2 Site and situation: Madrid is located in the Sub Meseta Central Sur, so it s in a raised plain almost 700 meters high. Madrid is inland, far away the coast. Nearby a s m a l l r i v e r, Manzanares. It has a continental climate, cold in the winters and very hot in the summers. It is in the geographic centre of Spain which could explain its capital of the country condition.

3 Urban plan: Madrid, as many other european cities, is the result of several overleaping growing stages, hence the plan of the city is the mix of different plans, most of irregular rather than regular, in fact Madrid is far from an ideal city with little planning and too much opportunism and obscure building business. The city plan could be split in t h r e e d i f f e r e n t a r e a s o f expansion according to three different times. Pre-industrial city 19th Century and beginning of the 20th. 20th Century.

4 Urban plan: Pre-industrial city. The oldest area of the city, it has an irregular plan like other medieval, narrow streets without any planning adapting to the shape of the landforms, a hill in Madrid case. In this area we can find part of the CBD of the city, the old one at least, old shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks and government centers such as Congreso de los Diputados and the Senado. 6 Urban plan: 19th and first third of the 20th. In the second half of the 19th century (1850 and on) took place the first attempts of actual planning. Two new areas were built north and northeast to the old city (Chamberí and Salamanca) These areas have a grid plan, very popular at that time. Nowadays are part of the CBD and high income residential areas. City analysis. Madrid.

8 20th century second half and. Low income level residential areas. After the Civil War and the World War II a strong rural exodus toward big cities made necessary building cheap houses for the thousand of people who emigrate to Madrid. Some worker class neighborhood were built, without any planning creating a chaotic city plan. At the same time the city merged some nearby cities such as Vallecas or Carabanchel.

9 20th century second half and. Low income level residential areas.

10 Residential suburbs, industrial areas and dorm cities. At the last third of the 20th century the city had his last expansion with the construction of different suburban areas: - Residential Suburbs, mostly to the north of the city. - Industrial areas, to the south. - Dorm cities, nearby the industrial areas in the south. Cities like Getafe, Mostoles or Parla. In the 21st century also are built big commercial areas, malls which provide groceries, goods and leisure to suburbians
