3 RACI South Australian Branch Gala Centenary Dinner Welcome from the Branch President On behalf of the South Australian Branch Committee I welcome you tonight to celebrate the 100 th year of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. For a number of years our History and Archives group has been looking at documenting chemistry in SA and the 100 th anniversary is an ideal opportunity to showcase their efforts. Tonight premieres an enlightening audio visual presentation on the history of chemistry in South Australia. We are also very fortunate to have Professor Ian Rae as the after dinner guest speaker. He is currently an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and has contributed for over 30 years to the monthly RACI magazine, Chemistry in Australia. The attendees at this event span the full spectrum of members. We are joined by a number of past SA branch presidents and at least two former National presidents. We have 50+ year Life members, who have seen half of the RACI history and enthusiastic young student members who are the future of the RACI. With new initiatives like the Young Chemists Groups the RACI is trying to be relevant for today and the future. It is hopeful to think that in another 50 or even 100 years members will be looking back at the day we celebrated the first century. I would like to thank the sponsors of this event, especially our Gold Sponsors FB Rice, and Silver Sponsors AWRI, for their support, which has helped greatly to make this gala event a night to remember. Tonight s event has been the result of a great amount of work from the committee, especially John Mason and his superb preparation of the history of the SA branch and the audio visual presentation. Lastly, I encourage you to enjoy the evening, reunite with old friends and make new connections as the RACI SA branch embarks on another 100 years. 4 History of the RACI in South Australia Chemistry has featured in the history of our state. From a humble start with essential needs like beer and wine making, and food processing, we have delivered when increasing population has demanded better goods, services and living conditions. We now have a mature science that attracts, trains and supports its practitioners. Our local RACI SA Branch has been a driving presence in this history for a century, and tonight we hope to share some of that contribution with you.

5 The images scattered around these pages are just a sample of those we have used to build a simple video display to show the development of chemistry and chemists locally. We will intrude in your celebrations of our centenary this evening with a glimpse of that video and, maybe, a trip down memory lane. We feel that we have come a long way in what we hope will be a longer journey. 8 RACI South Australian Branch Gala Centenary Dinner After Dinner Speaker Professor Ian Rae University of Melbourne Ian Rae is an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne. He graduated with a PhD from the Australian National University and has spent many years undertaking university research and industry consulting. He was previously the Dean of Science at Monash University and is a former President of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Since leaving the laboratory Ian has served as an adviser to government agencies in Australia and to the United Nations Environment Program. He writes about the history of chemistry, chemical technology, and chemists and is co editor of the Australian Academy of Science journal Historical Records of Australian Science. He is probably well known to RACI members as a regular contributing columnist for Chemistry in Australia. After Dinner Speech Clean Skins Hitler drove many clever people out of Germany. Luckily, some of them came to Australia. Ian will tell the story of a dermatologist, his son and the son s wife, and their son and his wife. Yes, a true family saga that started in the 1930s and continues today. And it s not about wine. But it is about clever chemistry, clever marketing and the warm glow of success. Gesundheit!
