CAMOC EXECUTIVE BOARD ELECTION List of candidates and their profiles: 1. Afsin Altayli Afsin Altayli is an independent museologist and heritage researcher. He holds an MA in Museum Studies and continues his PhD in Urban Planning. He has worked on different museum and heritage projects as a specialist, coordinator or consultant as well as in various public and private institutions developing projects about museology, cultural heritage, creative industries, cultural policy management. Among them were Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Development, MMKD Association of Museum Professionals in Turkey. He is an active member of CAMOC since 2010 and a founding member of MMKD: the Association of Museum Professionals, Turkey since He is the editor in chief of CAMOCnews and is teaching museology at Mimar Sinan Fine Art University, Museum Studies MA Programme. At the very start of my membership to ICOM, I chose CAMOC as my international committee and became an active member. From 2010 to present, I served CAMOC in different ways; I got involved in the organizing committees of the annual conferences, helped develop our social media platforms and strategies, took part in the editorial team of CAMOCnews as a member (since August 2014) and finally as its editor in chief (since February 2015). I believe election to the Executive Board will allow me to take my ongoing contributions to a further level and will provide me the opportunity to continue serving CAMOC in a more strategic and institutional way.
2. Layla Betti After my graduation in Humanities in Trento, I attended a Master for curators at the European Institute of Design in Rome. Then I leaded a research project at the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino about city museums in Europe and I became a CAMOC member in After two years ( ) researching, I started working at the Museo Alto Garda, organizing events to involve citizens and taking care about the Educational Services. From 2016 I am curator and contact person of the Photo Archive of the MAG Museo Alto Garda. In 2015 I started working at the Arte Sella Art in Nature project, where I am press consultant. During these years I always went on with a freelance activity as an independent curator. I have been an active member of CAMOC for the last years. I met CAMOC first time in 2011, after the Berlin Annual Conference where I presented a part of my project and met many CAMOC members. Then, due to an ICOM and a CAMOC grant I ve joined the Rio Conference in 2013, where I was elected into the CAMOC Board and started being more active. In 2014 I could join the Gotheborg Conference and from then I started being more involved into the team of CAMOCnews and started taking care of the Conference and Exhibition alerts. That year I became CAMOC Secretary, due to reorganization into the Board. In 2015 I have been at the Moscow Conference and since months I am helping to organize the Milan meeting into the great frame of another ICOM triennial Conference. I would keep on serving CAMOC as a Board member to help CAMOC to develop projects and reach new members, returning in terms of collaboration the help CAMOC gave me to take part to several events.

I ve been a heritage consultant since 1993 and previously worked as a curator and interpreter. I focus on social justice; research, planning and policy development; and arts and heritage collaborations. I work throughout Canada and have extensive international experience. I am a frequent speaker at museum and heritage conferences, and have published extensively in Western Canadian history and museology. I am a strategic thinker with expertise in civil society and not-for-profit board governance, establishing partnerships and collaborations, and fund development. I have been an active member of CAMOC for nearly a decade. I organized the CAMOC conference in Vancouver, Canada in 2012, moderated the Ignite! session in Rio, and spoke at CAMOC conferences in Vienna and Gothenburg. I served on the board from when I shifted my focus to CAM. CAM and CAMOC are collaborating on the Migration: Cities - (Im)migration and Arrival Cities project that is being initiated at this conference. This project reflects my work on a long-term project in Mill Woods, a very culturally diverse, planned community in Edmonton, leading to the 50 th anniversary of the land assembly in I plan to step aside from CAM in the next year or so and would like to become active on the board of CAMOC again. Participation in CAMOC has been very helpful to me in learning more about the most innovative civic initiatives globally.
5. Renee Kistemaker Historian / Art Historian; work at the Amsterdam Historical Museum from (as respectively: member of the Education Department, Curator, Head of Museum Affairs/vicedirector, Senior consultant project development and research). Retired in Still active today as independent senior consultant, partly for the Amsterdam Museum. Coordinating experience in several international projects, especially with city museums in European countries and with Russia; consulting experience on behalf of city museums, for example in Brugge, Volos, Bologna, Stuttgart and in the Ukraïne. Took part in the organisation of several international symposia and conferences, for example in St. Petersburg, Capetown and Rio de Janeiro; Board member of ICMAH from ; Secretary of the City History Museum and Research Network of Europe 2009-today. Special fields of interest: history of collecting and museums; urban history, urban planning and architecture; migration and processes of settlement in the past and present. I hope to make a contribution to the important and interesting work of CAMOC by using my professional experience in my career as described above. As a Secretary of the City History Museums and Research Network of Europe, I look forward to make a link between this informal Network, concentrating on European city museums, and CAMOC, which has a more international scope. And finally I hope to contribute to the way in which city (history) museums in our world can function in our cities as meeting points, as discussion centres and as a memory and in some ways a guide for our cities. All of this by using our collections from past and present, our exhibitions and pur activities. In dynamic and stimulating participation with our visitors and the citizens of the city.
6. Gege Leme Gegê Leme Joseph is an architect and urbanist (FAUUSP Brazil), set and production designer (AFDA, South Africa) and museologist (University of Leicester, UK). Gegê started her career in culture as a member of J.C.Serroni s creative atelier, a renowned Brazilian theatre design house ( ). Living in South Africa ( ), she worked in several flagship museum planning and implementation projects, as well as exhibitions and other media experiences for heritage and culture. She developed several projects beyond museums walls such as heritage routes, television shows and publications, for both public and private sectors. Gegê returned to Brazil in 2013, when she worked with ICOM Brazil. In 2014 she founded Much Media and Culture, a consultancy specialising in museums, culture and heritage, focused on integrated planning, exhibitions and experiences for various platforms. She is involved in different projects with CAMOC, as well as independent research and international publications in the museum field. As an architect, urbanist and museologist, I have always been interested in questions connecting museums, heritage and urban matters. Cities are home to 50% of the world s population, bearing witness to complexities in human relationships, and the ways in which culture and space interact to create collective territories, shared identities, but also exclusion, conflict and fragmentation. As cities grow and evolve, I believe museums of city gain a mandate to capture this change, negotiating different voices, helping mediate conflict and becoming the modern agoras, once created as places for democracy and exchange in the urban context. I wish to work with the CAMOC Board to promote museums of city as socially impactful museums for contemporary urban realities, as well as to advocate, working together and representing a group of local professionals, for CAMOC s growth within the Brazilian and Latin American museum landscapes, connecting initiatives and helping strengthen their practice.
7. Jelena Savic Jelena Savic is an architect designer and researcher, active in cultural heritage preservation and research, architectural education and architectural design. She holds a PhD from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade, Serbia (2013). She worked as an expert associate for cultural heritage at the Institute for Protection of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage of the Republic of Srpska, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina ( ), where her main responsibilities were: research on built heritage, compilation of studies, assessments and technical documentation for conservation, restoration and revitalisation (including world heritage sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina). From 2007 to 2013, she was also a visiting assistant at the University of Banjaluka. She is a member of ICOM and ICOM BiH, CAMOC and EAUH (European Association of Urban Historians). Currently, she is pursuing a research project at FBAUP, Porto, on sense of place and cultural heritage within contemporary cultural landscapes. Being member of ICOM since 2009 and of CAMOC since 2013, I attended its conferences in Rio de Janeiro, Gothenburg and Moscow, and, more recently, have been collaborating with the committee by working on the CAMOC s Facebook page and in CAMOC News. Recognizing CAMOC as a state-of-the-art forum on cities and their people, I would like to be involved more thoroughly in its activities in order to learn more in the CAMOC s stimulating environment and to have an opportunity to give something back to CAMOC and ICOM through voluntary work. I am currently not a museum professional, but, as a researcher, I am in many ways linked to the themes relevant for city museums of today. Therefore I believe I can particularly contribute to establishing stronger connections between museums and academic environments, expanding museums of cities networks, development and promotion of CAMOC s activities.
8. Irina Smagina One of the founders of CAMOC in Responsible for the CAMOC 10 th anniversary meeting, Memory and Migration in Head of the International and Regional Department of the Museum of Moscow (2001 until the present). Curator of a large number of exhibition and conference projects with various city museums in different countries. Participant and delegate to a wide range of international museum forums within ICOM, CAMOC and other professional organisations. Author of a number of projects which depict the historic and culture image of Moscow. Museums about cities have been my great interest for many years, which is why I was one of the founders of CAMOC. I have been an active member since it was set up in Moscow in 2005, helping to recruit new members and regularly taking part in conferences and the annual meetings of ICOM in Paris. Our committee can continue to make a real contribution to the improvement of cities and urban living by working with ICOM itself, with UNESCO and other international organisations. There are so many opportunities for CAMOC. For example: helping to re-build cities and city artifacts damaged in conflict, continuing our debate on migration to cities and much else besides. I wish therefore to continue my involvement with CAMOC and help it maintain its position as a practical, energetic organisation and one of the ICOM s star committees, and one which helps to make a difference to life in cities.
9. Joana Amado de Sousa Monteiro Joana Sousa Monteiro is director of the Museum of Lisbon (2015). From 2010 to 2014 she was a museum and heritage adviser to the Lisbon Councillor for Culture, which included working on the re-programming of the Lisbon City Museum. Previously, she was assistant co-ordinator and manager of the Portuguese Museum Network at the Portuguese Institute of Museums ( ), working on the accreditation scheme for Portuguese museums, and managing museum financial and technical support programmes. She has worked at the Institute of Contemporary Art ( ) developing learning programmes. She has taught museum management at universities in Lisbon, Oporto and Évora. She holds a degree in Art History from Nova University (1993), an MA in Museology from Lusófona University (2000), and an MA in Arts Management from ISCTE University (2010). She is an ICOM Portugal board member (2014). She has been part of the CAMOCnews editorial team (2012). She has been a Board member of CAMOC since As the world is increasingly urbanised, city museums need to adapt and re-invent themselves to be responsive to new challenges. I know what that means more than ever, both through the experience of being part of CAMOC, and from my work as director of the Museum of Lisbon, trying to take it to the next level, from a traditional municipal museum to a modern city museum. As an active CAMOC member, I have learned a lot from editing and reading Camocnews, and participating in conferences and meetings. In return, I would like to continue to contribute as best as I can to the advancement of CAMOC as the forum for city museums and as one of ICOM s outstanding international committees. This is why I am putting my name forward for election to the CAMOC Board.
10. Nicole van Dijk Nicole van Dijk is curator and leads the research and development programs of Museum Rotterdam. In 2016 she led the opening exhibition Rotterdammers and their city for the new museum in central Rotterdam. She is responsible for ground breaking participatory research and community projects. These include City as muse a longitudinal participatory project with Rotterdammers in creative dialogue with the museum. These resulted in more in depth projects focused on citizens and communities including Surviving Carnisse, True Rotterdammer I and II and `Connection by heritage. Nicole lectures and speaks widely about her work. The community led participatory practices she has been developing are recognised as exciting models for city museums both in the Netherlands and internationally. She is currently working with museums including Belgium (Mechelen), United Kingdom (Glasgow and Tate Modern) and Greece on projects around participation. Nicole studied at Art School and holds a master degree in Cultural Anthropology. My experience has given me a strong belief and commitment to the important role city museums have to play in modern society. These experiences drive my practice in making the collections of the museum relevant to and utilising them in partnerships with the contemporary experiences of people living in cities today. This creates a fusion of collections and participatory approaches to programmes and governance which helps shape the role of the 21 st century museum. As a member of the CAMOC board I would explore how we can bring together best practice from all over the world to help us develop more democratic and dynamic roles for city museums. Especially in these polarizing times I see it as an important task for city museums to bring focus to and explore with communities new participatory practices of living, working and socialising together; learning from past and present, shaping a future together.
