Pope Francis) THE LATIN PATRIARCHATE The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem (LPJ) was restored in 1847; its main goal is to promote the best interest of the local communities it serves in. Today, the Patriarchal Diocese oversees about 90,000 faithful in four countries, including the Galilee, The Palestinian Authority, Jordan and Cyprus, covering a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, religions and traditions. Serving all with special emphasis on the support and care of indigenous Holy Land Christians remains the enduring mission of the Mother Church, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. INTRODUCTION In the hilly region of central Palestine, ten miles north of Jerusalem, lies the city of Ramallah. It lies on a mountainous area at an altitude of nine hundred meters above sea level. Ramallah enjoys a moderate temperate climate, and this contributed to it as a tourist town prior to the Israeli occupation in It was called in the past the bride of Palestine. Today after nearly forty nine years of occupation, it hardly resembles the beautiful and beautiful little town it once was. The original population was all Christian but during the 1948 tragedy and the establishment of the State of Israel, refugees from many parts of Palestine settled in Ramallah. Today the population of Ramallah continues to grow rapidly, due to its welcoming spirit, location, proximity to Jerusalem and moderate climate. Being centrally located and well known as an open city, Ramallah is also witnessing rapid development in all senses. Housing units, banking activities, insurance companies, hotel projects and cultural activities, make Ramallah stands out among other Palestinian cities, making it very popular to live and invest in. In addition to that, Ramallah is considered to be a summer resort and a tourist and cultural attraction. Contemporary History of Ramallah The population of Ramallah has changed over the centuries. It was inhabited since the Byzantine and Crusader eras, and then it was abandoned again, until Rashid El Haddadeen came from Karak in 1550 and inhabited Ramallah. In doing so, he initiated the modern history of Ramallah, and since then, it was populated by the original Christian people until the tragedy of 1948, when both Christians and Moslems came to it for refuge. Ramallah remains the home of few thousand Christians from a total of forty thousand inhabitants, whose roots go back hundreds of years. The original inhabitants of Ramallah are indigenous to this land, as their ancestors were among the witnesses who were present at the first Pentecost. 3 The Roman Catholic Church The parish of Ramallah was the third parish in the West Bank to be established after the restoration of the Latin Patriarchate according to the church archives in Jerusalem. The Roman Catholic Church in Ramallah was established in 1855 and is named after The Holy Family. According to parish records, when at first, the Patriarch Giuseppe Valerga, sent a teacher to teach catechism based on the wishes of the people themselves, and the first school was opened and it consisted of 40 students. Then Father Pierre Cotta settled in Ramallah to establish a parish in So far 29 parish priests served in this parish since its establishment. Then in 1908 construction started on the current church and it was dedicated in honor of the Holy Family in 1912 to commemorate the Gospel event that took place in the vicinity. In El Bireh, the sister of Ramallah, there is on a hill, in the middle of the old town, the remains of a large Crusader Church, built on the remains of a Byzantine church from the fifth century. The church was named Church of the Loss of Jesus. This beautiful great church remained standing until the beginning of this century, as it was destroyed later one stone at a time by the local people. Beside the church, homes for residence were built for the Crusader Knights of St. John, a hospital and Khan, the remains of which are still found today. It is believed the Holy Family used to spend the night in the Khan on their way between Nazareth and Jerusalem. For this reason, this place is both holy and important since the Lord Jesus and His Mother Mary and St. Joseph, were not only passing by this area, but they used to remain overnight in it. Today, our Holy Family Parish is an integral part of the Ramallah community, comprising 450 families which make the overall number of faithful over 2000 individuals. They come from various social levels and backgrounds. The majority of the parish members are refugees from various parts of Palestine since the 1948 Nakba. They are involved in various trades and professions and are well integrated in all aspects of community life. A resident priest and an assistant priest, when available, administer to the parish. The parish is an integral part of the Jerusalem Latin Patriarchate. The parish runs a coeducational elementary school, as well as a high school with a student body of around 700 students both Christians and Moslems. Two sisters from the order of The Rosary Sisters serve in the parish. There is a girl s school run by Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition. Through the LPJ benefactors, the priest was able to build two apartment complexes for sixty newlywed families. In addition there are other buildings surrounding the church for the needs of the parish, such as a parish hall and an auditorium. There are various activities in the parish such as: a celebration Mass as well as two Masses on Sundays, and once a week, an hour of adoration in front of the Holy Eucharist. Meetings for the Legion of Mary and St. Vincent de Paul Society are active and also youth meetings for the various groups on weekly bases. The Scouts, Church Choir and the Servants of the Altar meet regularly, as well. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Due to the high cost of generating power and in order to reduce the high costs of electricity, the LPJ management staff is planning to install a photovoltaic power system for the Latin church in Ramallah. The engineering team recommends to install a 36 KW photovoltaic system that contains 111 modules of the Polycrystalline 325WP for each inverter. And an inverter capacity of 12 KW no. 3. PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULES: For each inverter Photovoltaic cells, which are made from doped Silicon, generate electricity when exposed to sunlight. Multiple cells are assembled together to form what are known as photovoltaic modules. Mon crystalline 325 Wp photovoltaic modules, to generate green electricity from the sun. 5 2. MOUNTING SYSTEM: Photovoltaic modules are fixed by means of mounting systems, which are responsible for holding the modules in place and support them from wind and snow loads. 3. CABLING: Cables that connect the different parts of any photovoltaic system with each other have to be protected mechanically, protected against UV radiation and from weather conditions. PV DC cables from J-Y ( ST)-Y LG, a Swiss cables manufacturer, are especially made for use in PV systems as they have a double insulated protective layer and are UV-protected. Furthermore, all outdoor cables used are enclosed in a PVC cable sleeve, and a metal cable tray if deemed necessary, so as to provide sufficient protection. 4. INVERTER: Inverters are electronic devices that smartly and efficiently convert the output of photovoltaic modules from DC to AC. The converted power is then directly fed to the institution or to the grid, depending on the electrical consumption of the institution. A Three-Phase 12 kw no.3 Transformer less inverter. 5. NET METERING: Upon having an on- grid photovoltaic system at any institution, the traditional electric meter must be replaced by a smart meter to make it possible for it to export electricity to the national electric grid. In this design concept, when the generated power of the photovoltaic system is lower than the electric consumption of the institution, the generated power of the photovoltaic system is directly fed to the institution and is supplemented by power from the national electric grid. When the generated power of the photovoltaic system is higher than the electric consumption of the institution, the generated power of the photovoltaic system is directly fed to the institution and the excess generated power is exported to the grid at a fixed rate (specified by the Electricity Regulatory Commission at 0.78 NIS/kWh). WEATHER STATION: Automatically monitors site meteorological conditions and photovoltaic panel temperature in real-time, transmitting sensor measurements to the Aurora Vision Plant Management Platform. BENEFICIARIES The direct and ultimate beneficiaries of the project are the people who visit the Church, believers and all Christian community, priests living in the Ramallah Convent, Parish Priest and other neighboring Christian institutions like Caritas and others. EXECUTION/DURATION The Latin Patriarchate technical team have prepared all the necessary detail designs and budgets for the project.
