1 15 ANNUAL REPORT OCTOBER 16 Manufactured Building Conditions The Canadian Manufactured Housing Institute (CMHI) conducts a survey of producers of factorybuilt homes called the CMHI Manufactured Building Survey. Altus Group Consulting analyses the data produced from the CMHI Survey and provides information as to the evolving position of manufactured buildings within the Canadian construction sector. Highlights from 15: In 15, the value of manufactured building production in Canada (residential and nonresidential combined) was over $1.6 billion, down about 9% from a very strong 14 Factorybuilt units accounted for about 15.6% of all singlefamily homes started in 15, a slight increase over 14 Some 15,734 factorybuilt singlefamily homes were started in 15, down about 6% from a revised 16,8 units in 14; overall singlefamily starts (both factory and sitebuilt) decreased by 9% Manufactured building activity helps support over 5,5 fulltime equivalent jobs across the country and generates some $588 million annually in federal and provincial taxes bec and erta have the largest number of jobs supported by the manufactured building industry 1,8 1,6 1,4 1, % % 15% 1% 5% % 5% 1% 15% 18, 16, 14, 1 1, 8, 6, 4, 18.% 16.% 14.% 1.% 1.% 8.% 6.% 4.%.% % %
2 NATIONAL INDUSTRY INDICATORS Construction Industry Residential construction investment (a number inclusive of new housing construction, renovation investment and acquisitions costs) advanced 3% in 15. Conversely, total construction spending declined 4% (after inflation) from the previous year. This is disappointing after a steady increase in spending for the past 5 years. Continued contractions in energysector investments are driving total construction spending (5.) (1.) (15.) Construction Investment* Residential (including renovations) Exports of Manufactured Buildings Canada s international trade in manufactured buildings was more balanced in 15 compared to recent years. The prairies (erta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan) accounted for about twothirds of imports, while ario and both showed strong exports, equilibrating the trade for manufactured buildings Exports Imports antic bec ario erta Housing Industry Overview Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) publishes data on housing starts (including both sitebuilt and factorybuilt homes). Overall, housing starts in Canada increased very modestly to 195,535 units in 15 up about 3.8% from the previous year.
