James Ihde and Music Director Beatrice Jona Affron James Ihde: With Grace and Fortitude By Tom Turner Ballet dancers are not just artists. They re athletes and elite ones at that. They are focused, ambitious, and required to operate at peak levels of physical endurance. But unlike some of their sports-figure counterparts, they aren t household names. And while no city will throw a parade in their honor, the amount of sweat and toil required to achieve the rank of professional remain the same, as does the chance of ever reaching that unique milestone, even after years of preliminary training. To dance professionally requires a high degree of fitness and stamina, along with equal measures of artistry and craft. To do so for 15 years is impressive. For 20 years, remarkable. And 25 years, well almost unheard of, especially in a profession so physically demanding and plagued with injuries. Yet Pennsylvania Ballet soloist James Ihde did just that, having spent the past quarter century as a ballet professional. By way of comparison to other locally celebrated athletes, Mike Schmidt, one of the greatest Phillies to wear the uniform, lasted 17 seasons as a professional; Julius Erving survived 16, as did beloved Eagles safety Brian Dawkins. To say James Ihde is treading rarified ground is an understatement. To say he has done so with grace and fortitude is not. Over the years, his commitment has never wavered, and he continues to dance as strongly and consistently today as he did the first time he set foot on stage. James Ihde s ballet journey began in Kent, Ohio in 1985 when he would accompany his two sisters, Jessica and Elisabeth, to ballet class. After months of prodding, their Photo: Arian Molina Soca 4

Photo: Alexander Iziliaev James Ihde teacher, Ms. Gina Carroll, had convinced James to join them. In addition to needing more boys in her class, she saw in James something special, which is why when the time came, she encouraged him to audition for Pennsylvania Ballet, a company where she believed he would find success. At the time, James did not think a professional career was in the cards for him. Thankfully, his teacher was right, and he obviously could not have been more wrong. After one summer at the Rock School, James was invited to join the company for the season, and he moved to Philadelphia, where he would spend the next 25 years of his life. In that time, James has witnessed or played part in many cultural firsts for the city, including the Avenue of the Arts, Shut Up & Dance, FringeArts, and BalletX, whose co-founders, Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan, both danced with James early on and still consider him a close friend. Neenan, also Pennsylvania Ballet s current choreographer in residence, even credits James as integral to my early development as a choreographer, calling him a shining example who never allowed his ego to conflict with the work. James has danced with ballet s best and brightest and collaborated with some of the industry s finest artists, including his three artistic directors: Christopher d Amboise, Roy Kaiser, and Angel Corella. Kaiser, his director of 19 years, lauded James s commitment to craft and described him as a dedicated dancer who gave Philadelphia audiences many memorable performances. Corella was no less effusive with his praise, calling James a wonderful dancer and an exceptional partner. Anyone who has seen him perform knows this, said Corella, but I hope they also know just how much he brings to this company. His dedication, positive energy, and willingness to push himself and explore new ways of working have served as a model for our dancers. He is the epitome of what it means to be a professional, and I am so thankful I had the opportunity to work with him. He s an important part of Pennsylvania Ballet history, and I will greatly miss having him in our studios every day. 6

Photo: Alexander Iziliaev James Ihde is without a doubt the epitome of a professional. He has instructed thousands of dancers, both formally and by example. He has performed throughout the country and abroad, danced in over 500 Nutcrackers, appeared in hundreds of premieres, and originated dozens of roles in numerous productions. But James is not one to brag. If asked, he will simply tell you he was lucky enough to do something he loved for as long as he did. He will talk about his friends and colleagues and the time they shared on stage. If pressed, he might tell you the secret to his longevity was a disciplined workout regime, or that his favorite part was the pas de deux in Christopher Wheeldon s After the Rain. And while he may have shined Martha Chamberlain and James Ihde in that role, it is as poetic as it is appropriate that James is retiring with the Diamonds pas de deux from George Balanchine s Jewels. Like him, it is both entertaining and timeless, and demands a partner who is experienced and reliable. And like him, a diamond itself is renowned for its elegance, rarity, and superlative physical attributes. Now, if you will allow me to step from behind the curtain for moment, I would like to say, on a personal note, I am not only the writer of this feature and longtime fan of James Ihde, but I am also one of his oldest and closest friends. To be able to tell his story is deeply meaningful to me. I have known James his entire career. We have shared more fond memories than I care to count, and it has been my honor to watch him grow over the years, personally and professionally. Being his friend also provides me with unique insight into his character, which is why I can say without hesitation that of everyone James has encountered in his 25-year career, his greatest and most profound influence is his father, Bill Ihde. It only seems appropriate to punctuate James s career by celebrating that relationship, which is why I reached out to ask Bill what he would like to express to his son at this moment. Here is what he said: James At the age of 18, you left our home to pursue a dream. Over the years, I have watched you embrace that pursuit with a deep sense of humility, diligence, and integrity qualities I know to have sustained your remarkable career. You have thrilled audiences and colleagues alike. But, most of all, you have made your family proud and allowed me to fulfill every father s greatest dream: to be able to look at his son and say, Well done! I could not be more proud! Indeed, James Ihde has made us all proud. And, like his aptly-titled final pas upon the Academy stage, he is a true ballet diamond one Pennsylvania Ballet, the City of Philadelphia, and the dance community will surely miss but hardly forget. Congratulations James! 8

From challenging classics to daring contemporary works, our dancers have constantly pushed themselves technically and artistically, and I could not be more proud of what they have achieved. I am so excited to watch them take on next season s diverse and exciting repertoire. The 2018/2019 season begins in October with the company premiere of Sir Kenneth MacMillan s stunning Romeo & Juliet, a ballet very close to my heart that I am thrilled to be adding to our repertoire. We continue in November with an exciting mixed repertoire program featuring Jir í Kylián s Petite Mort and world premieres from Andrea Miller and Russell Ducker. Of course, December brings the timeless classic, George Balanchine s The Nutcracker - there s no better way to get into the holiday spirit. In March, we present the premiere of my re-staging of Giselle. I m really looking forward seeing our dancers portray another of ballet s classic love stories. In April, we celebrate the work of famed Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky with four ballets set to his music: George Balanchine s famed works Apollo and Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Jerome Robbin s vivid The Cage, and a world premiere from our acclaimed Choreographer in Residence Matthew Neenan. In May we present Christopher Wheeldon s DGV: Danse à Grand Vitesse, a new work by internationally renowned choreographer Jorma Elo, and the company premiere of Jerome Robbins Glass Pieces. These three dynamic ballets are perfect for closing out our season. I also want to make a special mention of Soloist James Ihde, who is retiring after more than two decades with the company. We are so proud of what he has accomplished as a dancer, and we look forward to seeing what he does next. Be sure to read the feature article in this Playbill for more about James. Again, thank you so much for joining us for Jewels. I look forward to seeing you in the theater next season. 7 Connect with Connect us! with us! PennsylvaniaBallet PennsylvaniaBallet A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Everything we do at Pennsylvania Ballet is meant to enrich the lives of those that train with us, engage in our community offerings, or who enjoy a performance. What drives us is our passionate belief that through a unique and high-quality experience, we all gain something deep within ourselves that betters our lives. Children and adults benefit from quality training not only to become dancers but also to gain strong skills that push inner boundaries and make them strong from the inside out. Discipline, goal setting, patience, diligence, and simply learning to be the best they can be are valuable tools. All for art and art for all is a common expression in the Community Engagement department at PAB. We strive to open our doors to all. Most of us can pinpoint when we first experienced dance and how it opened our eyes and expanded our perspective of life. These are defining, life-changing moments. Watching a well-skilled dancer who has trained for years is inspiring on many levels. A patron recently acknowledged the idea that we are changed after having experienced a PAB performance and to us, this is perhaps the ultimate compliment. Our lives are enriched when we allow the inspiring performance of another spark creativity in our own lives. Every employee at PAB strives to enrich your lives because the experience enriches all our lives. The way we learn to do this is much like learning how to dance: we must challenge ourselves to do our best. We do this through thoughtful planning, team work, dedication to giving the finest experience possible. This August, I will enter my first full season with PAB and I too expect to dedicate myself to enriching the lives of many. Angel Corella has an exciting season ahead, and the variety of repertoire will invoke some interesting conversations about where dance has been, and where it is headed. PAB will continue to create opportunities for children and adults through the many programs offered through The School of Pennsylvania Ballet and PAB s Community Engagement. SPB s summer program will begin in July and we celebrate the students from around the country who will join our ballet family in Philadelphia. We look forward to our new season and finding ways to assure your experience is one that enriches your lives and assuredly will enrich ours. Shelly Power Executive Director

PROGRAM NOTE Jewels Jewels is unique: a full-length, three-act plotless ballet that uses the music of three very different composers. Balanchine was inspired by the artistry of jewelry designer Claude Arpels, and chose music revealing the essence of each jewel. He explained: Of course, I have always liked jewels; after all, I am an Oriental, from Georgia in the Caucasus. I like the color of gems, the beauty of stones, and it was wonderful to see how our costume workshop, under Karinska s direction, came so close to the quality of real stones (which were of course too heavy for the dancers to wear!). Each section of the ballet is distinct in both music and mood. Emeralds, which Balanchine considered an evocation of France the France of elegance, comfort, dress, perfume, recalls the 19th century dances of the French Romantics. Rubies is crisp and witty, epitomizing the collaboration of Stravinsky and Balanchine. Diamonds recalls the order and grandeur of Imperial Russia and the Mariinsky Theater, where Balanchine was trained. Mary Clarke and Clement Crisp have written: If the entire imperial Russian inheritance of ballet were lost, Diamonds would still tell us of its essence. Gabriel Urbain Fauré ( ), was Maurice Ravel s teacher, and his life and work bridged the eras of Romanticism and Impressionism. He wrote piano and chamber music as well as incidental music for plays such as Pelléas et Mélisande and Shylock; he composed operas and many songs set to the words of French poets of the late nineteenth century, especially Verlaine. Igor Stravinsky ( ), born in Russia, is acknowledged as one of the great composers of the twentieth century. His work encompassed styles as diverse as Romanticism, Neoclassicism and Serialism. His ballets for Diaghilev s Ballets Russes included The Firebird, Petrushka, The Rite of Spring, and Apollo. His music has been used in over 30 ballets originating with New York City Ballet from 1948 through 1987, including Danses Concertantes, Orpheus, The Cage, Agon, Monumentum pro Gesualdo, Rubies, Symphony in Three Movements, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Concerto for Two Solo Pianos, Suite from L Histoire du Soldat, Concertino, and Jeu de Cartes. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky ( ) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, concerti for various instruments, operas, and works for the piano. His creations for the ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty. A native of New York City and a graduate of Yale University, Affron studied conducting privately with Robert Spano and at New England Conservatory (where she later served on the faculty) with Pascal Verrot. Affron also has worked with Gunther Schuller, Jorge Mester, and David Effron. In 1996, she received the Conductors' Guild Thelma A. Robinson Award. Her involvement in contemporary music has included conducting in the Music at the Anthology Series in New York City and leading the national tour of Philip Glass' Les Enfants Terribles in fall In 2002, Affron received international attention when she led the world premiere performances of Glass and Mary Zimmerman's Galileo Galilei at Chicago's Goodman Theater and on a tour to London's Barbican Theatre. Affron's past engagements include Dominick Argento's opera Miss Havisham's Fire with Opera Theatre Saint Louis, Strauss' Die Fledermaus with the Boston Lyric Opera, and Hansel and Gretel and The Tender Land at New England Conservatory. She has conducted both dance and opera productions at The 34 Boston Conservatory, and concerts with Boston's Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. Beatrice is a regular guest conductor at Atlanta Ballet and she has also conducted at Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Nashville Ballet, and Oklahoma City Ballet. In August 2016 she was appointed Principal Guest Conductor at Boston Ballet. GEORGE BALANCHINE Choreographer Jewels Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, George Balanchine ( ) is regarded as the foremost contemporary choreographer in the world of ballet. He came to the United States in late 1933, at the age of 29, accepting the invitation of the young American arts patron Lincoln Kirstein ( ), whose great passions included the dream of creating a ballet company in America. At Balanchine's behest, Kirstein was also prepared to support the formation of an American academy of ballet that would eventually rival the long-established schools of Europe. This was the School of American Ballet, founded in 1934, the first product of the Balanchine-Kirstein collaboration. Several ballet companies directed by the two were created and dissolved in the years that followed, while Balanchine found other outlets for his choreography. Eventually, with a performance on October 11, 1948, the New York City Ballet was born. Balanchine served as its ballet master and principal choreographer from 1948 until his death in Balanchine's more than 400 dance works include Serenade (1934), Concerto Barocco (1941), Le Palais de Cristal, later renamed Symphony in C (1947), Orpheus (1948), The Nutcracker (1954), Agon (1957),

WHO'S WHO Symphony in Three Movements (1972), Stravinsky Violin Concerto (1972), Vienna Waltzes (1977), Ballo della Regina (1978), and Mozartiana (1981). His final ballet, a new version of Stravinsky's Variations for Orchestra, was created in He also choreographed for films, operas, revues, and musicals. Among his best-known dances for the stage is Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, originally created for Broadway's On Your Toes (1936). The musical was later made into a movie. A major artistic figure of the twentieth century, Balanchine revolutionized the look of classical ballet. Taking classicism as his base, he heightened, quickened, expanded, streamlined, and even inverted the fundamentals of the 400-year-old language of academic dance. This had an inestimable influence on the growth of dance in America. Although at first his style seemed particularly suited to the energy and speed of American dancers, especially those he trained, his ballets are now performed by all the major classical ballet companies throughout the world. Founded by Balanchine student Barbara Weisberger, Pennsylvania Ballet is a company steeped in Balanchine style and repertoire. ANGEL CORELLA The Ruth and A. Morris Williams, Jr. Artistic Director Regarded as one of the finest dancers of his generation, Angel Corella was appointed Artistic Director of Pennsylvania Ballet beginning with the Season. He has also appeared as a guest artist with the Royal Ballet in London, the Kirov Ballet in Russia, and New York City Ballet. He has received numerous awards, including First Prize in the National Ballet Competition in Spain (1991), the Prix Benois de la Danse (2000), and the National Award of Spain (2003). Corella has danced for Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Sophia of Spain, and United States Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, and Barack Obama. Corella s onstage talent and passion translate wholly to his behind-the-scenes career. From , he served as director for his own company, the Barcelona Ballet (formerly the Corella Ballet), in his native Spain, where he is regarded as a national treasure.
