz, Joseph Buccini, Alex Harm and Nicholas Mather winning entry Studio fouronefour Studio fouronefour is comprised of a group of recent graduates of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, brought together by a shared passion for the built environment. Our mission is simple: To give great designers the opportunity and resources to continue doing what they love. Pooling our resources, talent, and enthusiasm, we have provided ourselves an environment of creativity and collaboration, where we pursue competitions, explore ideas, and occasionally take the odd job or two. When we were not able to obtain jobs in the real world with our lack of experience, we took it upon ourselves to stay up to date on technology and trends. So we took our skills and never stopped pushing them to the next level. We have experience, a bigger portfolio, and we will have had fun doing it. SOCIO DESIGN FOUNDATIONTM 2

4 Wearable Architecture: Between Architecture and Haute Couture March David McCarthy winning entry David was born in Limerick in southwest Ireland. Having moved to the U.K. to study architecture, David has now settled in Bournemouth with his fiancée where he is currently studying for a Masters in Architecture at the Arts University College Bournemouth. His tutors encourage him to push design boundaries while maintaining a critical and objective eye, fundamental skills in the architectural profession. David has worked in numerous architectural practices in the U.K and Ireland, including RB Studio in Bournemouth. He admires Marcus Novak, Neil Denari and Tom Wiscombe, and is particularly interested in architecture that challenges perception and makes use of new, innovative technologies. 5 No Foundations, No Grid: Home for the Transitory April Scott Gerald Shall winning entry Scott is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Temple University and the founding director of the International Design Clinic (IDC), a registered non-profit that realizes much-needed creative works with communities in need around the world. Since founding the IDC in 2006, Shall has worked through the IDC to realize over a dozen projects on four continents, including an urban tent for the homeless made of reclaimed water bottles and Wal-Mart bags, a vision for education based upon borrowed resources for the migrant communities of India, and a two-dollar water filtration system. Shall s work in this area has been disseminated widely, including presentations at the Third International Symposium on Service Learning in Higher Education and the 2008 International Conference on Informal Settlements and Low Income Housing, and publications through MIT Press, the AIA Press and the University of Indianapolis Press. Recently, Interior Design magazine published the work of the IDC along with projects by Kengo Kuma & Associates, OMA, Buckminister Fuller and the Arcosanti Urban Laboratory in an article highlighting practitioners who are challenging the edge of design practice. Shall s most recent work, chainlinkgreen, has been selected for exhibition at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale. SOCIO DESIGN FOUNDATIONTM 4

6 Jeanie Fan and Garland Fielder honorable mention Jeanie Fan Jeanie is a Master of Architecture I student at the University of Texas, Austin. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California Berkeley in 2003 with a major in Architecture. After graduation, she worked at Swatt Architects, an award-winning architecture firm in the Bay Area, for seven years. As a Project Manager with Swatt, Jeanie managed projects from beginning to end, contributed to schematic designs, produced construction documents, and oversaw projects during construction administration. Both projects she led or participated in subsequently won various significant awards. During her time at Swatt Architects, she also designed two monographs representing the firm s work, including many of her own graphics and drawings. Jeanie is a talented graphic designer and photographer. As a graphic freelancer, she has designed book covers, event invitations, business logos, and creative assets for business websites. In 2010, Jeanie decided to take her design endeavors to the next level by returning to school to pursue a Masters degree in architecture. Garland Fielder Born in Houston, Texas in 1971, Garland currently resides in Austin where he is pursuing a Masters of Architecture at the University of Texas. Garland s education is as robust and diverse as his artwork. He received a Bachelor s degree in philosophy and creative writing from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, a Bachelor s of Fine Art from the San Francisco Art Institute, and a Masters of Fine Art from the University of North Texas. Most recently, Fielder was included in the New American Talent exhibition, a two-year traveling exhibition originating in Austin. For the second time, Fielder will be featured in the juried exhibition in print, New American Painting (West edition #80), published this fall. Other recent exhibitions include an artist residency at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, China, the Focus and Azalea SOCIO DESIGN FOUNDATIONTM 5

7 galleries in San Francisco, CA, the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland, the Commerce Street Artist's Warehouse, Houston, TX, and Anya Tish Gallery, Houston, TX. His art criticism has appeared in various art magazines such as Artforum.com, Art Lies, Glasstire, and Art Papers. 8 You-nian Lin honorable mention My English name is Jerry Yu-Nien Lin. I am from Taipei, Taiwan. Growing up I lived in many places that came to be home. My family was very busy, so we could not see each other very often. This is how I learned that the idea of a home is very important, but it was different for each person in my family. I am interested in architecture s impact on the people who interact with it. I learned this from working with my father, as we worked on our house and made repairs. Furthermore, from when I was little I enjoyed going to art exhibitions and musical events that inspire me aesthetically. Through studying architecture in college, my knowledge became more comprehensive. Now I am able to design with an understanding of the psychology and physicality of space. Presently, I am working on a master s degree at Tunghai University where I am cultivating a broader understanding of design and how it shapes experience. SOCIO DESIGN FOUNDATIONTM 7

Paul Chan and William Pyatt honorable mention Paul and Will are both third year (B.Arch) students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute s School of Architecture.

10 Paul Chan and William Pyatt honorable mention Paul and Will are both third year (B.Arch) students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute s School of Architecture. Both have expressed an early interest in procedural and computationally generated works that could not exist without leveraging the computer as a design tool. Thus far, Paul s work has focused on the generation of parametric procedural forms whereas Will has explored utilizing material behaviors as a means to inform formal properties. Their work was recently published in the Hyde at Rensselaer and featured in an exhibition at the Hyde Collection, in Glens Falls, New York. Special thanks to Ezio Blasetti. 11 Lee Dunfield, Megan Griffith, Michael Sundrup and Heather Wehby honorable mention Lee received his Bachelor of Science degree from Washington University in Saint Louis, his Masters of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati, and just recently fulfilled the requirements to become a registered architect in the state of Ohio. In his free time, Lee enjoys drawing and painting. He also enjoys traveling and keeping a sketchbook to document these excursions. His work has been displayed at various art exhibitions in the Cincinnati area and has received several commendations. Megan graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelors of Science in Architecture. While in college, she worked in straw bale construction and digital fabrication studios, kick-started a storm water awareness campaign on campus, and traveled to over 50 cities in 25 countries to see, touch, and taste cultures on four continents. Shortly after graduation in 2008, she began an internship at emersion SOCIO DESIGN FOUNDATIONTM 10

12 DESIGN in Cincinnati, Ohio to gain more technical and design experience in the architectural field. Still deciding what she "wants to do when she grows up," Megan's appetite for design is not yet sated. Michael received both his Bachelor of Science degree and his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati. Through the co-op program at UC he has been fortunate to work in a number of working environments, ranging from a high-end residential design firm in Naples, Florida to a large architectural-engineering firm in Shanghai, China that specialized in recreational facilities, hotels and commercial high-rises. Michael spent a summer as a team leader for the HABS/HAER historical documentation program at NASA s Marshall Space Flight Center. Prior to joining emersion DESIGN, Michael worked for Cincinnati s City Architect, focusing on streetscape design and urban planning. Michael enjoys all aspects of historic preservation and on weekends, he volunteers at the Cincinnati Museum Center, giving tours of the historic Union Terminal. Heather is a licensed Architect and LEED Accredited Professional with emersion DESIGN in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati and has focused her professional and volunteer work on issues of sustainability in the built environment. Her passion lies in cultivating a transformative design approach in which our developments and adaptations are in harmony with nature. SOCIO DESIGN FOUNDATIONTM 11

He enjoys working in all facets of design, including industrial, architectural and sound, and exploring their roles in shaping our society. Stephen recently graduated with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Pennsylvania State University. While at Penn State, he worked with the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) and the Baltimore Office of Sustainability on projects merging social and ecological systems in cities. Glos Associates Inc. is a multi-disciplinary architecture and engineering practice based in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The Glos team has recently launched a creative design initiative to encourage our team members to meet, discuss and collaborate to address broader issues in sustainability, community resilience and social architecture. We strive to respond to the needs of our community and to provide the most reliable architectural service in the region. Follow us on Aaron Ashley A graduate from St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology in Windsor, Ontario, Aaron has worked as a project manager and team lead at Glos Associates Inc. for the past ten years. Interested in urban development and sustainability, Aaron received his LEED AP designation in 2010 and has since integrated these strategies throughout his architectural work. Aaron is tech savvy, and very knowledgeable in building science, allowing him to pioneer the use of Building Information Modeling software at the firm since Jay McGuire Jay McGuire is a recent graduate of Lawrence Technological University s Master of Architecture program. Finishing his degree with a concentration on critical issues, Jay enjoys exploring the history and theory of architecture and its resulting phenomenological and sociological implications. 17 advanced by rigorous and diverse research, his resulting architectural work takes the form of designed environments, architectural installation, and writing. New to the team at Glos Associates Inc., Jay contributes to the production of construction documents for a wide range of projects. Kyle Revait Also a graduate from St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology in Windsor, Ontario, Kyle Revait has been part of the architectural team at Glos Associates Inc. for the past five years. Kyle has contributed to the design and development of a variety of building types, including multi-story residential buildings, churches, sport complexes, and industrial facilities. A strong community contributor, Kyle volunteers as a hockey coach for local youth in Windsor-Essex Region. Valerie Wright Valerie Wright is a graduate from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and has studied and practiced architecture throughout Ontario, Canada and in Rome, Italy. Passionate about sustainability, Valerie has received multiple awards and research grants for her studies in Sustainable Design and Community Resilience. Her love of bringing ideas from conception to realization extends from architectural design into fine arts, graphic design, pottery and culinary arts. 19 Thresholds of Self-Awareness December Steven Kok winning entry I am originally from Norfolk, England and I studied for both my Bachelor's of Arts and MArch degrees at the University of Liverpool. Graduating in 2011, my joint thesis project received the RIBA SOM Travelling Fellowship Award. I am currently working for an Architecture Practice in London and hoping to commence my Part III studies in September In the near future I aspire to establish my own design studio, in which both abstract theory based projects and projects that centre around the sensory experience of space can benefit from a carefully derived conceptual process to deliver outcomes that are considered, thought provoking but also pragmatic. 21 Luke Laverty honorable mention Luke is an Architectural Intern at Flad Architects in Madison, Wisconsin. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2009 and Master of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati in For his graduate thesis, he worked with the University s Department of Psychology to combine the fields of psychology and architecture through the exploration of Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi s concept of flow: the explorative study of the moment when one is so mentally absorbed with an activity that the boundary between environment and inhabitant becomes transparent. For further reading on Luke's thesis and flow, please visit Discomforted by blob-itecture s primary focus on ocularcentric form over its multi-sensory relation to those within, Luke aims to integrate environment and the minds of its inhabitants. He was most influenced in the aim for emotional effect during his internship with Peter Eisenman in 2010 while working SOCIO DESIGN FOUNDATIONTM 20

22 to design a form-restrained, emotionally-tolling intervention in an historic jail to house the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah.
