1 COURSE 350R / 386 M : THEORY AND PRACTICE OF URBAN DESIGN THE CITY AS FORM AND IDEA IN EUROPE AND THE US INSTRUCTOR : BARBARA HOIDN OFFICE : BATTLE 117 T OFFICE HOURS : TTH 3-5 PM Overthecenturiesavarietyofimportantandinfluentialcitymodelsandformshavedeveloped,becominguniversal referrersofhumancivilisationwithregardtotheirhistorical,sociological,culturalandartisticaccomplishments. Thecitiesweliveintodayarenottheresultofacontinuousandhomogenioushistorybutarecharacterizedbyabrup interferences,eventualtransformationsandplannedinterventions.ideally,behindeachoftheseinterventionsone mayfindanideaofthecity,acontemporaryphilosophicalconceptoratheoreticalconstruct,whichismadevisible bytheformofthecity. Itisnotbyaccidentthattheimportanceofthecitieswerefertoinarchitectureandurbandesign hassomethingtodowithwhatthesecitiesrepresent(ed)intheinternationaleconomic development.logically,thefocusofinterestmovedawayfromsomecitieswhichusedtohave worldsignificancesuchasathens,venice,istanbul,kairo,cordobaordamascusandtoday,we onlyrefertotheminarchitecturalarchaeologyorfromthepointofviewofaconnaisseur. Someoftheabovementionedcitiesdefendedtheirpositionsincetheirfoundation,othershave enteredthecircleofworldcitieswheneconomysupportedit,suchasberlinornewyork, introducingnewtypologiesandlifestyles. PROGRAM: Thehistoryofcitiesisnotscientificallydocumentedorentirelyresearchedinaholisticunderstandingofthetopic whichispartoftheinconsistenciesorspeculativenatureofurbandesignpractice. Intheseminarwewillseektoincreaseaninterdicsiplinaryinsightandcuriosityinjudgingformerandcurrenturban designstrategiesratherthendentifyingonlyformalpatternsapplicableinurbandesignpractice. Theseminarwillexaminesignificantdevelopmentsinurbanformbeginningwiththeearliestdocumented metropolitancapitalsendingwiththemostrecentandprognostedtrends. Astonishinglyenough,inthelightofahistoryofalmost10.000yearsofhumandwellingmankindhascreatedonlya fewcitiesaroundtheworldtorefertoasvalidrolemodels. CitiesandrelatedUrbanTheorywillbediscussedinachronologicalorderaswellasthematicallygroupedto understandtheculturalcontextandinternationalinterdependancies.eachstudentwillprepare3 4papersduringth semesterpresentingthemforgroupdiscussion. Achronologicalhistoricalsequenceinafairlyconventionallectureformatwillintroduceintothesubject supplementedbyrelatedindividualreadingsandoralpresentationsfollowedbydiscussions.

Thesecondsegmentwillconsistofstudentpresentationsofrelevanthistoricmomentsinurban designhistory,eminentpersonalitieswhocontributedtourbandesignandcasestudiycities. Eachstudentwillelaborateon2topicsduringthesemesterandwillpresentthepaperinthe seminar. Selected,intensivereadingswillsupplementtheseminar.Readingswillbeassignedforspecificlectures. EDUCATIONALOBJECTIVES: Thechronologicalapproachtothehistoryandtheoryofcityformhelpstorevealcertainpermanentphenomena inherenttothedevelopmentofcitiesand overthecourseoftime redundantpatternsofchange.
