3 Dynamo Catharinaplein DE Eindhoven The cultural youth centre Dynamo makes up the north-western corner of Smalle Haven, the area for which Jo Coenen has designed the master plan It is a no nonsense accommodation for Eindhoven s youth, providing advise and information The building contains sports facilities, a fitness room and a pop music auditorium with a capacity of 550 visitors In the daytime, the large window s glass pane reflects the Catharina Church across the street, while at night it displays the inside activities Behind the large window is a square with a huge void above it, around which all functions have been grouped All the floors have elements which are open to the public, which makes for a lively atmosphere throughout the building This void is dominated by steel grids and various shades of red, which form a warm contrast with the building s brown skin The façade is of a roughness that suits a youth centre; its panels consist of concrete pigmented with eleven colours Project is public! 4 Van Abbemuseum Bilderdijklaan NH Eindhoven The 'new' Van Abbemuseum is comprised of the renovated landmark building by architect AJ Kropholler, dating from 1936, and 2 new additions Both the renovation and structural alterations to the older part of the museum as well as the new sections are by the Dutch architect Abel Cahen He has succeeded in organically integrating the old building into a new and larger complex Despite its monumental character, the new building maintains the human dimensions so characteristic of the former museum Massive installations or sizeable exhibitions as well as smaller intimate projects - such as showings of prints and drawings - can all be presented thanks to the variety of the exhibition areas Cahen's distinctive design makes a notable contribution to Dutch museum architecture The museum also has a whole range of new facilities, created by the Belgian designer Maarten van Severen including an auditorium and an education centre, which will accommodate a wide spectrum of public events Project is public! 5 photo: Constantin Meyer Vertigo Department ure Building and Planning Den Dolech AZ Eindhoven When the former Chemistry Laboratory was converted into the new accommodation for the Faculty of ure, Building and Planning, its bare concrete skeleton was refurbished with a curtain façade that strikes a balance between massiveness and transparency The smooth glass skin is a low-tech energy façade, and for that reason it is sealed for 70% On the exterior, the glass has an enamel print of the scaffolding of Gaudi s Sagrada Familia architecture s symbol of the for-ever-unfinished project The bare, sandblasted concrete, which bears every trace of this structure s previous life, is present in the interior, which, by virtue of the generous floor height of over 5 m, has plenty of air The studios are located behind the horizontally organized facades at the bottom of the tower; the faculty staff is housed just above, around a glass-roofed atrium created from the 6th floor down by cutting out segments of all the floors Work rooms have been grouped around this vertiginous hole Project is public! 6 De Admirant Entrance Building 18 Septemberplein 5611 Eindhoven Following the definition of the Masterplan in 1998 for the center of Eindhoven in Holland, studio Fuksas developed four different projects associated with it: the 18-Septemberplein, a square of 7000 m² with an underground parking lot of 2300m² for 1700 bicycles, the Piazza Shopping Mall, a shopping center covering approximately 20000m² with 6000m² of office space, the Media Market, a store for sales of electrical appliances and electronic equipment and the Admirant Entrance Building (also nicknamed The Blob) The Admirant entrance building is at the same time part of a newly developed shopping area Commercial spaces are located on the ground and first level and office spaces on level three and four (plus an additional technical level) Project is public! 7 Central Trainstation Eindhoven Stationsplein AC Eindhoven The current station building was built in 1956 by design of architect Koen van der Gaast and resembles a Philips radio at that time In the view of Van der Gaast a train station had to get a prominent role in the city compared to other transport systems Not the human dimension was the starting point, but the urban space was the decisive factor in the measurements Another striking aspect of his vision was that the station had to have absolutely no recreational function, it was only intended as a pedestrian space: the transition from one transport to another The station is located in the district Fellenoord At about 900 meters from the station lies the Philips Stadion, PSV Stadium On the city center side of the station a statue was placed of Anton Philips, the father of Frits Philips Project is public! 1956 Koen van der Gaast Gemeente_Eindhoven Take the train to Eindhoven 7

9 Kennedy Business Center Kennedyplein ZT Eindhoven This building is a landmark at the head of the JF Kennedylaan It is an exciting construction of glass and steel From the outside, the construction is noticeable because the walls are made of glass from floor to ceiling The tension is further increased because the upper part of the tower is wider than the lower part The façade itself consists of a double skin: an outer skin of glass and then 60 inches wide ventilated cavity and finally the inner skin of double glazing Project is not public! 11 Dentist Practice Paradijslaan Paradijslaan 5611 KM Eindhoven While extending the old villa this plan intends to strengthen the connection to the park area along the Dommel The addition of entrance and waiting area spans the gravel garden The existing façade articulation dictated the width of the steel building, which is pushed as it were, right past a typical chimney For extra room in the waiting room, the rectangular window at the bottom is tilted outward The façade has several layers of transparency: mahogany porch, tilted glass, wood and tarred by an opening with a garden view This project is a good example of how an autonomous extensions can be done, to a characteristic old building Project is not public! 1997 Kemme en Gemeente_Eindhoven 11

15 Silverenberg Kleine Berg JT Eindhoven This gallery is situated along the Kleine Berg in area De Bergen, directly neighbouring the city centre The street image is diverse with traditional as well as modern buildings The binding aspect between these diverse buildings is the limited width The mission was to create a two storey gallery on a former terrace lot of 25 square meters The entrance had to be connected to the street and the first floor had to connect to the original residence of the owner/occupier The original building was made in the 1920s and is symmetrical by design The entire gallery radiates transparency Project is not public! 2002 Van der Linden Stedenbouw uur M Silverenberg Gemeente_Eindhoven Busline 14, 15, 19, 150 from Central Train Station, or a minute walk through the city centre 15

17 Office Loyens and Volkmaars Parklaan 54a 5613 BH Eindhoven The project is an extension to a villa from the turn of the century The new office is connected in the house by a shaft placed in the entrance of the villa This connecting route is a small extension and was made with a form that serves as reception and waiting area In the expansion, with a map in the form of a square, the offices are situated, all with views of the park-like setting, while the idea is that the stately columns of the façades of the business need to ensure privacy In the cylindrical core the general amenities of the offices are located If desired, the plan can be made suitable for multiple tenants with simple interventions while maintaining its own identity and entrance Project is not public! 18 photo: Hugo de Heij photo: Hugo de Heij Office WillemsenU Groenstraat CB Eindhoven Willems en U s recently moved into a striking office building - from their own drawing board - in a small park located along the Eindhoven ring road Striking because the building has, as it were, been raised and put in place, leaving the existing natural surroundings untouched From street level, the view into the park has stayed the same The building has been carefully placed in between the trees, which now lightly touch the façades, giving the users the feeling of being one with the trees The façades have been made of untreated wood In the course of time, the wood will take on a weathered grey look and allow the building to merge with the colours of the trees The large, floor-high, alternating windows emphasize the abstract character of the uplifted box and allow daylight to flood the building, while giving a serene view over the park The interaction between nature and building is also evident in the ever changing reflections of the sky and trees in the large windows Project is not public! 19 photo: Arthur Bagen photo: Arthur Bagen Baekelandplein Baekelandplein HH Eindhoven Commissioned by the city council in conjunction with a project developer and a housing corporation, a very diverse programme has been realized in Woensel-West, a problem area in Eindhoven, consisting of fifty apartments, 3000 m2 of offices, studios, a market hall where stalls can be rented by the metre, a police station, and an official area for prostitution On the Baekeland Square side, the exterior of the complex has been made hard and slick in order to block off the traffic on the ring road Behind this smooth shell the complex opens up around a collective deck with parking space underneath The prostitution area, a regulated version of activities that were already taking place here, is situated out of the way, with its back to the houses Here, the studios are the buffer between this fringe of society and normal life This mix of unlike functions and the way in which the complex stands out from its environment make the Baekeland Square a typical Eindhoven project photo: Arthur Bagen Project is public! 20 photo: Herman de Winter Desque Showroom Klokgebouw AC Eindhoven Showroom and offices housed in listed industrial building Office outfitter Desque found accommodation in the 'Klokgebouw' in the Strijp-S area in Eindhoven This imposing, industrial listed building formerly housed the Philips factory The main inspiration during the refurbishment was based on the transformation from production area to home base for a creative design and interior decorating company The new interior blends naturally into the industrial environment M+R decided on clean lines and sustainable materials The striking concrete structure was bared and kept in view The prominent entrance consists of a large empty space with a sculptural stairway The stairs lead to an area specially designed for meetings, relaxing and consultations, which in turn seamlessly merges into an elevation, from where you have a splendid view of the furniture and design products in the Desque range In this almost unspoilt industrial environment these products definitely come into their own photo: Herman de Winter Project is not public! 21 Evoluon Noord Brabantlaan Eindhoven The Evoluon is a conference centre and former science museum erected by Philips in Eindhoven The building is unique due to its very futuristic design, resembling a landed flying saucer The building was based on an idea by Frits Philips, who originally made a sketch of the building on a paper napkin Frits wanted to give the people of Eindhoven a beautiful and educational gift to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the company that bears his family name Its concrete dome is 77m in diameter In the 1960s and 70s it attracted large visitor numbers, since its interactive exhibitions were a new and unique concept at that time But after several years of losing visitors and money, the original museum closed down in 1989 and the Evoluon was converted into a conference center, opening in 1998 Project is public! 1966 LC Kalff + LLJ de Bever Frits Philips Norbert_van_Onna Evoluon is near at the A2 motorway and is a stone's throw from Eindhoven Airport Evoluon has 500 free parking spaces and is easily accessible by public transport The Eindhoven train station is an 8 minute bus ride From Eindhoven central train station take bus 401 (towards airport) or bus 402 (direction Veldhoven), stop Evoluon It departs every 10 minutes on average a bus from Eindhoven central 21

22 De Ranken Housing Cassandraplein BB Eindhoven At the Cassandraplein, where the mall is being renovated, two housing towers called 'De Ranken' are realized These are located at the edge of the park and overlook the canal With their playful, slim build and height, the two residential towers are real eye catchers in the district Both towers are 52 meters high and count sixteen floors On the ground floor is 1000 m2 commercial space including a health center Project is not public! 2009 Arno Meijs Vesteda Norbert_van_Onna 22

23 Granida PC Hooftlaan NV Eindhoven The former Public Health Service building is a shining example of a conversion of non-standard office space to rental housing Originally build in 1955 by Rotterdam based architect Elffers, in the same period as many former Philips venues In 1997 it wasn't fit for offices any more Therefore the municipality issued a design competition to re-use and re-fit the building for housing The transformation project was won by Kandelaars architects, in cooperation with the developer Woonveste The original structure of the building defined the size of the apartments: sqm This was the motivation to develop the apartments for the luxurious rental market On the ground floor offices and commercial space is created The apartments have a relatively large outside space, on the side of the gallery leading to the entries of the individual houses In a new building this wouldn't be cost-effective This surplus of circulation space is a quality typically found in re-use projects Project is not public! 24 Caverna Molenveld EX Eindhoven Located in the entertainment district of Eindhoven, the residential building Caverna lies with his back against the backside of the bars in the Stratumseind The ragged and messy wall had been in sight for several years, but with the redevelopment of the Smalle Haven this rest area is included and improved Because of noise from neighbouring bars, the houses in this plan are very introverted designed The five studio apartments and 8 apartments all have patios or internal lights, allowing light to penetrate deep into the house By using deel incisions and external projecting windows the stubborn block of black brickwork is sufficiently affected and interrupted Project is not public! 25 Watertower Anton Coolenlaan Eindhoven Quist was asked to design a water tower with a capacity of 1500 m³ Quist decided to construct three white steel spherical water tanks each with a diameter of ten meters and a capacity of 500 m³ The three balls were placed on different heights on the steel structure, and the whole structure is about 44 metre high Because Quist clearly wanted to show how the watertower was put together, the connection lines remained visible In 2000, the proposal of the city of Eindhoven to transform the three white balls into three giant footballs - as part of the European Championship held in the - led to great protests from the architect, and was called off Project is not public! 1970 Quist Wintermans en Norbert_van_Onna 25

26 photo: Ton Langenberg photo: Ton Langenberg A2 Randweg Eindhoven A2 Randweg Eindhoven 5653 LC Eindhoven There is a growing recognition that highways are an important public space Many people make on a daily basis, often prolonged, use of it The image of the highway largely determine the image and quality of the sectioned (urban) area This means that the highway is not only a phenomenon to get people and goods from A to B, simply shaped by the standards of safety and technology The design must be accompanied by functional goals, spatial coherence, legibility, the physical relationship with the environment and achieve an aesthetic experience The vision includes both new works, noise barriers, landscaping and lighting as well The architects use all means to give the way three different characters: the main A2 rages along Eindhoven, the ring road opening Eindhoven and the intersections where the road network cuts through the city of flyovers and underpasses These three approaches each have a different scale and level of detail Project is public! 2009 VHP TonL photo: Ton Langenberg 26

27 photo: Arthur Bagen photo: Arthur Bagen Summa College (ROC) Willem de Rijkelaan EA Eindhoven This Summa College accommodates health and welfare training courses and, after extensive renovation and extension, covers an area of m2 Currently, the school entrance is located in the inner square and the school faces away from the Genderpark In the design, the school and park are interrelated and unimportant side buildings are removed so that the inner square becomes one with the park The school can be recognised by the new entrance on the Willem de Rijkelaan which also serves the park The dated, disorganized interior is completely removed and replaced with a flexible layout Sliding elements are envisioned for the now empty floors and may consist of offices, conference rooms, group rooms, etc The positioning of these elements also allows larger rooms such as lecture halls, instruction classrooms and demonstration areas to be created photo: Arthur Bagen Project is not public! 29 photo: Filip Dujardin photo: Filip Dujardin Parade Residential Tower Dominee Theodor Fliednerstraat BM Eindhoven In Eindhoven next to Peppelrode residential care complex (renovation and extension by Oomen en) stands a 19-storey residential tower Containing 47 apartments and rising to a height of 60 metres, the Parade Tower is a city landmark The ellipse shaped tower is clad in anthracite brick The rectangular lower section is a combination of steel facade with steel grid filling and transparent glazing with semi-transparent filling This contrasts nicely with the colourful facade of Peppelrode Ground and first floors accomodate a pharmacy, medical facilities for doctors, physical therapists and district nurses and parking facilities for the residents A connecting corridor with Peppelrode residential care complex has been realized at first floor level Three massive concrete columns and the elevator shafts are the main bearing structure assisted by slim columns visible in the exterior area The slim columns create a transparent and welcoming entrance with full daylight access Project is not public! 31 photo: photo: International School Eindhoven Oirschotsedijk 14B 5651 GC Eindhoven The design for the international school campus includes both new buildings and the renovation and restauration of existing (national) monument buildings The new building houses the entrance hall, primary school, a basement with a multifunctional (gym) hall, a media library, a dance and drama studio and a NOC NSF sport hall For the most part, the renovation of the five buildings that belong to the National monument contain teaching functions The former gate building will house a day nursery and after- school accommodation The most important buildings in the monumental assembly deserve to remain as free-standing buildings and this fact led to the choice for an extensive basement with the media library being the most important collective programme It is a mystifying experience to see the unspecified manner in which the assembly becomes a logistic and physical unity photo: Project is public!
