5 Celebrating cultural diversity This weekend marks the start of Cultural Diversity Week in Victoria and provides an opportune moment to reflect on the impact of multiculturalism on Australian football. Cultural Diversity Week is an initiative of the Victorian Multicultural Commission with support from the Victorian Government, featuring a range of events and activities recognising that almost half of Victorians today were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas. Multiculturalism runs deep in the groups of players, support staff and fans involved in our national game and is evidence of how football can unite communities through a common passion. AFL Victoria runs a range of programs aimed at strengthening multiculturalism in football, several of which feed into the TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls competitions. Gippsland Power s Changkuoth Jiath last year became the first AFL draftee to have come through one of AFL Victoria s multicultural programs when he was rookie-listed by Hawthorn as part of its Next Generation Academy system. Of South Sudanese heritage, Jiath participated in the All Nations program as an under-15 player before going on to impress with his athleticism in the TAC Cup, and we re sure similar stories will emerge from the TAC Cup Girls system as the pathway for under-18 players towards the AFL Women s competition is strengthened. To highlight stories such as Jiath s, the TAC Cup and VFL websites will feature a series of stories throughout the season under the title Identity, focusing on players in our competitions from multicultural and indigenous backgrounds. A story about ex-sandringham Dragons and current Casey Demons player Goy Lok s journey from war-torn Sudan as a child to winning a TAC Cup premiership with the Dragons and becoming a VFL Multicultural Ambassador is now on our websites. In the story, Lok talks about how Australia and its national game has changed his life for the better a fitting sentiment ahead of Cultural Diversity Week with its theme of Proud to belong. 7 Western Bulldogs List Manager Michael Sandry (left) discusses selections at the NAB AFL Women s Draft The recruiter s eye The AFL Victoria Record this week chats to two of the key figures in recruiting TAC Cup Girls players to the AFL Women s competition. Western Bulldogs AFLW List Manager Michael Sandry and Melbourne AFLW/NGA/Future Talent Manager Todd Patterson talk about what they look for while watching TAC Cup Girls games and how TAC Cup Girls players can prepare themselves for potential careers in the rapidly changing AFL Women s environment. Firstly, how much scouting of the TAC Cup Girls competition will you and your team be doing this year? Michael Sandry: There s four of us in the team and we ll be watching just about every game live or on tape. Across our whole team, it d be a rare occasion when we d miss a game. Todd Patterson: We ll be trying to cover every game. In Round 1 we had people working at four of the six games, but I ll watch every game on vision and do edits every week, so we re pretty comprehensively across it. At the start of the year we ll have a general list of players that we re interested in and players will jump on and off that list as the season goes. We ll then follow them at either their VFL Women s or local club after that. 3

8 What are the key qualities you re looking for in under-18 players when watching games? MS: At this level, we re looking for the girls that stand out in having a strong influence on the game. The key thing is their skill level and how natural they look as a footballer. We also look for whether they re capable of playing at senior level straight away or if they need development in certain areas and whether they have certain traits that are elite and set them apart from everyone else. It may just be one thing some X-factor or they may be an elite kick or an elite runner but it s something that catches the eye. Another really important thing for us is their character; we look at how they carry themselves on and off the field and their motivations for playing at the elite level. It s not just about looking for the best footballer but also how they ll potentially fit in with the group we have. We want a list that can grow and be sustainable over a long period of time. TP: We re really just looking for the fundamentals girls that can execute the simple skills and play the game the right way, and look like they re enjoying playing with their teammates. You can complicate it, but at the end of the day it s not that complicated. What direction is AFL Women s going in and what does it mean for under-18 girls today? MS: It s clear the quality of AFLW is improving dramatically, and there will be plenty of opportunities for under-18 girls in coming years because they have the skill set some of the mature-age girls that haven t been playing footy their whole lives don t necessarily have. Most of the mature-age girls that are going to survive in AFLW are already playing it, so with the expansion teams coming in (six new teams over the next two seasons), under-18 girls and players switching from other sports are going to get plenty of opportunities they otherwise may not have received. TP: I think there ll be less and less cross-code athletes as the under-18 talent pathway gets stronger and stronger. Even this year we d expect there to be more draftees out of the TAC Cup Girls system and the opportunities are only going to get greater and greater if young girls want to really apply themselves. Ex-Calder Cannons player Monique Conti (right) has starred for the Western Bulldogs through the 2018 AFL Women s season 4

9 Ex-Northern Knights player Maddy Guerin (right) made her AFL Women s debut for Melbourne in Round 1 this year How would you advise TAC Cup Girls players to prepare for a potential AFL Women s career? MS: If there s one thing the competition really needs and that we re really looking for, it s skill level. They should really make sure they re practising basic skills. They may be athletic and that s allowing them to excel at this stage of their career, but when they come up to AFLW, having a good skill set and trying to push their skills to be elite is probably the key to a sustained career. TP: I d advise them to ask lots of questions of as many people as they can to understand what it s like to be elite and to have a good balance in their life between football, schooling and their personal life, as I think those off-field factors flow into their on-field performance. I d also recommend investing time in things that might seem boring, like the fundamentals of football. How did TAC Cup Girls players from 2017 end up being drafted to your club last year? MS: We recognised Monique Conti (AFL Women s Draft pick no.4, ex-calder Cannons) was highly talented from very early on. Seeing her be able to manage her basketball career and football was a tick for us and, following her through from TAC Cup Girls, another big tick was that she was able to play some VFL Women s games (for Melbourne Uni), so we knew she was capable of having an impact straight away. It came back to the character side of things as well; we got a good gauge of Monique and what she was all about and decided she was a good fit for us. TP: We watched Eden Zanker (pick no.6, ex-bendigo Pioneers) and Maddy Guerin (pick no.14, ex- Northern Knights) through TAC Cup Girls pretty closely. Eden probably stood out to us in TAC Cup Girls more than Maddy, but then once we took a step back and looked through the vision, Maddy had some real traits we thought would transfer to the AFLW game and which saw her selected for Round 1 this year. We were really comfortable with their character and the fact they had something elite to their game. If girls have that something special about them they re a fantastic kick or mark, or they have some speed we think we can help build their game around that. 5
