Message from the Board of Trustees It is with considerable pride and great pleasure that we present the ArchaeoConcept annual report for In the last year, we have completed three projects and started three new ones, including projects derived from those completed in previous years. We have also continued to work on four projects started in We have provisionally abandoned the archaeological project in Vohemar, Madagascar because of an absence of funding opportunities and a lack of interested local partners. The consulting activities expanded in 2012 after Cynthia Dunning s election as vice-president of ICOMOS/ICAHM in Europe. For family reasons, Aurélie R.v.Bieberstein moved to Freiburg in Breisgau in Germany. While still working on common projects, she has started to set up her own company with which we will be associated, in particular for European projects. We would also like to would like to extend warm thanks to all those who have helped us out throughout the year, including institutions like the Federal Office of Culture of the Federal department of Home Affairs, the Swiss national UNESCO commission of the Federal department of Foreign Affairs, or the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Protection in the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport, Swiss cantonal archaeological agencies especially the Section Archaeology of the Service for Buildings, Heritage and logistics in the Department of Finance and Exterior Affairs of the Canton of Vaud, the Ernst Göhner Foundation for its financial aid for the Archive Standards Project and the Association ArchaeoTourism We would like to thank personally Simon Kaner, Head of the Centre for Archaeology and Heritage at the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures for his precious help for organising the contacts with the Japanese archaeologists and heritage managers, as well as Daniel Thierstein, Nigel Thew and Sadie Plant for their help with the never-ending translations! 2

The ArchaeoConcept Mission and Vision ArchaeoConcept is an independent company finding solutions for those problems encountered by archaeologists and heritage managers, which cannot be answered within existing structures. ArchaeoConcept participates in integrative projects in the development of material and immaterial heritage management in developing countries. An awareness of its culture and history is an important element for the development of a country. This is where heritage management and within this, archaeology has a crucial role to play, because the study of ancient archaeological remains allows an understanding of the unwritten history of mankind. Heritage management is continually developing. This means that it is important to always know what the new needs are on a national as well as an international level. Heritage managers must be able to adapt to new realities. But they usually have no time to analyze unexpected situations or the adequate personnel are not available. In addition there is sometimes a lack of knowledge about the essential networks that can enable the development of strategies and long term concepts. ArchaeoConcept offers consultancy in the form of analyses, guidance and consultation and expertise on the one hand, on the other specialises in the development and management of projects in archaeology, conservation and museology the latter in particular through international cooperation. Our motto: «We accompany your changes in heritage management» We walk with you through your heritage Thanks to our supportive work and our extensive network we contribute to a modern, effective and sustainable development of (archaeological) heritage management in Switzerland and abroad based on the ethical principles defined by the Council of Europe and UNESCO. Consultancy ArchaeoConcept helps with the efficient development long-term strategies to achieve clearly defined aims in archaeological heritage management while taking into account existing concepts and structures. ArchaeoConcept can follow up the establishment of general or specific concepts concerning heritage management (building up restructuring sustainable management). Analysis / Expertise ArchaeoConcept carries out analyses of current situations concerning heritage management problems and offers solutions that integrate existing structures. ArchaeoConcept offers expertise in all fields of practice in archaeological heritage management and conservation. Thanks to its network ArchaeoConcept can also recommend experts in other fields in relation to heritage. Project Coordination ArchaeoConcept plans and coordinates scientific and management projects in the fields of archaeology, conservation/restoration and museology in Switzerland and abroad, implemented through international cooperation. 3

Activities 2012 In 2012, ArchaeoConcept s activities mainly took place in Switzerland, other European countries, and Japan. Consultancy Consultancy for the Egyptology Department of the University of Basel The head of the Egyptology Seminar, who is also in charge of the University of Basel King s Valley Project is looking for new sponsors for her project. ArchaeoConcept gave her advice on the preparation of an appropriate folder and assisted her with a list of interested foundations. Consultancy for ICOMOS in Bahrain From the 28 th of April to the 2 nd of May, Cynthia Dunning was invited as an ICOMOS observer to the first regional conference Prehistory and Early Civilizations in the Arab Region in Manama City, Bahrain. She gave a lecture on the UNESCO World Heritage Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps. After the conference, she presented a report on the meeting to the ICOMOS International Secretariat in Paris. Consultancy for ICOMOS/ICAHM in Japan From the 8 th to 18 th of September, Cynthia Dunning was invited as an ICOMOS/ICAHM expert member to Northern Japan (Aomori, Sapporo) to give a lecture on the UNESCO World Heritage Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps and expert advice on the tentative UNESCO world heritage site Archaeological Sites in Hokkaidô, Northern Tôhoku, and other regions. During her stay she developed important contacts for a project started in 2012 concerning an exchange of exhibitions between japan and Switzerland (see projects). 4

Analysis / Expertise Archaeological Archives The European project by Europae Archaeologiae Consilium to produce a best practice manual for the creation, compilation, transfer and curation of archaeological archives has begun at last and our team has been able to participate as a partner now that separate financing for Switzerland has been insured. Cynthia Dunning and Aurélie Rogalla von Bieberstein participated in the launch in Esslingen (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) on the 12 th and 13 th June. The core standards or recommendations resulted from a sustained exchange of comments between the European and Swiss colleagues. The applied standards will be redacted in 2013 after the results of the two workshops and the online questionnaire have been reviewed. The publication is expected for spring At the same time, we are studying the possibilities of integrating the standards for built heritage into the Swiss project. 7 Study of archaeological finds of Onnens-Le Motti (VD) At the request of the Archaeological Service of the canton of Vaud, the ceramic and metal finds of the Early Iron Age (Hallstatt) of Onnens-Le Motti (VD) are being studied with a view to the publication of a scientific book. This study includes a comparative typo-chronological analysis, the study of the material as well as its correlation with the archaeological structures which was conducted throughout 2012 and will be finished by mid Cynthia Dunning was assisted by Ellinor Dunning, who recorded all the Early Iron Age pottery shards into the database, allowing a typology of the pottery of the Onnens-Le Motti site to be developed. Partners - Section Archaeology of the Service for Buildings, Heritage and logistics in the Department of Finance and Exterior Affairs of the Canton of Vaud - Archeodunum SA, Switzerland Financing - Section Archaeology of the Service for Buildings, Heritage and logistics in the Department of Finance and Exterior Affairs of the Canton of Vaud Project Coordination Organization of a conference on archaeology and tourism in 2012 This project was the result of a contest organised by Horizon 2015 (Forum for Swiss Archaeology) for the development of Swiss Archaeology. During a brainstorming session, it was decided to organise a conference on Archaeology and Tourism. ArchaeoConcept and Nomads of Time then decided to launch de association ArchaeoTourism2012 which organised a two-day conference on archaeology and tourism at the castle of Thun on the 8 th and 9 th November. With fifty professional archaeologists and tourism specialists attending the conference, it was a great success. ArchaeoConcept aims to continue working together with ArchaeoTourism2012 in The conference was organised under the auspices of the Federal Office of Culture, Archéologie Suisse, Swiss Tourism and the Swiss Tourism Federation with the help of local partners such as the Museum and Castle of Thun, the city of Thun and the Foundation Vivat. After the introductory speeches of the director of the Museum Lilian Raselli and of Philippe Haeberli, the director of the Stadtmarketing Thun, Oliver Martin from Federal Office of Culture in the Federal Department of Home Affairs, introduced the subject by stressing the importance of communication and making new connections especially in times of economic crises. The two keynote speeches presenting archaeology to the tourism specialists and tourism to the archaeologists were given by Marc-Antoine Kaeser, director of the Laténium and Mario Lütolf, director of the Swiss Tourism Federation. The four workshops, led by Andreas Mäder (Underwater Archaeology and Laboratory of 6

Dendrochronology of the City of Zürich) and Dominik Siegrist (Institute for Landscape and Open Space, Rapperswil SG), by Rafael Matos-Wasem (HES-SO University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland ) and Laurent Flutsch (Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy), by Michel Gaudard (president European Federation of Cluniac Monastic Sites), Antje van Mark (Romainmôtier Tourism) and Sébastien Lassueur (Yverdon-les-Bains Tourism) and by Serge Volken (leather archaeologist and director Shoe Museum, Lausanne) and Samuel Zuberbühler (Swiss Tourism) gave the participants the chance to exchanges points of view on the chosen subjects. One of the outcomes of these discussions was agreement on the need to develop a common language and an information platform for both professional groups. The three last presentations given by Marc-Antoine Kaeser, Thomas Pauli-Gabi (Museum Aargau) and Erik Thurnherr (Texetera) showed that innovative ways exist for the integration of archaeology and tourism, but also that there is still much to do especially in the sector of communication, structures and education. The conference dinner was organised in cooperation with the Hotelfachschule in Thun. With a five course menu the guests were taken on a culinary journey through time, starting with a prehistoric soup and finishing with a very modern scoop of pepper ice cream. This evening also included an original artistic performance allying music and films. 9 Evaluation of the Lapidarium of Saint-Ursanne (JU) The concept of the new exhibition in the Lapidarium of the museum of Saint-Ursanne has three elements, one concerning the architecture of the building, the second dealing with the conservation of the collections and the third developing the museographic aspects of the collection. The project was completed together with Catherine Chofflon (etcaetera) and working closely with Lucette Stalder (Musée Lapidaire de Saint- Ursanne) and Steve Maridor (Enjoy Switzerland). The report was made in September The parish council will now have to look for funding opportunities for the realisation of this project. Partners - Musée Lapidaire de Saint-Ursanne, Jura, Switzerland - Enjoy Switzerland, Tourism office Biel-Seeland-Jura, Switzerland - Office of culture, canton of Jura, Switzerland - Parish of Saint-Ursanne Jura, Switzerland - Catherine Chofflon, architect in Lengnau, Bern, Switzerland Financing - Enjoy Switzerland, Tourism office Biel-Seeland-Jura, Switzerland - Parish of Saint-Ursanne, Jura, Switzerland Robert Helbling, a Swiss Pioneer in Argentina The Swiss geologist, geographer and cartographer Robert Helbling ( ), explored the mountains and glaciers of the Andes south of the Aconcagua. ArchaeoConcept obtained archive material from R. Helbling s estate on his explorations, travels and work in the central western part of Argentina. We are convinced that this unique example of mutual Swiss-Argentine cultural heritage should be shared. This archive material was shown to various interested persons, including Beat Hächler and Hans-Uli Feldmann, who found it very interesting and could imagine showing it in a small exhibition in the Biwac of the Swiss alpine Museum. The many discussions held during the last months of the year may lead to an exhibition in

Prehistoric archaeology Japan Switzerland 150 years of Swiss-Japanese diplomatic and economic relations will be celebrated in 2014 ( Treaty of Amity and Trade of 1864). In the interest of the Swiss-Japanese relations and to create awareness for prehistoric archaeology, ArchaeoConcept, in close cooperation with different partners proposes an exchange of exhibitions between Switzerland and Japan on prehistoric archaeology and an accompanying scientific conference. The first exhibition, which will be on display in several places in Switzerland, will tell the story of the Japanese Jomon Culture ( BC). The second exhibition, which will be on display in several places in Japan, will tell the story of the Neolithic cultures around the Alps (5000 to 500 BC). 11 Education and Culture ArchaeoConcept participated in the canton of Bern s first contest for cultural projects with schools ArchaeoConcept s project consisted in bringing professional archaeologists into the classroom (4th class). These archaeologists would present certain aspects of their work and develop relevant activities. The project passed the first hurdle but was not among the winners. However, thanks to the work of Samantha Dunning and Ellinor Dunning, these activities are offered in the programme Kulturprojekte in der Schule (KidS)/ Projécoles. ArchaeoConcept has again submitted a proposal to the Canton of Bern s 2013 tête à tête program. The project is of particular value to classes with many children from different cultural backgrounds. It focuses on objects of cross-cultural significance such as bread, pottery, and clothing, and uses role-playing exercises and other activities to explore the traditions and rituals associated with the manufacture and use of these goods from prehistoric times until the present day. This approach to history and culture encourages a sense of social cohesion by allowing children from diverse backgrounds to explore their common ground. This project is done in collaboration with the teacher and actress Isabelle Freymond. Future Prospects While it is relatively easy to find new and interesting projects, ways of funding them are harder to find. We are fortunate to have the backing of federal and cantonal institutions as well as some private foundations and international organisations for particular projects. We must now show what we are capable of doing. It is therefore important for us to publish the results of the conference on Archaeology and Tourism as soon as possible. The exchange of exhibitions between Japan and Switzerland are another challenge we are ready to accept. Another step in our entrepreneurial development is the move of Aurélie Rogalla von Bieberstein, who will build up a sister company to ours in Germany under the name of ArchaeoConcept Deutschland. We hope that this will make it easier to acquire new projects in Europe. 10

Organisation Our team Our team consists of Cynthia Dunning Thierstein, director of ArchaeoConcept and responsible for archaeological projects, Aurélie Rogalla von Bieberstein, responsible for conservation projects, Annemarie Willems, responsible for the international projects. In 2012 we took on Ellinor Dunning and Samantha Dunning as trainees. Ellinor worked principally on the ceramic material of Onnens-Le Motti and helped us out with the organization of the Conference on Archaeology and Tourism. Samantha and Ellinor built up the programme involving Archaeologists in the classroom (Projécoles). Every member of our team was very involved in their projects, trying to develop them and always looking for new ways to resolve the challenges they bring. To further develop our know-how and keep up to date, we each participated in various courses and conferences. Cynthia Dunning was awarded her Masters in Advanced Studies on cultural management at the University of Basel, Switzerland in November Together with with Aurélie Rogalla von Bieberstein she participated in the Annual General Assembly of the EAC in Paris (France). They were also both active participants in the launch of the Standards of Archaeological Archives in Esslingen (Germany). Cynthia Dunning also attended archaeological conferences in Switzerland (AGUS, ARS) and in Europe (AFEAF in Verona, Italy). Annemarie Willems went to the Annual Meeting of the EAA in Helsinki (Finland), where she met very interesting people and brought back ideas for our international projects. 11
