2 29 meet elac people > CYNTHIA MERCADO administration of justice Cynthia Mercado has wanted to be an LAPD homicide detective since she was a kid. Inspired by her dad who is a supermarket undercover security officer, Cynthia began taking criminal justice classes at ELAC s South Gate Educational Center. She quickly added the AJ professors to her list of heroes as she systematically completed certificates in fingerprinting and crime scene investigation on her way to getting her associate degree. She was president of the South Gate AJ Club for two years and especially enjoyed organizing the Thanksgiving Food Drive that benefited needy families in the community. I have been so inspired by all my AJ instructors, Ms. Cavanaugh, Mr. Santoya, Mr. Posner and especially Mel Stevenson, Cynthia says enthusiastically. They have guided my career goals and inspired me to continue my education at California State University, Long Beach. I was even able to go up in a helicopter with Mr. Stevenson. What an incredible experience! Last semester I even got my younger brother to enroll in the AJ program!. schedule OF CLASSES ACCOUNTING 022 BOOKKEEPING AND ACCOUNTING II Prerequisite: Accounting 21. 7 MANUEL LOPEZ < meet elac people art (PAINTING AND DRAWING) Manuel has returned to ELAC to continue painting after getting his bachelor s degree at the Chicago School of the Arts. He tutors art students while enrolling in painting classes to build a portfolio en route to applying for a master s program at either Yale or Colombia. Recently two of his abstract paintings were included in the Vincent Price Art Museum fall student show. One painting sold to an enthusiastic collector. Manuel has also had his work exhibited at a juried group show at the Chicago Art Institute. I enjoyed my art classes at ELAC because the teachers taught me the rules, and then encouraged me to break them, admits Manuel. My goal is to simplify an image so the concept behind a painting becomes important. If you don t tell the viewer too much, they feel like they can fill in some of the blanks. My ELAC professors taught me that art was a profession, not a hobby. They also prepared me to explain my art. That was really important when I transferred to the university and had to participate in all-day critiques. elac SPRING 2012 ART 111 HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ART Note: This course includes several field trips to Los Angeles museums lec 5:15pm-8:25pm Th SINGH BISCHOFBERGER, S S1 112 ART 185 (CSU) 1.00 UNITS Rpt 2 DIRECTED STUDY - ART HONORS :05 hrs TBA KALLAN, L P S :05 hrs TBA TURK, C J S :05 hrs TBA NIELSEN, C D E :05 hrs TBA UYEKAWA, J M S :05 hrs TBA MONACI, S E :05 hrs TBA OWENS, M M E :05 hrs TBA STAFF E7 203 ART 201 DRAWING I 0215 lec 9:00am-11:05am S FOSTER, E S2 209 & lab 11:05am-1:10pm S FOSTER, E S lec 9:00am-11:05am F STAFF S2 209 & lab 11:05am-1:10pm F STAFF S lec 8:20am-10:25am M STAFF S2 209 & lab 8:20am-10:25am W STAFF S lec 10:35am-12:40pm T KALLAN, L P S2 209 & lab 10:35am-12:40pm Th KALLAN, L P S lec 8:20am-10:25am T BRITTON, B D S2 209 & lab 8:20am-10:25am Th BRITTON, B D S lec 9:00am-11:05am F BRONTE, A *SGEC 105 & lab 11:05am-1:10pm F BRONTE, A *SGEC lec 5:45pm-7:50pm T KALLAN, L P S2 209 & lab 7:55pm-10:00pm T KALLAN, L P S2 209 ART 202 DRAWING II Prerequisite: Art lec 9:00am-11:05am F BRONTE, A *SGEC 105 & lab 11:05am-1:10pm F BRONTE, A *SGEC lec 5:45pm-7:50pm M UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 7:55pm-10:00pm M UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 ART 203 DRAWING III Prerequisite: Art lec 5:45pm-7:50pm M UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 7:55pm-10:00pm M UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 ART 204 LIFE DRAWING I 0236 lec 12:50pm-2:55pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 3:00pm-5:05pm W UYEKAWA, J M S lec 5:45pm-7:50pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 7:55pm-10:00pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 ART 205 LIFE DRAWING II Prerequisite: Art lec 12:50pm-2:55pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 3:00pm-5:05pm W UYEKAWA, J M S lec 5:45pm-7:50pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 7:55pm-10:00pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 ART 206 LIFE DRAWING III Prerequisite: Art lec 12:50pm-2:55pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 3:00pm-5:05pm W UYEKAWA, J M S lec 5:45pm-7:50pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 7:55pm-10:00pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 ART 207 LIFE DRAWING IV Prerequisite: Art lec 12:50pm-2:55pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 3:00pm-5:05pm W UYEKAWA, J M S lec 5:45pm-7:50pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 & lab 7:55pm-10:00pm W UYEKAWA, J M S2 209 ART 208 (UC:CSU) 2.00 UNITS LIFE DRAWING STUDIO Prerequisite: Art lab 5:45pm-10:00pm W UYEKAWA, J M S

10 37 meet elac people > IRVING MORAN automobile technology I was working at a Riverside GMC dealer doing oil changes and simple motor work when I was laid off, remembers Irving Moran. I like working with cars, but didn t have any specific career ambitions. When I decided to go back to school, my dad told me about East Los Angeles College. I checked it out and enrolled. Besides good training in auto technology, it has been very easy to get my academic classes and soon I ll be graduating with my AA degree. Irving Moran participated in the 2011 Shell Eco Marathon as a member of the ELAC team that designed and built a fuel efficient car from scratch. They traveled to Houston, Texas, to compete against 62 high school, community college and university teams. Though the ELAC didn t win a prize, they had a great experience and plan to apply what they learned to next year s entry. Irving wants to compete again, this time as an engineering student. The experience convinced him to continue his education, working towards a degree in mechanical engineering. schedule OF CLASSES Astronomy ASTRONOMY 001 ELEMENTARY ASTRONOMY 0325 lec 9:00am-10:25am M W KILEDJIAN, V P AA lec 10:35am-12:00pm M W RAMIREZ, J V AA lec 1:45pm-3:10pm M W PAPENKOVA, M S AA lec 1:45pm-3:10pm T Th PAPENKOVA, M S AA lec 3:30pm-6:40pm W LEWIS, R R *SGEC lec 6:50pm-10:00pm Th WANG, H AA lec 6:50pm-10:00pm M ISHIMURA, M AA 1 ASTRONOMY 005 (UC:CSU) 1.00 UNITS FUNDAMENTALS OF ASTRONOMY LABORATORY Corerquisite: Astronomy lab 6:50pm-10:00pm T PAPENKOVA, M S B1 103 ASTRONOMY 015 ASTROBIOLOGY 3181 lec 3:30pm-4:55pm T Th PAPENKOVA, M S AA 1 Automobile Technology AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 101 (CSU) 4.00 UNITS INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 0338 lec 8:30am-11:40am S BANUELOS, A AUTO 120 & lab 11:50am-3:00pm S BANUELOS, A AUTO lec 8:50am-12:00pm T PENA, O AUTO 120 & lab 8:50am-12:00pm Th PENA, O AUTO 120 #1810 lec 7:25am-9:40am MTWThF BANUELOS, A AUTO 101 & lab 9:40am-11:55am MTWThF BANUELOS, A AUTO 101 #(5 Week Class - Starts 2/6/2012, Ends 3/9/2012 ) AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 111 (CSU) 4.00 UNITS Rpt 2 ENGINE REPAIR AND REBUILDING 1837 lec 1:00pm-3:05pm MTWThF KANGAS, W M AUTO 101 & lab 3:05pm-5:10pm MTWThF KANGAS, W M AUTO 101 (5 Week Class - Starts 2/6/2012, Ends 3/9/2012 ) 3190 lec 6:50pm-8:15pm T Th PENA, O AUTO 101 & lab 8:15pm-9:40pm T Th PENA, O AUTO 101 AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 301 (CSU) 5.00 UNITS Rpt 1 MANUAL DRIVE TRAIN AXLES Corequisite: Automobile Technology 101 or lec 7:25am-10:15am MTWThF BANUELOS, A AUTO 101 & lab 10:15am-12:20pm MTWThF BANUELOS, A AUTO 101 (5 Week Class - Starts 3/12/2012, Ends 4/20/2012 ) AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 385 DIRECTED STUDY - AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 0340 lec 3:10 hrs TBA BANUELOS, A AUTO 120 AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 401 (CSU) 5.00 UNITS Rpt 1 SUSPENSION, STEERING, AND WHEEL ALIGNMENT Corequisite: Automobile Technology 101 or Automobile Technology lec 7:25am-10:00am MTWThF BANUELOS, A AUTO 101 & lab 10:00am-12:05pm MTWThF BANUELOS, A AUTO 101 (5 Week Class - Starts 4/23/2012, Ends 5/25/2012 ) 3193 lec 6:25pm-8:30pm T Th STAFF AUTO 101 & lab 8:30pm-9:55pm T Th STAFF AUTO 101 AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 701 (CSU) 5.00 UNITS Rpt 1 AUTOMOBILE HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING Corequisite: Automobile Technology 101 or Automobile Technology lec 1:00pm-4:05pm MTWThF KANGAS, W M AUTO 101 & lab 4:05pm-6:10pm MTWThF KANGAS, W M AUTO 101 (5 Week Class - Starts 3/12/2012, Ends 4/20/2012 ) 3191 lec 6:25pm-8:30pm M W BROW, P AUTO 120 & lab 8:30pm-9:55pm M W BROW, P AUTO 120 AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 801 (CSU) 5.00 UNITS Rpt 1 ADVANCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE Corequisite: Automobile Technology 101 or Automobile Technology lec 1:00pm-3:35pm MTWThF KANGAS, W M AUTO 101 & lec 3:35pm-5:40pm MTWThF KANGAS, W M AUTO 101 (5 Week Class - Starts 4/23/2012, Ends 5/25/2012 ) AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY UNITS Rpt 3 COOPERATIVE EDUCATION- AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 9007 See COOPERATIVE EDUCATION FOR MORE DETAIL AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY UNITS Rpt 3 COOPERATIVE EDUCATION- AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY 9008 See COOPERATIVE EDUCATION FOR MORE DETAIL
