5 Girls footy continues growing Welcome to the 2018 TAC Cup Girls season the second edition of Victoria s premier under-18 female football competition. Inaugural TAC Cup Girls premiers the Calder Cannons had a successful year capped with three selections from among their ranks at the 2017 NAB AFL Women s Draft. 11 TAC Cup Girls graduates in total were selected by AFL Women s clubs as draftees or rookies last year, highlighting the competition s ability to develop quality footballers even in its infancy. Eight of those 11 players have already made AFL Women s debuts four rounds into the 2018 season, with Calder s Chloe Molloy in particular recognised for her instant impact at Collingwood with a NAB AFL Women s Rising Star nomination following her first game. Molloy the 2017 joint TAC Cup Girls Best & Fairest with Carlton draftee Bridie Kennedy (Dandenong Stingrays) is a shining example of how the Victorian female football pathway can develop elite-standard talent. Returning to football after several years playing basketball, Molloy last year progressed from Calder s program to Diamond Creek in the Swisse Wellness VFL Women s, where she jointly topped the competition s goalkicking count. Five other TAC Cup Girls players also followed this pathway to AFL Women s. In light of the rapid growth in female football participation in recent times, the TAC Cup Girls system has grown accordingly from last year. The 2018 season has expanded to nine rounds from five in 2017 and a grand final between the top two teams on the ladder at the end of the home-and-away rounds has been introduced. TAC Cup clubs have also appointed dedicated Female Talent Coordinators to oversee their girls football programs, and we wish them and all their players the very best for the season ahead. We also thank the Transport Accident Commission for their continued support of TAC Cup Girls and we in turn support the TAC s Towards Zero vision for a safer future on Victorian roads. 7 TAC Cup Girls captains predictions The 2017 TAC Cup Girls season saw the Calder Cannons claim the competition s inaugural premiership, Chloe Molloy (Calder) and Bridie Kennedy (Dandenong Stingrays) share the TAC Cup Girls Best & Fairest award and 11 TAC Cup Girls graduates join AFL Women s lists later in the year. What will happen in 2018? The TAC Cup Girls season has expanded to nine rounds from five in 2017 and a grand final between the top two teams on the ladder at the end of the home-and-away rounds has been introduced, giving Victoria s best under-18 female footballers more of a chance to show their wares. 13 Fitness Testing Day The annual Fitness Testing Day for TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls players takes place this coming Saturday March 10 at Maribyrnong Secondary. Players will undergo physical testing in front of AFL club recruiters, completing the 20m sprint, agility test, standing vertical jump and running vertical jump, with boys to complete the yo-yo test (replacing the beep test) and girls to complete a 2km time trial. They will also take part in education sessions throughout the day on current issues such as performance-enhancing and illicit drugs, gambling, racial vilification and respectful relationships. AFL Victoria s Head of Athlete Management Matt Glossop said Fitness Testing Day is important for a number of reasons. For the players, it s the first chance to present in front of AFL club recruiters in their draft year and demonstrate how they have improved over the last 12 months or the off-season, Glossop said. News For TAC Cup clubs, it symbolises the end of preseason when lists are finalised and the focus is shifting to who is in their Round 1 team, while for AFL recruiters, it s not just about the numbers they are also looking at some things that can t be measured. In terms of the numbers in 2017, Northern Knight Jack Petruccelle marked himself as the quickest player in the TAC Cup with a 2.8-second 20m sprint and 12 months later finds himself at the West Coast Eagles. Meanwhile, the Geelong Falcons showed their running capabilities with eight players reaching Level 15 on the beep test. The team then went on to become the 2017 TAC Cup premiers on the back of their hard-running game style. 9
