6 Ministerial Meeting on Housing and Land Management and Committee s 74 th session Ministerial Meeting - October 2013 Ministers, heads of department, high-level representatives from 47 of the 56 UNECE member States adopted the regional Strategy for Sustainable Housing and Land Management for 2014 to The 74 th Committee session discussed the possible development of a Charter on sustainable housing in the ECE region.

9 SmartCity Concept Definition: The Smart city is a concept with a broad meaning, means City: dynamic in implementing sustainable initiatives, able to grant affordable and healthy housing, and reduce its consumption of energy and emission of pollutants, supportinggreen, inclusive, healthy, compact, smart and resilient human settlements, promoting investments in its different sectors, effectively managing financial resources, withan integrated approach to planning and building,

10 SmartCity Concept(cont) supporting environmentally clean, affordable public transport, higher air and water quality and efficient waste management, sustainable management of urban land as well as transparent land and property registration, Improvedefficiency by the use of innovative technologies and ICT within the different sectors, encouragingthe cooperation of different stakeholders operating in public and private sector, academia, NGOs, regulators, authorities, citizens, need for reliable and open data

11 Key challenges in the UNECE region - outcomes of the report on the survey of member States The report was launched at 74 th Committee s session in 2013 According to the survey, the biggest challenges that countries face are: Inefficient use of energy in the housing sector and deteriorated housing stock; Persistent problems of housing affordability, especially for young people, owing to the financial and economic crisis; Increased damages to housing and human settlements from climate change and other natural and human-made disasters.
