3 3 Camp X Walking Tour at Intrepid Park 2008 Boundary Road Located on the shore of Lake Ontario, the memorial to Camp X at Intrepid Park is dedicated to the men and women who were employed at the British Security Coordination spy training school and communications centre located here during the Second World War. While the buildings associated with the site have either been demolished or relocated a memorial was erected in START TIME: 10:30 a.m. Join historian/best-selling author, Lynn Philip Hodgson for a guided tour. Hodgson consulted with the CBC for their hit series X Company, a spy thriller inspired by real-life stories at Camp X. 4 Centennial Building 416 Centre Street South Classical Revival The Ontario County Courthouse was built between 1852 and However, by 1964 the building had become too small to accommodate the needs of Ontario County and a new courthouse was built on Rossland Road. In 1967, with assistance from the Canada Centennial Project, the original courthouse was reopened as a community centre known as the Whitby Centennial Building. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Catch the Whitby Courthouse Theatre s June production of Into the Woods, JR. and tour backstage (available all day). 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. - See a special presentation on the fashion and threads of yesteryear by The Costume People s Patty Davis. 4 5 Downtown Walking Tour Whitby Public Library, 405 Dundas Street West Presented in collaboration with the Downtown Whitby Business Improvement Area and Jane s Walk START TIME: 2 p.m. This guided walking tour is approximately one hour and will begin at the Whitby Public Library. Explore the historical downtown, meet business owners, connect with neighbours, hear local stories and discover all of what Downtown Whitby has to offer. Please dress according to weather and wear walking shoes. 6 Gallery Dental Centre 1200 Brock Street South Queen Anne This Queen Anne style house was built in 1904 for Thomas Jackson, a local builder and shop owner. The house was eventually sold to Mary Brawley who served as acting sheriff for Ontario County from 1931 to She lived in the home until her death in 1990, after which time the building fell into a state of disrepair. In 2002, the house was restored and became known as Antony s Gallery featuring original Canadian art run by Antony von Palleske. Finally, in 2012, the house was renovated and became known as Gallery Dental Centre led by Dr. Daniel Pesin. Tour the building to see how Dr. Pesin has transformed this historical home into a modern business. PAGE 4
5 7 Heritage Walking Tour Centennial Building, 416 Centre Street South Presented in collaboration with Jane s Walk Werden s Plan Neighbourhood District encompasses part of the original plan of subdivision owned by Asa Werden in Almost all the buildings in the neighbourhood are single-detached houses built from the mid-nineteenth century onward. The houses in the district display a wide range of wellpreserved, traditional architectural styles and reflect the development and affluence of the Town during this historic period. START TIME: 10 a.m. This guided walking tour is approximately one hour and will begin at the Centennial Building. Take in this historical neighborhood through a guided tour at street level, connect with neighbours, hear stories and discover unseen aspects of the community. Please dress according to weather and wear walking shoes. 8 Lynde House Museum 900 Brock Street South Georgian One of Whitby s oldest homes, the Lynde House, was built around 1812 for Jabez Lynde, an early American settler of Whitby. Originally located at 960 Dundas Street West, the house was moved to Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village in 1986 and to its current location in Take a step back in time and tour the Lynde House Museum. 8 9 Masjid-e-Ayesha (Mosque) 221 Kendalwood Road For almost 20 years, the Whitby Mosque has served the community through various activities that promote good Islamic and human values. The Mosque has transformed from its humble beginnings in an industrial unit to a centre that provides spiritual, recreational, social and educational opportunities to the rapidly growing Muslim population of Whitby and surrounding areas. Tours will be provided throughout the day. 10 Racic Family Home (Private residence) 504 Centre Street South Edwardian style This house was built between 1908 and 1909 for the family of Peter Mathison. Its architecture reflects the simple, balanced and classical characteristics of the Edwardian style. Note the relatively plain two-storey veranda, smooth brick veneer and the window sills. The Racic family welcomes you to explore their home in this picturesque, heritage neighborhood. PAGE 8
9 11 Ringwood Manor 1601 Hopkins Street Now known as Complete Packaging Blend of Regency, Italianate, Second Empire, Gothic Revival This house was constructed in 1876 for Barnabus Gibson, a railway contractor. Known as Ringwood, the house is architecturally significant and was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in After several years of neglect, a flood, and a fire in the early 2000s, Ringwood was restored in 2011 by Dr. Nihad Ali-Ridha. Tour the building to see how Dr. Ali-Ridha has transformed this historical home into a modern business. Join Mayor Don Mitchell and Members of Council for at 10 a.m. for a special plaque presentation. 12 Station Gallery 1450 Henry Street Arts and Crafts Whitby Junction Station was built in 1903 at the foot of Byron Street for the Grand Trunk Railway. In 1970, the station was adapted into an art gallery. The heritage gallery makes use of the station s old waiting room and the original trim and ticket window are still intact. Art Attack showcase. The Town, in partnership with Station Gallery is celebrating National Youth Week, from May 1 to 7, including the annual Art Attack event on May 3. Art Attack provides Whitby youth ages 12 to 18 the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents in a variety of areas including: drawing and painting, sculpture, video and film, photography, graffiti, fashion and jewellery and spoken word.
