2 photo: Naomi Schiphorst Suvarnabhumi Airport Vibhavadi Rangsit R 222 Moo Bangkok This is a masterpiece of interdisciplinary work between architects and engineers The goal to create a low energy need building with cutting edge if state-of-the-art technology required a very strict and close cooperation A large roof trellis structure placed over the complex of functionally separate buildings unifies the site and provides an overriding consistent architectural image Sized to accommodate future growth, the trellis provides an important functional advantage as well as an architectural one With louvres positioned to shade the structures from direct sunlight, mechanical loads are reduced The roof structure, of 567m by 210m in plan, is comprised of 8 supertruss girders These have a central span of 126m and 2 cantilevering ends, which both have a length of 42m The entire roof is supported by 16 frame-type steel columns Creating the architectural form by its function, the geometry of the supertruss girder was determined through the level of the bending moment Project is public! Technical engineer Murphy-Jahn ACT Consultants New Bangkok International Airport MI_MOA The new airport, is located near 15 km on the eastbound Bang Na-Trat Highway in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan province and is about 25 kilometres from downtown Bangkok, there are five access routes to the new airport with a total of 26 traffic lanes 2

3 Elephant Tower Phahonyothin Road Bangkok An elephantine landmark in the Chatuchak district, the Elephant Tower is one of the most unique buildings in Bangkok The three towers make up a shape of 's national animal- noting the importance of Elephants in 's history - which can be seen even from the Expressway On the right edge of the building you can also see an eye and tusk The building is used as a condominium, office space, and also houses a language school The Elephant building is not the most beautiful of buildings - in fact it has received votes in a competition to pinpoint the world's most ugly building! 4 The Robot Building South Sathorn Road Bangkok This building was designed in 1985 by Sumet Jumsai, one of 's best-loved architects, also famous for the Bangkok's Elephant Building A contemporary of Buckminster Fuller he took inspiration from his son's toy robot and let it loose on a design for the Bank of Asia (now United Overseas Bank) headquarters A sign of the times, this cheery robot signifies the friendly face of technology For all that it looks like an elaborate joke, every robotic aspect is well-planned and well-used His eyes are the dining and meeting rooms of the executive suites, his eyelids are sunshades, his antennae are lightning rods His nuts were the biggest in the world at time of development Planning regulations give him his stepped-back sides and the blue curtain walls representing the colour of the Bank of provide much-needed shade If that wasn't enough, the robot's eyes were designed to wink at night along to music called "The Robot Symphony" by Jacques Bekaert Project is not public! 6 Empire Tower South Sathorn Road Bangkok Empire Tower, the largest office tower in Bangkok is located in the heart of the central business district This building has shaped Bangkok's skyline with its multi-layered towers The 58- storey complex has also set a new benchmark for office tower with its comprehensive facilities and amenities The building is crafted with comprehensive facilities to make a perfect working environment with 52 high- speed lifts, 2,500 parking spaces and large food centre accommodating peak hour diners Ultra-modern technology via fibre optic backbone ensures uninterrupted data transmission and communications Project is not public! 7 photo: Mike Verhey The Met South Sathorn Road Bangkok The design of the 66-storey tower is an innovative solution to the issues of density in tropical Asian cities, and offers a new model for high-density tropical housing The Met explores how aspects of low-rise tropical housing can be adapted to provide vast amenities through indoor-outdoor spaces in the sky The high rise tower proposes gardens and swimming pools in the sky in six perforated towers that allow light and air to penetrate the slender forms The retail block floats in a lotus pond and participates in the life of the city through showcase pods that punctuate the façade The condominium houses 370 units, ranging from 2 bedrooms to 4 bedrooms and luxury penthouses The property provides a full range of luxury facilities, including separate drop-off areas and lobbies, large landscaped garden, a 50-meter swimming pool, fitness centre, satellite gym, sky terrace, library, BBQ area, and 2 tennis courts Project is not public! 2009 Main designer, WOHA Designs Tandem s The Met 7

8 Bangkok Art and Culture Center Thanon Rama I Bangkok The building is modern but at the same time based on unique Thai shapes The most interesting point of this architecture is however not the outside but the inside The architect designed the open space penetrating from the basement through the highest floor connecting most of all functions in the building The exhibition spaces are both in the separated room and at the ramp corridor from 6th to top floor All the patterns are based on the circular form either fully circle or its segment They use curved lines in all areas of the building including corridor, stair landing, ceiling pattern, floor finishing pattern and the void Project is public! 9 The River Charoen Nakorn 13 Bangkok These two towers have been carefully sculpted, breaking down the massing into a series of cascading volumes of varying heights and articulation: the interplay of the restrained elegance of the curved glass facades is contrasted by the deep articulation of the straight elevations; bold wall elements help to delineate the different forms, lending the towers their vertical expression; the taller tower culminating in a dramatic, free-standing glass curtain, translucent by day and lit up at night The towers create a new iconic landmark on the Bangkok skyline Floor area/size m² Associate architect Raimon Land Steven Leach Raimon Land Skytrain to Taksin BTS or Busboat 9
