The original house has aluminum siding, vinyl 1/1-sash windows, a stone foundation, a hipped roof (asphalt shingle) with 3 gable-roofed dormers, a central brick chimney, a 1- story polygonal bay window on the south side, and a gable-roofed hood over the door. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION According to local historian Eugenia Bibb, this house was constructed ca by P. D. Glison. During the 1930s and early 1940s, the house was occupied by Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity and was later divided into 4 apartments. The wrap around porch was removed when the large 3 ½-story brick apartment building was built in the front yard in the year It is attached by a breezeway and could easily be removed in the future without destroying the historic dwelling. This resource is therefore considered a contributing resource in the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. 144

4 in gambrel ends, triple attic windows in front gable end; plain frieze board; fine central door with fanlights and sidelights with tracery, side projecting polygonal bay, projecting polygonal bay next to front door; wraparound 6-bay porch with Tuscan columns and plain pickets, and a rear wing. OUTBUILDINGS Cottage #1- pre-1920, cinder-block garage that was converted into residential use in the 1930s or 1940s. Details include 6/6-sash windows, shed-roofed hood with brackets over door, batten shutters, exterior-end flue, and asphalt shingle roof (northernmost of the two cottages). Cottage #2- pre-1920, frame (board-and-batten), gable-roofed (asphalt shingle) cottage with 6/6-sash windows. This building was greatly enlarged in the 1930s or 1940s and incorporated the original small outbuilding. (southernmost of the two cottages). HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION According to local historian Eugenia Bibb, this dwelling was probably constructed as a spec house by or for J. H. Hill of Irving-Way-Hill Funeral Home. Architecturally the house is a fine example of an intact Dutch Colonial Revival-style dwelling constructed of brick. It is now used as apartments as are the rear dependencies. The buildings are contributing resources in the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. 146

The house is actually oriented toward Valley Road, although the driveway comes in from Jefferson Park Ave. The house is 149
8 comprised of a 2-story, 2-bay, hip-roofed main block with a side 1 ½-story gable-roofed wing with a gable-roofed dormer. Details include deeply overhanging flared eaves with exposed rafter ends, two interior brick chimneys with corbeled caps, false half-timbering in the ½ story and the second story, a front door with 14-light sidelights, a round-arched hood above the door, a 6-course American bond foundation, 4x4 basement windows, 9/9 windows (some with louvered shutters), an integral corner porch, a 2-story projecting polygonal bay on the rear of the 1 ½-story wing, triple windows, and plain friezeboard, cornices and window surrounds. OUTBUILDINGS Garage: ca. 1915, 1 ½-story, hip-roofed (standing-seam metal), stuccoed garage with apartment above. Details include 6/6 windows, central brick flue, shed-roofed wall dormer, exposed rafter ends, and side entry with hood. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION One of the most prominent dwellings in the area, this house was constructed around 1915 for Henry and Francesca Boone after a design by local architect, Eugene Bradbury. It is one of three houses that Bradbury was thought to have designed in the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. Boone was a real estate and insurance broker who apparently built these as spec houses. Architecturally the house uses elements of the Tudor Revival style and is one of the largest and earliest houses in the potential district. The yard is very well landscaped and was designed by Orland E. White, who bought the property in 1928 and lived there until his death in White was a botany professor at the University and is also known for designing the Virginia State Arboretum (now named for him) at Blandy Experimental Farm (a Universityowned property) in Clarke County. 150

10 wings, one with a dormer and the other with an exterior-end stone chimney, give the house its current U-shaped footprint. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION According to local historian Eugenia Bibb, the original owner of this house was probably Frances Henderson. Mary L. Fishburne, widow of John W. Fishburne, bought the house in It was sold out of the Fishburne family in Architecturally the house is a good example of a vernacular Colonial Revival-style dwelling with elements of the Cottage style. It is from the same time period and form of many of the other contributing resources in the potential Oakhurst-Gildersleeve Neighborhood Historic District. 152
