Besides the more than 200 Chinese restaurants in the area for employment, there are still some factories. The proximity of the fashion industry has kept a substantial amount of garment work in the local area though most of the garment industry has moved to China. The local garment industry now concentrates on quick production in small volumes and piece-work. Demographics Much of the population growth is due to immigration. Unlike most other urban Chinatowns, Manhattan's Chinatown is both a residential area as well as commercial area. Population estimates of the district go as high as 350,000 residents. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population in the local area continues to increase at a healthy pace. Architecture Architectural features that mark the neighborhood include the Kam Lau memorial archway, which was erected at Chatham Square in 1962 in memorial of the Chinese-Americans who died in World War II. A statue of Lin Xezu, a Fuzhou-based Chinese official who opposed the opium trade is also located at the square. In the 1980s, banks which opened new branches and others which were renovating started to use Chinese traditional styles for their building facades. Land Use Chinatown is located in Manhattan Community District Number Three, a mixed district, with a total land area of 1,077.1 acres, or 1.7 square miles. Land use in Manhattan Community District Number Three, is comprised predominantly of multi-family residential buildings at approximatley 35%, mixed residential and commercial buildings at 22%, open space/recreation at 16%, institutions at 11%, vacant land at 6%, commercial/office at 5% and transportation utility at 4%. The immediate neighborhood is characterized by four and five-story mixed use and commercial loft buildings. Accessibility The Chinatown area is serviced by many subway lines. The Number 6 line runs along Lafayette Street. The N, R, Q, and W lines run along Broadway, and the B and D subway lines are nearby with a stop at Grand Street, which is very close to the subject property. Buses also serve the area along Broadway and the Avenue of the Americas, and there is a cross-town bus on Canal Street.
