12 Executive Director Report February 12, 2018 AIA Connecticut is the voice of the Architectural Profession, dedicated to serving its members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built and natural environments. It is our vision to continually enhance and effectively communicate the Value of Architects services. Investments The January 2018 statement balance in our investment account is $148, with $147, invested in mutual funds and $1, in money market funds. December 2017 $143, November 2017 $142, October 2017 $139, September 2017 $137, August 2017 $135, Government Affairs On January 31, the legislature convened briefly to consider an override of Governor Malloy's veto of a bill that would delay cuts in the Medicare Savings Program. The legislature convened in special session late last year to save the program, despite a promise from the Governor to veto any legislation that didn't address the full scope of the budget deficit, projected at more than $200 million for the current fiscal year. The House voted and the Senate voted 30-1 to easily override the veto.

13 Session opened February 7 th. The weather accurately reflected the mood at the start of session today--bleak and dreary. Despite the Governor's remarks on putting progressive social issues at the front and center, the budget will still be the dominant issue of the 2018 session. There will almost certainly be more cuts to state services and/or increases in taxes in order to close the $200+ million budget deficit. As this is an election year, no legislators are looking forward to these budget votes. That being said, it seemed like many Democratic legislators were somewhat energized by the focus on social issues (i.e., anything other than the budget). Annual Conference Jenny Sabin of the Cornell University of Architecture has agreed to be the Keynote Speaker. Eleven sponsors have confirmed for a total of $17,000 with a goal of $67,000 (2018 budget) Committee Reports: BP&R The Brown Bag Lunch program has been expanded: on March 16 Paul Torcellini from Eastern Connecticut State University and the National Renewable Energy Lab will lead a discussion on Zero Energy buildings. In April, at either a Farmington or East Hartford site, Greg Grew, AIA will lead a discussion on new codes. Greg will present a 2015 IRC Update on June 6 at the East Hartford Community Center. At the committee s behest, we have downloaded a draft copy of the new 2018 State codes so that members may have access to them in the interim period of code proposal review. COTE The committee continues to explore 2018 topics. The Well Building program is scheduled for May (co-sponsored by BP&R). On June 7 Joe Lstiburek of the Building Science Corporation will present an all- day program on Building Failures. We are looking for sponsor monies to support this program because of the substantial stipend. Other programs planned are a reprise of the 2017 Fuel Cell program and a presentation by Lou Daviau of Simpson Strong Tie on High Wind Loads. Off Site Construction and a Resiliency follow-up are being considered for the fall. Design Committee February meeting to be held on the 15th of the month. Education February meeting to be held on the 13th of the month. Fellows AIA Connecticut Fellows met on January 29 and discussed the process by which candidates apply for Fellowship with the backing of the chapter. A letter outlining the process this process and the alternative process was ed to all members of February 7. The AIA Connecticut website Fellows web page can be helpful to potential candidates. Professional Practice The January Professional Practice Roundtable on Marketing for Small Firms was well attended and received. Small Firms Round Table The first 2018 roundtable will be held on February 14. This will be an organizational meeting.
