2 How to G et Here Plan Your Journey Self-Drive by Road Merredin is the largest regional centre in the eastern Wheatbelt which is a sub-region of the Australia s Golden Outback tourism region. Approimately. hrs drive east of Perth and. hrs west of Kalgoorlie on the Great Eastern Highway. Merredin is an RV Friendly Town with a FREE Hour stay for fully self-contained RV s at Merredin Peak one of our key attractions. The Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail will get you to Merredin following the Great Eastern Highway from Mundaring Weir near Perth to Kalgoorlie and is a scenic and historic route based on historical attractions adjacent to the water pipeline. A number of Golden Pipeline Heritage sites in Merredin are listed on our attraction page. Great Southern Rail s Indian Pacific Whether you re journeying from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific or the other way round, you ll be making your way across the longest stretch of straight railway track in the world. The Indian Pacific runs through Merredin twice weekly and will stop in Merredin to drop off or take on passengers. The Pioneers Pathway is an alternative route via Toodyay, Goomalling, Dowerin, Wyalkatchem, Trayning, and Nungarin to Merredin following the pathways of the early surveyors, pioneers and prospectors on route to the goldfields. Slater Homestead at Goomalling and Mangowine Homestead near Nungarin are two early eamples of pioneer farming life and stone lined wells line this trail. By staying a while in RV Friendly Towns or FREE camp at designated sites you will get to know our region and its friendly locals. Merredin is a central stopover and link to key self-drive routes capturing the regions history and heritage, scenery, granite outcrops and natural environment. Train Services Transwa Passenger Rail Prospector & Merredin Link The Transwa Prospector train runs daily from East Perth to Kalgoorlie and return stopping at most major towns including Merredin. Alternatively, the Merredin Link offers a weekly Wednesday return service between East Perth and Merredin. Hire an Electric Trike You can hire an electric pedal assist-trike from the Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre and eplore in style on a safe and reliable three-wheeled e-trike. We have two to hire as a perfect travel option for one or two adults. E-trikes are a convenient transport if you arrive on the train and want to get around Merredin s CBD or the two etended multi-purpose trails during your stay. They are suitable for all levels of fitness and riding abilities, or those with a disability without the risks associated with two wheel bikes. 3 History of Merredin History of Merredin The Njaki Njaki Nyoongar people traditional lands cover the towns of Merredin, Nungarin, Trayning, Kununoppin, Doodlakine, Hines Hill, Kellerberrin, Westonia, Carrabin, Bruce Rock, Corrigin, Hyden, Karlgarin, Kondinin, Kulin, Muntadgin, Shackleton, Narembeen and Moorine Rock. Aboriginal people continue to have strong connections and a spiritual relationship not only to the places but also the ecological and geographical environment. The many granite outcrops, waterways, land formations and flora and fauna within the region holds much cultural significance to the Traditional Owners through a continued relationship that spans over thousands of years. Surveyor General J Septimus Roe passed through the area in 8 and dismissed the area due to its dry and hot climate. It was not until Assistant Surveyor Charles Hunt eplored the area in 8 that Merredin s potential was realised. Water, or lack thereof, was a hurdle that needed to be overcome. Hunt established tracks from waterhole to waterhole, as well as building several dams and stone lined wells to supply water to the travellers. Merredin s European history began as a rest stop and water point on the way to the prosperous Goldfields towns of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. A superior water catchment solution was needed. A small rock wall was constructed between around the base of Merredin Peak, which channelled rain water from the rock to a spillway and into Merredin Railway Dam. This dam supplied water for the town and the railway until the construction of C.Y. O Connor s water pipeline was completed in 90. It continues to supply water to irrigate Merredin parks and gardens and with additional dams, makes Merredin a water wise town. Merredin Peak The rock wall built around Merredin Peak between leads to a storage dam that provided water for both the town and the railway until the construction of C.Y.O Connor s water pipeline. Today it is a popular picnic spot and a climb to the peak provides 0 degree views of Merredin and surrounds. 4 Attractions Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre Your first stop should be a visit to the local eperts for information on accommodation, dining out options, attractions, events, tours, self-drive guides and seasonal wildflower hotspots. We also stock a wide range of local handcrafted products, souvenirs and history publications. Eplore Merredin s multi-purpose trails on Electric-Pedal Assist Trikes available from the visitor centre for hire on an hourly, half or full-day basis. Suitable for adults of all fitness levels. Helmets included. Cummins Theatre (G) This beautifully restored heritage listed theatre is one of the oldest buildings in Merredin. In 9 the Shire of Merredin purchased the Theatre for the use of the Merredin Repertory Club. An etensive and comprehensive conservation and renovation works was funded in 009. The theatre is classified by the National Trust of Australia (WA), and in 99 was entered on the Heritage Council of WA s State register of Heritage Places. Today it holds a variety of touring productions, films and theatrical performances throughout the year. Catch a show while you are in Merredin. Merredin Railway Museum & Historical Society (G) A group of dedicated volunteers maintain these historic railway and Merredin social history collections, keeping alive this once major rail hub, its buildings, artefacts, rolling stock and steam engines. One of the prized possessions is an 89 steam locomotive that hauled the Kalgoorlie Epress. Entry fee applies. Military Museum (G) This museum is managed by a small but dedicated group of military buffs. It houses collections credited to private individuals and public donations including many military vehicles in working order. A number of other WWII sites are located in and around Merredin and surrounding district. A Military History Guide is available. Entry fee applies. Merredin Peak & Railway Dam (I) The Peak is a monolith, one single massive rock made from hard granite and eposed by erosion over millions of years. It is also a cultural reserve and an important place for the Njaki Njaki Aboriginal people. The pioneering/european story of the engineering techniques of building the stone contour wall, rock channel and Railway Dam built in 89 is eplained through National Trust interpretive signage along a bush and rock walking trail. Adjacent to Merredin Peak is the World War II remains of the / Australian General Hospital. A short selfdrive trail eplains this inland hospital s significance with interpretive signs. Merredin Peak is a hr self-contained RV site. Dogs are permitted off leash in this area. No. Pump Station (A) A point of interest on the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail located km west of Merredin off the Great Eastern Highway. This once significant structure is now a stabilised ruin with a water pipeline interpretive sign at the site near the Information Bay rest stop and picnic shelter. Wind Farm (J8) Located km south east of Merredin, the Collgar Wind Farm covers 8,000 hectares and contains turbines which generate enough power to supply,000 homes. It is the largest single stage wind farm in the southern hemisphere to date. An informative interpretive shelter on this renewable energy industry is located on Bulls Head Road. Seasonal Wildflowers Over 980 species of wildflowers are found within the Merredin Shire. See page 8 for Self-Drive trails guide. Tamma land (F) Located on the south side of Merredin, this easy.km interpretive walk trail wanders amongst delightful natural bushland where the trail markers and signage reveals the secrets of the local flora and fauna. A visit in wildflower season is a must see. Dogs are permitted on leash. Totadgin Conservative (F8) Just km south of Merredin on the Bruce Rock Road is one of Charles Hunt s historic hand built stone wells, also part of the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail. Interpretive walk trails lead to a mini wave rock in a natural Wheatbelt woodland setting. Springtime wildflowers make it an ideal picnic spot. Wheelchair access from one of the two entry car parks. Allow half a day. Take South Avenue/Bruce Rock Road kms south from Merredin. This is a must for granite rock devotees and those interested in natural history. Follow walk trail markers over the rock to the mini wave in the rock and adjacent bushland. Interpretive signs and picnic tables. Disabled access is available from Hunt s Well car park. Good walking shoes, hat and water bottle recommended. Level of difficulty is low but allow mins for the walk. Wildflowers Trail Distance appro. 0-0kms return on mainly sealed roads, some unsealed sections into reserves. Allow a full day. The corner of Merredin-Chandler Road and Talgomine Reserve Road is a wildflower hot-spot in season. Many wildflowers also at Mt Moore and Talgomine Reserve. Drive on to Eaglestone Rock and Lake Brown to eplore around the granite rock and salt lake, a great place for lunch. Early farming history at Mangowine Homestead, this National Trust Heritage site is open pm - pm and closed Wednesday. A short trip further west is Billyacatting Hill Conservation, if you have time. Some reserves have picnic facilities and toilets. 9 Merredin Self-Drive Trails Rabbit Proof Fence and Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail Distance appro. 0kms return on mainly sealed roads with some unsealed sections. Allow a full day. Take the Merredin-Chandler Road north and then east along Goldfields Road to Burracoppin, the former headquarters for the State Barrier Fence. There is an interpretive panel and remnants of the Rabbit Proof Fence along the Goldfields Road east of Burracoppin. Head north from Carrabin to Westonia with its fascinating 9 historic streetscape, visit the Hood Penn Museum and Edna May Gold Mine viewing platform km north of town. Sandford Rocks Reserve is 0kms north east and is a great place to stop and eplore, have a picnic or look for wildflowers in season. Return via the Great Eastern Highway where there is a Rabbit Proof Fence interpretive shelter on the south side of the highway. Picnic facilities at Sandford Rocks, Dogs not permitted. Collgar Windfarm Trail Distance appro. 0kms return on mainly sealed roads with an unsealed section. Allow a half day. Head kms east on the Great Eastern Highway to the Narembeen Road turnoff and head south kms. As the turbines come into view you can see the etent of the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere. Turn east into Bulls Head Road where some of the towers are close to the roadside. An interpretive shelter on the left-hand side of the road is a good place to stop and have a read on the renewable energy industry facts. Continue on to Springwell Valley Road where you turn north and will meet the Great Eastern Highway at Burracoppin. Take in the history of the Rabbit Proof Fence at the interpretive shelter on the left side of the highway on your return to Merredin. WWII Military Site Trail Distance appro. 90kms return on mainly sealed roads with some unsealed sections. Allow a half day. Some of the following sites can only be viewed from the roadside as they are on private property. Please respect the rights of these property owners. Key sites in Merredin include the Military Museum near Pioneer on Great Eastern Highway, the Australian Army Hospital site from WWII near Merredin Peak, War Memorial in Barrack Street and the Long Tan Vietnam Memorial Reflection Pond near Roy Little. These sites are indicated on the Merredin Map on page and. Leaving Merredin north along Telfer Avenue and then the Merredin-Chandler Road is a concrete igloo in a paddock on the right hand side of the road. This was originally a High Frequency Direction Finding Installation base. Follow the Merredin-Chandler Road north and turn left onto the Nokaning East Road (0km unsealed) several kilometre along you will see the remnants of the RAAF No Central Reserve Munitions Depot where concrete igloos were constructed to house a wide range of munitions. You can still make out the numbers on some doors of rounded concrete buildings scattered in paddocks. Originally the area would have been guarded by personnel who were housed in appro. 0 timber framed buildings amongst the trees. Follow Nokaning East Road until you reach the Merredin-Nungarin Road and turn north for kms to Nungarin. A visit to the Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum is a must, the museum is located in the WWII Maintenance Workshops constructed between 9 and 9. Just west of Nungarin on the Nungarin-Wyalkatchem Road on the left in the paddock is the remnants of the brick dividing fire walls of an additional five large Army store houses. The construction of the fire walls with steel reinforcing rods remain as testament to the constructions methods employed at the time. Heading back to Merredin via the Merredin-Nungarin Road you will see the remains of the RAAF No 0 Stores Depot built in 9. As you approach Merredin two large igloo shaped hangers are located on the left hand side, they were part of the depot held bulk and technical stores, from vehicle parts to uniforms, aircraft parts and equipment required by the Airforce. Wander among massive steam engines and rolling stock or climb the signal tower for a view and insight into the amount of signal levers necessary to operate this once major rail hub. Pioneer Pioneer features a 0 foot high timber and iron Railway Water Tower, built in 89. The water stored at Railway Dam was pumped to the tower and used by steam locomotives until the 90s. Have a BBQ or picnic lunch overlooking the Bronze Horse statue commemorating early farming ways. Merredin Military Museum A fine collection of military memorabilia from many conflicts include uniforms, equipment and vehicles, some restored to working order and features a decommissioned Huey a former RAAF and Army Aviation Iroquois UH-H helicopter from Vietnam War. Hitching Rail Dates from the 90s when horses were tethered to the rings attached to upright rail line while their owners purchased supplies in Barrack Street. Water Trough Circa 90s was one of 00 horse and dog troughs built throughout Australia by provision from the will of George Bills who made a fortune making wire mattresses. These duel troughs accommodated water for both horses and dogs. Dick Law Memorial Garden Established by the Shire of Merredin in 99 as a memorial to the late FA (Dick) Law in recognition of his service to the community and the publication, The History of the Merredin District. Women s Rest Centre Built as a more permanent premises in 90, after the original premises was thought outdated. The provision of a Rest Centre for Women originated from William Francis Telfer at the time when he was Chairman of the Merredin Road Board. a Merredin Courthouse This site was originally a police station. The current courthouse was built in 98 with the police station being incorporated into the building. In 9 the police rooms were converted into the magistrate s chambers and children s court and the clerk of courts 9 MERREDIN, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

11 Merredin Heritage Walk office built. In 99 the building was further modified to accommodate a holding cell, new magistrate s chambers and courtyard. Former Merredin Town Hall Originally a timber hall built on this site opened in 9, the remaining brick and tile structure built at the front of the Hall in 9 was the former Roads Board Office. The clock tower s war memorial designed by J.W Benson, Queen Victoria s clockmaker was opened in 98. It is a smaller replica of Big Ben in Westminster UK. Former National Bank Now Middleton Accountants building. Built in 9 as a house and business premises with rendered brick and a hipped gable roof of Marseille Tiles. 8 Former Ochiltree Motors Now the Palace Chinese Restaurant. Built in 9 this single-storeyed building has a corrugated iron roof and leadlight windows. A good eample of a 90s designed garage when motoring was relatively new to Merredin. The parapet walls have banded decorative pilasters and decorative mouldings abutting two street frontages, with a quarter-circle driveway at the corner. 9 Cummins Theatre Salvaged and rebuilt by brewer James Cummins with bricks from several old Coolgardie Hotels and the stage, fly tower, and pressed metal ceiling from the Tivoli Theatre in Coolgardie. Cummins Theatre opened in Merredin on the /0/98. James and later, his daughter Alice, operated the brewery in Merredin until the 90s. They are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery. 9 Bates Street First built as the Agricultural Bank in 98, WA s bank lending to farmers. The front facade of the building has architectural significance, being constructed at a time when there was confidence in the future of Merredin. 0 Former North Merredin School The Merredin State School was moved from its site halfway between town and No Pumping Station to this site in 9. With population growth, buildings were progressively etended and replaced. Another primary school was built and named South Merredin, this building becoming North Merredin. In 9 it was etended to a Junior High School. In 9 a new High School was built and North Merredin reverted to a Primary again. The school closed in 0, with the amalgamation with the new Merredin College. In 0 the building was refurbished to accommodate the Merredin Regional Library. Cnr Bates and Coronation Streets Built as an agricultural machinery dealership, Sunshine Harvester and Hugh McKay. The front facade has a plaster decoration of the rising or setting sun, the symbol of Sunshine Harvester. 0 0 Bates Street Now Merredin Bed and Breakfast. Formerly the English, Scottish & Australian Bank and a residence built in the 90s. It has been a shop, doctor s surgery, political office and therapist. Merredin Fire Station Designed by KC Duncan and opened 9/0/9, it has a residence attached with a central garage. Former Merredin Hotel Built on this site, the Merredin hotel was opened by Mr Angel the first licensee on the /0/90. Mr T Duff purchased the hotel a year later and it then became known as Duffs Hotel. This impressive building consisted of 0 bedrooms, sitting rooms, dining rooms, bathrooms, bars and a business arcade. Duffs Hotel was demolished in 9. P Post Office & Post Master s Residence 9 The Post Office would have been originally red brick with rendering that has now been plastered over. The original entrance was on the corner but has now been bricked in. The Post Office was the first major public building in Merredin. Former Lister House This two-storey shop s roof top was chosen for an air observer s post during WWII. For many years the building operated as Millar s Pharmacy until May 99 when the pharmacy relocated to larger premises. Commercial Hotel A large double story hotel built in 9 it originally had bedrooms. In 9 another wing was built with an additional bedrooms. The original cellar leading down below the bar has a clear viewing cover in the front bar room. War Memorial Located within a traffic island on Barrack Street near Fifth Street. The monument itself sits on a plinth with the names of the fallen soldiers on the wings along with a plaque commemorating fallen of later wars. 8 Long Tan Vietnam Memorial Located on the southern end of Roy Little, near the Shire of Merredin Council Chambers. The Long Tan Vietnam Reflection Pond is a dedication to the soldiers and their service during the Vietnam War. Constructed in 00 marking the 0th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
