Architecture Sector Higher Education Sector Type Permanent Full-time Appointed From April 1996 Current Appointed To N/A Position Architect Organisation University of the Free State, Earth Unit Sector Higher Education Sector Type Permanent Full-time Appointed From April 1997 Current Appointed To N/A Personal Profile I am an architect, lecturer and researcher in earth construction and architecture, at the University of the Free State (UFS). I have completed a PhD (Architecture) thesis in January 2015 at the UFS on the perceptions of earth-constructed houses in central parts of South Africa. I currently coordinate the architectural development program at the Earth Unit (EU) within the Department of Architecture at the UFS. The core objectives of the EU is to allow students to gain experience through building projects, developing building capacity and reaching out to communities in the Free State and the Northern Cape Provinces. The character of the soil of the central parts of South Africa, the vernacular architecture and the climate, allows suitable use of both adobe (non-stabilized or cement stabilized sun dried earth blocks) and CEB (cement stabilized compressed earth blocks). I have been involved part-time in design and technical studio workshops at the Dept. of Architecture since 1996 and full time since I completed my undergraduate (B. Arch. Stud ) and graduate studies (B.Arch. 1994) at the UFS. In my fifth year I started specializing in Earth Construction with the mini-thesis title: A Town Centre in Earth Architecture - Oppermansgronde. After graduating I received a travel and study bursary (1995) from the French Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, to continue my studies in Earth Construction. I completed an Intensive Course and a design workshop in The Low Cost Building Construction Project program at CRATerre at the Grenoble School of Architecture in Oct in France. This course prepared me for the following: 1. The co-management and technical assistance of several community-projects in the Bloemfontein area, where small builders in communities, university students and professionals were trained in the advantages of an economical, environmental and socially beneficial approach through the use of adobe and CEB. 2. The development of the student curriculum at the Dept. of Architecture, UFS, since The completion of several commercial, retail and residential buildings and projects, in two architectural practices and my own current private practice Terre Firme Architects. 4. The start and completion of a taught-master s (DPEA-Terre) in Earth Construction consisting of a six month period at CRATerre-EAG, and a 18-month period to complete my research at the Department of Architecture in Bloemfontein at the UFS. The title of my mini-thesis: Teaching Earth Architecture at the Department of Architecture at the University of the Free State: current situation, analysis and perspective. This resulted in the further curricula development of the course program in Construction and Design studio work for first to third year students. In September 2015 I received the "Vice Rector's award for Outstanding Service, Commitment and Excellence in the Field of Community Engagement" - Categories: Service learning and Community-engaged Research from the UFS. I have been involved in the physical realization of several Community Service Learning projects since 1997 and as senior researcher initiated a SANPAD-research project in the Free State and Northern Cape Province ( ) that investigated the perceptions of people living in earth housing in the central parts of South Africa. The project has received international recognition at several international conferences for the contribution the EU has made to promote earth construction techniques using sustainable techniques and products. The data from the SANPAD project (Title: A South African Renaissance - acceptability of sustainable, high quality, earth constructed public and private buildings to support sustainable local economic development) was used for my own PhD research where the factors that influence the acceptability of earth constructed buildings in central South Africa were further explored. The EU has been a partner of the UNESCO Chair in Earth Architecture since The EU is one of few institutions worldwide that has included Earth Construction as part of their student curriculum. The EU is one of nine partners in Africa and one of the thirty one international partners. I attend regular meetings and conferences RA Dr Gerhard Bosman Page 4 / 17
5 hosted by these international partners, where training methodologies, teaching and curricula are presented and developed. The past seven years I have completed four peer reviewed articles. During the last eight years I attended and presented five papers and a poster as a partner of the UNESCO chair at: the Terra tenth international conference on earth heritage and conservation in Mali, Bamako, West Africa (Feb. 2008); the Terra-Education2010 Seminar in Grenoble, France (May 2010); the Terra2012 eleventh international conference on earth heritage and conservation in Lima, Peru (Apr. 2012); the Vernacular Heritage and earthen architecture conferences in Portugal in Villa Nova De Cerveira (Oct. 2013); and a VERSUS conference in Valencia Spain (Sept. 2014). I contributed to a book, Architective: Building construction standards for South Africa, on earth construction. It was completed together with green building architect Etienne Bruwer (2013). This book is a welcome addition as handbook for architecture students at Schools of Architecture in S.A. 13 Best Research Outputs from Student Supervision in Last 8 Years I acted as a promoter for the M.Arch (Research) dissertation of Colleen Steenkamp. This is one of four M.Arch (Research) dissertations completed at the UFS since While completing my own PhD I supervised Colleen Avice Steenkamp with her research Masters in Architecture at the University of the Free State from 2010 till The title of her dissertation was: Revalidating vernacular techniques for a sustainable built environment by way of selected examples in the Eastern Cape. Steenkamp investigated contemporary design and construction methods used by architects in the Eastern Cape province. The purpose of the research was to determine if vernacular architecture and building techniques could be a possible solution to the problems concerning contemporary design in the Eastern Cape. Five case studies were conducted for this research. The first involved a perception analysis through a questionnaire of inhabitants of vernacular and contemporary homes in umasizakhe, Graaff-Reinet. The next two case studies involved documenting the now-demolished Luxolweni community on the outskirts of Hofmeyr and three nowdemolished rondavels surrounding Hofmeyr. The last two case studies were from recently-built contemporary designs (a small community/ commurcial building complex in rural Centane and a bigger office building steeped in innovations for sustainability in East London). The main results from the research revealed that the material properties of vernacular buildings are in many ways superior to their contemporary counterparts (these houses are cooler in summer and warmer in winter), vernacular homes are considered socio-culturally acceptable by their inhabitants, vernacular techniques can be successfully incorporated into contemporary architecture and that innovations can be incorporated within vernacular architecture for longevity. It was concluded that vernacular architecture has the potential to improve human settlements and the sustainability of the built environment, as well as strengthening the cultural identity of the local populace. This research is relevant in a country where buildings are often unsustainable and housing is lacking, as it offers a potential solution to these problems. In April 2001 I received a full time appointment as lecturer at the UFS. From 1996 till 2004 I have mainly focused on teaching and community service learning projects to gain technical experience in earth construction. The past nine years I have been committed to establish a well balanced academic career that includes: community engagement; student teaching; research guidance to students and junior staff; conference contributions; and international collaboration as a member of a UNESCO Chair in earth architecture. In 2006 I focused my career on the acceptability of earth construction in South Africa. The first opportunity to present preliminary finding of a SANPAD project (initialised by myself) was realized with my attendance of the Eco- Architecture conference at the Wessex Institute of Technology in new Forest in the United Kingdom. The positive feedback from this experience guided my research efforts and focus. I continued to learn from my experience on the training, teaching and building efforts on community buildings to address and understand the perceptions of users and designers of earth buildings in South Africa. The traditional earth building techniques of South Africans are well documented, but little research reflects the current perceptions of these building materials and techniques. The PhD research efforts explored the factors (independent variables) that can be addressed in order to make earth constructed houses in general more acceptable in central areas of South Africa. The research mainly drew on data obtained from the SANPAD project (South Africa-Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development) with a household survey (n=1790) from respondents regarding their perceptions and attitudes towards earth construction. Multiple qualitative and quantitative responses were recorded both for and against the use of sun dried earth blocks (adobe). Correlation and regression analyses were used to test for the characteristics (significant variables) that influence the acceptability of earth constructed houses. The findings of the SANPAD-project and the PhD research showed that respondents regard traditional earth building materials as inferior. Limited other studies confirmed the low acceptability of traditional earth constructed walls. Regression analysis of the PhD research could not confirm that personal and household characteristics are associated with the housing, context and acceptability characteristics. Correlation analyses confirmed that certain housing characteristics (basic services such as water born toilets connected to sewerage systems, running water and electricity) influence the acceptability of traditional earth constructed houses. Correlation analyses confirmed that context characteristics (location and area types) influence the acceptability of traditional earth constructed houses. A further investigation and continued data analysis outside of the PhD research, confirmed that the building culture (available material and buildings skills) and upward social mobility together with Reconstruction and Development Program (RDP) houses (with basic services) influence the acceptability of traditional earth constructed housing. RA Dr Gerhard Bosman Page 13 / 17
14 The findings concluded that attitudes toward traditional earth construction are more positive in 1) informal urban areas where informal houses do not have access to basic services and 2) rural households where the building culture dictates the norm even without basic services. The effects of conformity, imitation and upward social mobility were confirmed, as stated by the literature and the data. Together with upgraded earth construction techniques (such as cement stabilized compressed earth blocks or bricks) wall components for earth buildings in parts of central South Africa may be more acceptable, which will have positive influences on the current housing situation. After the completion of the PhD, the hypothesis is that if the influencing factors on the acceptability of traditional earth constructed housing are known, it can be used in the promotion of contemporary earth construction. Future research efforts will aim to promote contemporary earth construction techniques. Academia should support the building industry, because the private sector and government are struggling with housing issues. This should be done by equipping and educating the public about the importance of preserving existing forms and methods of earth construction, in order to support useful applications within contemporary architecture. Self-assessment of Research Outputs In the last ten years I have attended meetings and conferences at schools of architecture in Bamako, (Mali), Eindhoven (The Netherlands), Grenoble (France), Amman (Jordan), Lima (Peru), Perth (Australia), Alger (Algeria) and some national schools and departments of Architecture in South Africa. This exposure supported the notion that globally traditional earth constructed is not acceptable by end-users. However very few studies could give explanations to the reasons or factors that influence and affect perceptions and acceptability. The contribution of my research attempts to promote the many advantage of green building by utilizing earth construction in a contemporary application to address reservations of the technical properties of the building material often mentioned. My research outputs of the last eight years were focused on the the promotion on earth construction. During this time I completed a PhD (Architecture), while running a small but active architectural practice. I can summarize my scholarship efforts in three parts: Scholarship of Discovery The Earth Unit (EU) at the Dept. of Architecture has received international recognition the past 19 years. Since 2004 I have coordinated the training and teaching activities of the EU. The core objectives of the EU are to gain experience through building projects, developing building capacity and reaching out to communities. My research activities focused on the acceptability and promotion of earth construction as part of four international funded research/training projects and a PhD thesis. These findings were presented at four national conferences in Johannesburg and Cape Town (Sustainable Built Environment Conference (Bosman, 2005); AZA2010 Reimaging Jo'burg Conference (Bosman, 2010); Human Settlements Indaba (Steÿn & Bosman, 2010); The South African Housing Foundation Conference (Bosman & Steÿn, 2014), and six international conferences in Jordan, Mali, Peru, UK and twice in Portugal. Four articles were presented to promote earth construction as a green building process (Bosman, 2009; Steÿn & Bosman, 2010; Bosman & Van der Westhuizen, 2014a; Bosman & Van der Westhuizen, 2014b). As an effort to support and develop junior researchers I have co-authored papers with four junior staff members (Nel & Bosman, 2014; Wessels & Bosman 2014; Bosman & Whitfield, 2015; Bosman & Salzman-McDonald, 2015) since Scholarship of Teaching Since 2005 I have established, developed and coordinated the Environmental Built Solutions (EBS) programme within the BAS and BArch (Hons) degrees for horizontal and vertical integration. These outcomes were well received by the SACAP validation panels of 2008 and This programme has received international recognition at several international conferences (Bosman, 2008; Bosman, Smit & Steÿn, 2010) for the contribution the EU and the department has made to promote earth construction techniques using sustainable techniques and products. The EU has been a partner of the UNESCO Chair in Earth Architecture since As member of the chair I had the opportunity for regular visits and meetings between international partners where training methodologies, teaching and curricula were presented and developed (Bosman, 2010; Bosman, 2014; Bosman & Van der Westhuizen, 2014; Nel & Bosman, 2015). Scholarship of Engagement Since my involvement in the activities of the EU in 1996 I have been involved in the realization of 8 small to medium scale buildings (a prototype farm worker s house, two day-care centres, four ablutions blocks, a workshop complex, a visitor s centre and two school assembly halls) in earth construction in the Free State and Northern Cape provinces. These Community Service Learning projects provided workshop and learning opportunities for engagement of students (from the three building science departments of the UFS) together with community members. Working with small community groups in Mangaung, Gariepdam and Kuruman provided practical and technical solutions for earth buildings. But, addressing technical issues were only half of the problems solved. The problems regarding social acceptability were addressed by the SANPAD project and my recently completed thesis. I have initiated and helped to secure funding to complete the Thuba Makote - Schools as center for adult education in Bankhara Bodulong (near Kuruman) and the SANPAD-research project. Ongoing and Planned Future Research Ongoing research In South Africa we have a large housing shortage but the traditional ways of building are not used as permanent structures by urban squatters or in informal settlements. They prefer to use corrugated iron sheets and plastic. In the conventional building of housing for the poor, traditional methods such as earth building techniques are not yet part and parcel of the existing government projects. Using upgraded earth construction might be more sustainable as far as the environmental and the economy of South Africa is concerned. If more government funded projects in the development and propagating of these methods can be secured, it will help the poorest of the poor to acquire housing of a better quality than the squatter units they are using today. South African and African researchers should strengthen the shared interested in the sustainable and economic development of urban areas. The successful application will provide for exchange of information between researchers efforts in training in earth construction technology, teaching, research and changing perceptions regarding building methods. The integrating of earth construction and low-cost appropriate technologies will optimize the environmental and natural resource utilization. Furthermore, sustainable development together with the impact of education and training will ensure human capital development. Future Research A further research project will be a social study based in the South African built environment. Measuring and investigating the attitudes of the home owners in Soul City, a new urban area of Kimberley, the capital of the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. A household survey will establish the acceptability of compressed earth block houses utilized in Soul City, constructed by the local government and the provincial Department of Housing, between The inhabitants of Soul City were involved in the set-up of a local brick yard that produced all the wall building material for more than 300 houses. Construction for this project started in 2003 and lasted till The houses that were constructed were 20 percent larger than the average top structure of 40m² RDP-house. All parts and components of the structure were conventional except the wall element built in the local produced cement stabilized earth blocks. The saving on the wall element allowed the contractors to increase the footprint of the house and established an L-shaped plan, which the home-owners could extent to at their own cost. Previously data was collected on the acceptability of traditional earth constructed houses (SANPAD-Project), but this future research will provide more knowledge on the factors that influence the acceptability of contemporary earth constructed housing. This information will contribute to the limited but growing field of research into the usefulness of earth construction for contemporary application. This research will be important for the continued search in the built environment to provide sustainable transformed urban living. A secondary aim is to determine if employment opportunities resulted from the Soul City project and also if there was a transfer of skills that contribute to local economic development and the employability of the brick makers. According to Lindiwe Sisulu, the Minister of Human Settlements, South Africa has a housing shortage of 2.3 million units (SAHF, 2014) but the traditional ways of RA Dr Gerhard Bosman Page 14 / 17
15 building are seldom used by urban squatters. They prefer to use corrugated iron sheets and plastic. The South African government cannot keep up with its own policy of providing housing for the poor, because of the rising housing cost of conventional building methods and the high cost of providing basic services. The new home owners are furthermore often disappointed/ unhappy with the size of the houses, which do not make provision for large extended African families. The community in the area seldom benefit from the construction project through job creation or skills transfer. In the conventional government provided housing projects, traditional methods such as earth building techniques are not yet part and parcel of the existing projects. Furthermore are the cultural and individual preferences not accommodated through these housing delivery processes.
