Histori Note The lands of Petarlingis formed part of the Barony of Abernethy in 1312. The lands passed into the ownership of the Leslie family, Earls of Rothes, through marriage. Sir Alexander Leslie was a supporter of Robert the Brue, but later espoused the ause of Edward I and ommanded the glish garrison at Dundee. The tower at the ore of Pitairlie House dates from the 14th entury, although there may have been an earlier building on the site. The tower was probably built around 1350 by Patrik Leslie, first Lord Lindores.. The strength of the ground floor vaulting and the thikness of the walls, together with the position of the house, on an elevated ridge proteted by the loh and by the burn and glen to form a moat, suggest it was reated in a defensive role.
The property remained in Leslie hands until the death of the 2nd Lord of Lindores in 1649, whih left the estate in finanial disarray. This led to the Court of Session granting Pitairlie to a reditor, John Bayne, in 1667, ending 355 years of ownership by the Leslie family. In the 18th entury, Pitairlie was aquired by Colonel James Cathart of Carbiston, and around 1730 the house underwent a major programme of onstrution, reating a lassially early Georgian ountry residene. The family retained the estate until the mid 1960s and had strong onnetions with the Royal and Anient Golf Club in St Andrews - hene the Cathart Bunker on the Old Course.
