3 photo: Roderick Trompert photo: Roderick Trompert Getty Center Getty Center Drive 1200 Los Angeles California The Getty Center straddles two hillside ridges in the Santa Monica mountains like a modernist Acropolis This campus of buildings is more than just a museum; it is also a concert hall, an office complex, a research centre and a library The museum is composed of five galleries arranged around a long courtyard fountain The skin of all of the buildings is composed of 30-inch square panels, made of aluminium painted white, Meier's signature Even the Italian travertine stonework follows this 30-inch grid pattern The use of white in Meier's projects allows him to skilfully manipulate the natural light, reflecting the colours of the building's environment The buildings are the most beautiful in the late afternoon/dusk when the golden light washes across the travertine and the sun sets across the Pacific Ocean photo: Roderick Trompert Floor area/size m² Client Richard Meier Robert Irwin J Paul Getty Trust Tuesday, thursday and sunday / Friday and saturday From the 405 freeway, exit at Getty Center Drive Signs will direct you to a parking garage where you can board a tram that takes you 15 miles up the hill to the museum complex Entrance to the museum is free, but parking costs $8 3

4 photo: Raban Haaijk photo: Raban Haaijk Diamond Ranch High School Diamond Ranch Dr 100 Diamond Bar California Pomona Constructed on a steeply sloping site, this collection of buildings has been described as a "building of topography" by Thom Mayne, principal architect for Mophosis "It was our intention to create a building which is previewed as one with the site, rather than on top of the site" The main axis of travel rises from the parking lot with a grand staircase and cuts through the campus like canyon, echoing the surrounding hillsides as well as the seismic nature of the Los Angeles area Floor area/size m² Client Morphosis Pomona Unified School District The project is open to wander around in at any time except when the school is in session, which is typically from 8am-4pm Monday to Friday From the 60 freeway, exit at Phillips Ranch Road and head south Turn right at Diamond Ranch Drive and it will take you into the parking lot 4

5 photo: Andrew Larsen photo: Andrew Pisarek Experience Music Project 5th Avenue North 325 Seattle Washington The Experience Music Project in Seattle is a museum dedicated to the exploration of creativity and innovation in popular music The museum contains mostly rock memorabilia and technology-intensive multimedia displays, but is not limited to that It was founded by Paul Allen of Microsoft fame, and it is located in the Seattle city centre, near the Space Needle The building was designed by Frank Gehry, bearing a lot of similarities to his other works Its sheet metal construction resembles Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles Much of the building material is exposed in the building's interior Reminding many of a smashed guitar, Gehry himself stated: "We started collecting pictures of Stratocasters, bringing in guitar bodies, drawing on those shapes in developing our ideas" The architecture was greeted by Seattle residents with a mixture of acclaim for Gehry and derision for this particular edifice, some calling it a 'blob' and others 'the hemmorhoids' Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Client Gehry Partners Hoffman Construction Company Paul Allen Robin 10:00-17:00 daily The building is served by the Seattle Monorail, which connects it to Westlake center The monorail runs through the building There are also many bus lines going to the Seattle Center If you are going by car, you will find many lots and ample street parking surrounding EMP and the Seattle Center campus The largest lot in close proximity to EMP is located at 5th Avenue North and Harrison Street 5

6 Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels West Temple Street 555 Los Angeles California After a 1996 earthquake ruined St Vibiana's cathedral, Rafael Moneo was asked to design a new church which is located a few blocks away from the original structure The main point of interest in this building is that the entrance is adjacent to the alter, a reversed plan compared to most cathedrals Entering from the street and traveling up the steps to the main plaza, the visitor enters the cathedral through two huge bronze doors A large ambulatory runs down the side of the church, giving the visitor glimpses of the large nave as they pass by a number of small chapels Reaching the rear of the church, one then enters a large austere space, almost devoid of decoration Another unique feature is the lack of stained glass The cathedral is instead lit by thin alabaster stone diffusing the sunlight into a very white light, illuminating most of the spaces photo: Roderick Trompert Floor area/size m² Rafael Moneo Monday - Friday 06:30-18:00 / Saturday 09:00-18:00 / Sunday 07:00-18:00 If you are taking the 101 South: take the 101 Hollywood Freeway South to downtown Exit on Broadway and make two right turns; Broadway, then Temple After crossing Hill Street, turn right from Temple Street into the parking garage If you are taking the Harbor Freeway, 110 South: exit at Hill Street After you cross the 101 Freeway, the entrance to the parking structure will be located on your right 6

7 Samitaur Building S La Cienega Boulevard 3457 Culver City California This project, housing a division headquarters for the Kodak Company, was the first project built in Central Los Angeles after the 1992 riots It consists of a raised building on columns that ties together three existing buildings into a type of campus This vertical separation provides a measure of security, as well as a shaded gathering space for the employees At a few points along the very linear façade, the architecture almost spontaneously transforms into sculpture, creating outdoor courtyards Of these outdoor sculptures, the south end is accessible to the public by using the stairs Floor area/size m² Eric Owen Moss There is no gate, so the compound is always accessible From Freeway 10, exit at La Cienega Boulevard and head south Make a right onto Jefferson Boulevard and turn left at the first driveway, about 500 feet down the street Drive around the buildings (towards the rear) for parking space 7

8 Prada Beverly Hills N Rodeo Drive 343 Beverly Hills California The design for this Prada store is unique among the shops of Rodeo Drive in that it does not have the traditional storefront enclosure of glass and mannequins Instead, the entire wall facing the street drops into the basement to give maximum entry, most of which is a grand staircase ascending to the second floor A curtain of air at the entry keeps the air temperature at a reasonable level The inner walls of the second level are lined with porous green resin devloped specifically for the store About 4 inches thick, this wall was constructed by pouring resin into panels filled with wax balls After the resin had dried, the wax was melted away to create the porous look The store also boasts some technological innovations such as cameras and an LCD screen in the changing rooms, allowing the customer to see themselves from all angles Floor area/size m² Client OMA - Rem Koolhaas Prada Monday - saturday / Sunday From the 405 Freeway, exit at Santa Monica Boulevard and head east Turn right onto Rodeo drive There is some street parking and there are plenty of parking garages 8

9 Gehry House 22nd Street 1002 Santa Monica California Normally, one doesn't expect a Deconstructivist iconic building nestled in a quiet, suburban setting, but that is the house that Frank Gehry built in Santa Monica The original two-storey "dumb little house with charm," as Mr Gehry famously called it, can still be seen behind his renovation While his later experiments in architecture tended toward extravagantly curved titanium skins, in his earlier works everyday materials and techniques such as corrugated metal, chain-link fence and exposed structure were used In some examples, he wraps the entire building with these materials, completely encapsulating them However, in doing so, he also frees the building to do much more than it originally could A renovation in 1993 softened some of the original experimentation, but the original ideas can still be seen in this unique house Project is not public! 1978 Gehry Partners From the 10 Freeway, take the Cloverfield exit and turn right At Santa Monica Boulevard, turn left and take the first right onto 23rd Street At Washington Avenue, turn left and the house will be one block down on the left 9

10 The Umbrella Hayden Avenue 3535 Culver City California The Umbrella in Culver City, Los Angeles was originally designed as an outdoor performance balcony for a series of experimental concerts put on by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, called 'The Green Umbrella' With the Disney Concert Hall bringing all Philharmonic activity to downtown, the Umbrella became an office building for an internet company This project is one of Eric Owen Moss' first experiments in the use of laminated glass, something he continued to explore in later projects Floor area/size m² Eric Owen Moss There is a security guard present at the entrance to the parking lot, but since recently people are allowed to wander through the collection of Moss buildings From downtown Los Angeles, take the 10 Freeway west and exit at Robertson Boulevard Turn left onto National Boulevard and continue for about a mile, turning right onto Hayden Avenue 10

11 Broad Contemporary Art Museum Wilshire Boulevard 5905 Los Angeles California The LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) has the latest addition to the Los Angeles art scene Over the past 40 years, it had become a sprawling mess with buildings scattered without connection over a few city blocks After initially choosing Rem Koolhaas to bring the complex of buildings together, the museum board quickly changed their mind and selected Renzo Piano in 2002, who offered a more plausible design The only new building, this Broad Contemporary Art Museum, features the skylit galleries and rooftop louvres Piano has become known for in his museums He also connected the remaining buildings with a glass entrance pavilion The exterior design is simple and clean; evoking qualities of both the Getty Center, 10 miles to the west, as well as the Case Study program from the 1940's and 1950's Floor area/size m² Renzo Piano Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays: / Saturdays & Sundays: From the 10 Freeway, exit at La Brea Boulevard and head north Turn left onto Wilshire Boulevard; the building will be a few blocks down on your right 11

12 photo: Roderick Trompert Eames House N Chautauqua Blvd 203 Pacific Palisades California Also known as Case Study House #8, the Eames House was one of 25 homes built as part of The Case Study House Program The program sought to explore the methods of designing and building inexpensive and efficient model homes using techniques and materials derived from the production lines following World War II The Eames house served as both their home and their studio nestled into a wooded bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean The Mondrianesque panel facade is composed of cheap steel and glass parts that could be found in a catalog Of the twenty-five Case Study Houses built, the Eames house is considered the most successful both as an architectural statement and as a comfortable, functional living space photo: Roderick Trompert Charles and Ray Eames Monday through Friday: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Call ahead to schedule an appointment 48 hours in advance Take the 10 freeway west until it becomes the Pacific Coast Highway At Chautauqua Boulevard, turn right and go up the hill On your left you will see a private driveway marked 203/205 Go past the driveway and you will see a street named Corona Del Mar Make a left Park on Corona Del Mar and walk down to the driveway mar 12

13 Colorado Court Colorado Avenue 502 Santa Monica California The Colorado Court project is the first affordable housing project in the to achieve a LEED gold rating as well as the first to be 100% energy neutral It features a natural gas powered turbine/heat recovery system that generates the base electrical load and hot water demands for the building and a solar electric panel system integrated into the façade and roof of the building, which supplies most of the peak load electricity demand If the panels generate more electricity than needed, the excess is fed back into the utility grid Project is not public! 14 photo: Parker Anderson photo: Parker Anderson Peter B Lewis Building Euclid Avenue Cleveland Ohio The Peter B Lewis Building is home to Case Western University's Weatherhead School of Management The exterior is an interesting collision of brick and the curving stainless steel forms he made famous in Bilbao and Los Angeles In fact, it was Gehry's unbuilt design for Mr Lewis' house, that is credited with some of the design choices he later explored in at the Guggenheim The interior of the building is one the more successful aspects of it The smooth curves of the wall draw the visitor, and Gehry's excellent mastery of light is revealed here as the natural light that penetrates the space shifts colors throughout the day He also makes good use of natural materials, namely wood, to warm up the classroom spaces photo: Parker Anderson Floor area/size m² Gehry Partners Tours are available on the weekends from 1pm to 3:30pm Though its mail address says it is located on Euclid Avenue, the building is actually located just off Euclid on the intersection of Ford Drive and Bellflower Road 14

15 Green on 19 19th Street 1035 Santa Monica California Green on 19 is the name given to a collection of five town homes on 19th Street in Santa Monica Integrated seamlessly into a neighbourhood with more traditional architecture, Green on 19 brings a very modern touch that embodies a sustainable lifestyle By making good use of a split plane design, the architect allows the natural light to permeate throughout the spaces, creating a warmth that is uncommon in Modernist designs The detailing -down to the smallest reveal- has been done well throughout, adding to the richness of the space Sustainable wood and bamboo is used for flooring and cabinetry All urban runoff is captured and channeled for the landscaping, and solar panels are used as design elements, providing shade for the rooftop balconies Jesse Bornstein ure Saturday & Sunday: From the 10 freeway, exit Cloverfield Blvd and turn right Turn Left at Santa Monica Blvd, and then right onto 20th street At California Ave, make a left, and then a right at 19th It will be a few houses down on your right 15

16 photo: Roderick Trompert High School No 9 for the Visual and Performing Arts N Grand Ave 450 Los Angeles California High School #9 is the latest addition to the LA Unified School District's investment in forward thinking architecture Located on the edge of the 'canyon' created by the 101 freeway, it sits directly opposite of the Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles The school campus will include four academies for education in music, dance, theater arts and visual arts, and a theatre which will be open to the public The theatre lobby that forms the public entrance to the theatre, symbolically emphazises the openness of the school to the public and simultaneously serves as an exhibition space which can be linked to the visual arts studios and the event space on top of the tower A truncated cone, placed at the centre of the site, serves as an oculus to the library below A grand stair case wrapping around the cone creates a large public space that still affords some privacy in the busyness of downtown Project is not public! 17 Alexander Science Center School South Figueroa St 3737 Los Angeles California nterschool/sciencecenterschoolphp Operated as a joint venture between the California Science Center and the LAUSD, the Alexander Science Center School has the distinct privilege of being sited between world class science museums, and University of Southern California (USC) The school features an integrated curriculum emphasizing science, mathematics and the use of technology, and this is reflected in the architecture The planted roof on the north building reduces heat load thereby reducing demand on the mechanical systems The siting of the building below the established grade and with the protection of a large planted berm on Exposition Blvd protects the lower level of the structure from intense sun exposure Floor area/size m² Morphosis 17

18 Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics E California Ave 1216 Pasadena California For almost 100 years, Caltech has been at the forefront of astronomy and astrophysics, pioneering research that has led to greater understanding of the earth, the solar system, and the universe The new Cahill Center is designed encourage interaction between its users It is to be composed of five floors, two of them underground The building will contain space for offices, laboratories, remote observing rooms, conference rooms, a library, an auditorium, and classrooms The skin appears fractured, as if struck by an earthquake Large panels, appear to slide apart from adjacent panels, revealing the building behind This look, however, is a sophisticated design meant to cool the building by allowing air to filter into the skin It is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification once it is completed in spring in 2009 Project is not public! 19 3555 Building Hayden Ave 3555 Culver City California Moss' exploration of form and materials continues here with his latest building, a television studio in the Hayden Tract Once a brick warehouse, the new design seems to rest upon the roof of the old building The primary zoning constraint for the project was limited to a 13m height limit The form of the roof of the project was manipulated to comply with an average height overall but distribute volume where needed The complex roof geometry necessitated large glue-laminated beams to achieve the curving form The wood structure is exposed on the interior and thus the skin is constructed as an insulated package This skin is a sandwich construction of plywood shear diaphragm on the interior, cement board fire retardant sheathing on the exterior and rigid insulation between Lastly, the waterproofing is an innovative spray-applied fiberglass material - specially developed for this project - that conforms to the curved roof and offers a unique aesthetic with its glassy translucency Project is not public! 20 Step Up on Fifth Fifth Street 1548 Santa Monica California Step Up on 5th is a continuation of the Step Up on 2nd project, also located in Santa Monica The new building provides a home, support services and rehabilitation for the homeless and mentally disabled population The new structure provides 46 studio apartments of permanent affordable housing The project also includes ground level commercial/retail space and subterranean parking A striking yet light-hearted exterior makes the new building a welcome landmark in downtown Santa Monica Custom water jet-anodized aluminum panels on the main façade create a dramatic screen that sparkles in the sun and glows at night, while also acting as sun protection and privacy screens The material reappears as a strategic arrangement of screens on the east and south-facing walls, lending a subtle rhythm to the exterior circulation walkways and stairs Project is not public! 21 Pacific Design Center Melrose Ave 8687 West Hollywood California The Pacific Design Center is a massive multi-use facility for the design community located in West Hollywood, California It was actually completed in multiple stages The largest building, officially known as Center Blue but often described as the Blue Whale, was completed in 1975 Center Green, a later addition in 1988, was also done by Cesar Pelli The PDC houses the West Coast's top decorating and furniture market, with showrooms, public and private spaces, a branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and two restaurants operated by chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck The Center has 130 showrooms which display and sell 2100 interior product lines to professional interior designers, architects, facility managers, decorators and dealers A new building, Center Red, is scheduled to be completed in 2011 (text from Wikipedia) Floor area/size m² Pelli Clarke Pelli s Monday -Friday:

24 Watts Towers East 107th St 1765 Los Angeles California The Watts Towers is proclaimed to be the largest art piece ever constructed by one person Built by a man with no formal training, Rodia's unique towers are the ultimate 'backyard' project When asked why he was constructing them, the Italian immigrant simply replied, "I wanted to do something big and I did it" The towers were created out of wire mesh, bound together by metal coat hangers A special concrete mix was applied by hand and various artifacts were then pressed into it The artifacts ranged from pieces of broken tile, seashells, coloured glass bottles, plates, and rocks Owing to Rodia's respect for the great Italian explorers, it is often said that the form of the complex is patterned after a large sailing ship The tallest tower tops out at 99' feet, just below the 100' regulation height In 1955, perhaps after falling one too many times, Simon Rodia abruptly left LA, never to return 1955 Artist Simon Rodia Friday - Sunday: The towers are accessible by both the Wilmington exit of the 105 freeway, as well as by train at the 103rd Street Station off of the Blue Line 24

25 photo: Susan Campbell La Miniatura Prospect Crescent 645 Pasadena California Also known as the Millard House, La Miniatura is the first of four concrete textile block houses built by Frank Lloyd Wright, all within the Los Angeles area It is a small, delicate two-storey structure, with pools and a lush ravine, evoking a sense of Mayan ruins The thin concrete blocks are held together with steel reinforcing rods running horizontally and vertically, 'knitting' the whole together A double wythe was common, held together by steel cross ties, the cavity air space serving as insulation Frank Lloyd Wright: "I would rather have built this little house than St Peter's in Rome" Project is not public! 1923 Frank Lloyd Wright 25

31 photo: Julius Shulman Stahl House Woods Drive 1635 Los Angeles California The Case Study House Program produced some of the most iconic architectural projects of the 20th Century, but none more iconic than or as famous as the Stahl House, also known as Case Study House #22 by Pierre Koenig The modern residence overlooks Los Angeles from the Hollywood Hills It was completed in 1959 for Buck Stahl and his family Buck Stahl had envisioned a modernist glass and steel constructed house that offered panoramic views of Los Angeles when he originally purchased the land for the house in 1954 for $13,500 Stahl had originally begun to excavate and take on the duties of architect and contractor; it was not until 1957 when Stahl hired Pierre Koenig to take over the design of the family's residence The two-bedroom, 2,200 square foot residence is a true testament to modernist architecture and the Case Study House Program The program was set in place by John Entenza and sponsored by the Arts & ure magazine photo: Julius Shulman 1959 Pierre Koenig missvickey reservation is needed 31
