2 Charles Pachter I spent many childhood summers on Lake Simcoe, and as an adult came to re-discover co age country. In 2003 I renovated a former ice storage depot at the water's edge into a summer studio, a few kilometers south of Orillia. As the years passed I enjoyed exploring Orillia, its history, and architecture. In the process I got to know and admire many crea ve colleagues - ar sts, musicians, and writers - who have made this town in the heart of lake land their home. As a real estate junkie who spent years renova ng old buildings in the Queen Street West area of downtown Toronto in the 1970s and 1980s, I began checking out a few abandoned buildings for sale in downtown Orillia. They were inexpensive compared to Toronto. Eventually I took the plunge and bought an old warehouse in the heart of town a few metres from the Goodwill store. I named the building MOFO, for Moose Factory of Orillia! A er 50 years of crea ng art, I had run out of studio space in Toronto. This seemed like the ideal solu on: a town I liked, a convenient 90 minute drive from the big city, a space that could be repurposed, a place to work on big projects in a peaceful se ng away from traffic and pollu on. It is now my pleasure to auc on off many of my art works tonight to help OMAH grow and thrive, and to help make Orillia into a future visual arts des na on worth considering seriously. 13 Charles Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian, and lecturer. His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. He is represented in public and private collec ons throughout Canada, and interna onally. He has held solo exhibi ons in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, India, and Bangladesh. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier of France s Order of Arts and Le ers, a member of the Order of Ontario, and holds honorary doctorates from Brock University, OCAD University, the University of Toronto and is a recipient of the Queen s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. His images of the queen, moose, and maple leaf flag are icons of Canadian contemporary art. Pacher's steel and granite moose sculptures have been installed across Canada. McClelland & Stewart publica ons include an illustrated book on his life and work. Mr. Pachter lives and works in downtown Toronto in his award-winning home, studio and Moose Factory gallery designed by Canadian architect Stephen Teeple. His works are also displayed in MOFO (Moose Factory of Orillia) which he renovated in the heart of the historic home town of Stephen Leacock, Elizabeth Wyn Wood, Franklin Carmichael, and Gordon Ligh oot. His pain ngs are in the Portrait Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, Canada House in London, the Parliament Buildings, the Prime Minister s residence, and the Embassy of France in O awa. His solo exhibi on on The Loyalist Legacy and the Crea on of Modern English Canada was installed in the Charterhouse in London, Aug-Sept 2016, and a retrospec ve, Quintessen al Canadian, was held at the Bangladesh Na onal Museum in Dhaka, Feb His best selling children s books, M is for Moose, Canada Counts, and The Illustrated Journals of Susanna Moodie, his celebrated collabora on with poet Margaret Atwood, are published by Cormorant Books, Toronto. 14 In 1999, a remarkable marriage took place in Orillia, one that created a unique local en ty that has provided con nued inspira on through the ensuing years for those dedicated to the arts, culture, and home-grown history. That was the year, the Orillia Historical Society and the Sir Sam Steele Art Gallery Founda on merged. The Sir Samuel Steele Memorial Building, the home of OMAH, was designed by Thomas Fuller and completed in The building first served a federal customs house and post office un l the City of Orillia purchased it in In 2004, the building underwent a $1.1 million renova on. In , the building underwent a $2.1 million renova on, enabling the building to be physically accessible and providing more gallery and studio space to OMAH. By enlarging the footprint of OMAH in the community, we have increased engagement and provided an emo onal connec on with our cons tuents. OMAH s job is to hold a mirror up to Orillia and area to s mulate and guide discussions around culture and heritage. We make culture and heritage ma er, inspiring crea vity and celebra ng history.
