1 (Revised in March 2014) Introduction In order to achieve the educational goals of, residential halls were established to provide students with a decent learning, research and living environment, where they can enjoy a balanced development. Through liv ing with othe rs, they learn how to communicate and become independent and self-disciplined. (A) Resident Selection Criteria 1. Special quotas, home district, type of residence and extra-curricular activities are the four basic criteria for resident selection. 2. The aforementioned criteria are set in Appendix 1, 2, 3 and 4. Details are as follows: Appendix 1 Special Quotas Appendix 2 Home District Highest score: 40 Appendix 3 Type of Residence Highest score: 35 Appendix 4 Extra-curricular Activities Highest score (a) Offenders of S tudent Hostel Regulations will have scores de ducted in their hostel application for the next academic year. Deduction by the Committee on Student Hostels ranges from 1 to 20 points according to different circumstances. (b) Residents who breach the rules for receiving overnight-guests will be penalized as follows: 1 st breach of rules: 8 points deducted 2 nd breach of rules: 20 points deducted 3 rd breach of rules: Disqualified for hostel application in the next academic year (B) Potential Residents 1. Guaranteed One-year Residence Scheme All final-year undergraduates from, who have no t been previously allocated student residence in the College (except Summer Hostel), can apply for the Guaranteed One-year Residence Scheme. Priorities are given to the aforementioned undergraduates and there are each 100 vacancies for male and female students. Places are distributed by a computer lottery system. (Undergraduates from Faculty of Medicine can apply for the scheme from Year 3 onwards.) 2. Residences for freshmen are allocated according to the following formula: A x C/B x 1.1 A- Total number of vacancies (excluding those reserved fo r non-local undergraduates and exchange students) B- Total number of local students from C- Total number of local freshmen 3. After allocating residences to freshmen, the remaining vacancies will be distributed among existing local and non-local undergraduates and exchange students.
2 Appendix 1 Criteria for Special Quotas A. The following applicants can enjoy priorities in hostel allocation for one academic year: 1. Whose homes are on the outlying islands in Hong Kong or outside Hong Kong (except Tung Chung) 2. Orphans or those who do not have families and are not taken care of 3. Those who are mobility-handicapped out of physical challenges or recommended by the University Health Centre out of other reasons 4. (i) President and (the two) Vice Presidents of N ew Asia College Student Union and President of Student Union-Representative Council. (ii) President or Vice President of Student Union, CUHK or Managing Editor or Deputy Managing Editor of CU Student Press, who is from (iii) Director or Deputy Director of Campus Radio of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who is from. 5. President of Hall Associations in B. The following applicants can enjoy priorities in hostel allocation: 1. Eight vacancies are reserved for Student Union to nominate its committee members/vice President of Representative Council for residence. Period of residence basically lasts until successors take office. 2. Five vacancies are reserved for Student Union, CUHK, CU Student Press a nd Campus Radio of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to nominate its co mmittee members or editors for residence. Period of residence basically lasts until successors take office. 3. Each Student Hostel reserves no more than eight vacancies for students with special needs. Warden nominations for such vacancies will be submitted to the Committee on Student Hostels for considerations. 4. Each Warden can make nominations of no more than 10 percent of the total number of residents in the concerning hostel. The Committee on Student Hostels will give considerations to those w ho meet basic hostel selection criteria and have outstanding performances and contributions to hostel lives and activities.

6 Appendix 4 Criteria for Extra-Curricular Activities Criteria for Extra-Curricular Activities consist of two parts with a highest score of 25 in total. (A) General activities A maximum of two events or positions can be registered with full scores for the first one and halved scores for the second one. Tenure should span over September, Should a department or organization is only under and its Society has registered with both the College and CUHK, committee members can only register such positions once. Orientation Camp Small Group Leader 2 Happy Run Athletes 1 Athletic Meet Athletes 1 Swimming Gala Athletes (1 event) Swimming Gala Athletes (2 events or above) 1 2 Organisations which ar e neither registered with Student Union, CUHK nor Student Union and wish to submit their past records and house program to the Dean of Students Office for considerations for selection points should do so every year. The Office will verify such documents according to the nature and performances of their act ivities and sent them to the Examination Unit. (C) To encourage communication and foster m utual understanding between local and non-local undergraduates, and to help the non-local freshmen to adapt to the life in Hong Kong, all local undergraduates can apply for having a non-local undergraduate as room-mate. Applicants who have paired up with non-local undergraduates will receive 3 hostel admission points for one-year residence, and 1 point for one-te rm residence. The points will be counted in applicants hostel admission in the following academic year (e.g. to pair up with a non-local undergraduate in 20 13/14 academic year, and be eligible for claiming admission points in 2014/15). Should applications exceed number of non-local freshmen assigned to t he College, applicants will be selected on a random basis. All successful applicants are not allowed to change their room-mates without reasons as accepted by the College.
