President Antonia Bouillette, Ph.D. Principal Deborah Murphy Assistant Principal/Dean of Students Jill Watts Director of Finance Christine Lee Bollettino 68 Vice President of Institutional Advancement Imagine during these most challenging economic times our enrollment is the highest of my seventeen years of being President. Some may say really -- you must be exaggerating! Guess what? I'm not! Sure these times may be turning us upside down, but there is a positive side to the struggle. Our families are returning to the solid values of your parents. Remember the sacrifices they made for you to have a quality Trinity education? Like your parents, they didn't second guess their decision. They did without to have the best Catholic education possible. The same is true today. No vacation, no new car, no new dress can replace the value of a life-changing education. This is the gift your parents gave you -- this is the gift of today's parents to their daughters. This is our alleluia - praise be each of you in this edition of The LINK. Thanks to your unwavering commitment to financially support our students. Yes, our parents are making sacrifices, but without your support, a Trinity education would just not be possible. The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters of years gone by helped bridge the cost of tuition. You are now the glue of today. Our current Trinity women so depend on your generosity. You have not disappointed them. On their behalf I truly thank you for your continued support. What you invest in tells us what you believe in. Thanks for believing in a Trinity education! With sincere love, Amen - alleluia - praise be you! 3 Dear Fellow Alumnae and Friends, FROM THE ALUMNAE DIRECTOR Marigayle Watts Harrington 78 Thank you for all of your support of Trinity! It is so encouraging to work as the alumnae director for a school with such wonderful, caring, dedicated alumnae and friends! As you browse through this issue of The LINK you will get a sense of the phenomenal people I get to meet and learn about. From our talented students to our impressive alumnae to our committed supporters, each one offers so much to this fine institution! It has been another wonderful graduation season at Trinity. The excitement of the festivities permeate the building as they have this time of year for decades! As you read the article (page 7) which was printed in the Trinity Times in 1939, Trinity's mission of educating women leaders is still going strong! Our alumnae continue to be well prepared to succeed in college. ALUMNA SPEAKER AT HONORS CONVOCATION Dr. Kristin Barry Labovsky '00 was the keynote speaker at the Induction Ceremony of the National Honor Societies. Despite her lack of sleep due to her "night call", she gave a very heartfelt and encouraging speech to the students being inducted into the seven honor societies. Kristen spoke fondly of her years at Trinity and how well prepared she was for the pre-med program at Northwestern. Kristen poses with two of her favorite teachers: Ms. Rose Crnkovich and Mrs. Sheila Scott. Please take the time to read about all that our impressive alumnae are doing. Trinity women are bold pioneers in all service, academic and professional arenas. I encourage you to let Trinity know what you are up to as we are so very proud of our alumnae. Keep in touch with your alma mater! Lastly, I wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our generous donors. Your donation to Trinity is greatly appreciated. It makes me very proud to claim that Trinity has a 20% alumnae giving rate. The pages and pages of class donations in this LINK substantiate this fact! Thank you all so very much. 5 SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY MAC AND CHEESE FOR CATHOLIC CHARITES Trinity High School students recently competed during their Spring Spirit Week to earn Olympic points for their class. The Olympics featured a variety of fun and spirit-filled games including a contest to see which class could bring in the most boxes of macaroni and cheese for charity. The Trinity Blazers worked together to collect 1,957 boxes of mac and cheese which have been donated to the Catholic Charities Food Distribution Center in Cicero. Scholar Certificate from Dr. Donna M. Carroll, President of Dominican University, and Trinity administrators, Michelle Germanson, O.P., President and Antonia Bouillette, Ph.D., Principal, the dream was realized! This is truly the blending of two extraordinary institutions. The scholars, who must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or above, are allowed to take a college course free of charge at Dominican University during the summer or after school during their senior year. This will allow the students to experience what college will be like, and therefore make the transition easier. The scholars will be granted early admission to Dominican University as well as a $2, annual scholarship each year for up to four years (in addition to all other merit, state and federal funding). Dominican will allow these scholars to collaborate in speech and theatre classes, observe dissection classes, participate in joint service projects and use Dominican's library and computers. THE CLASS OF MINI REUNION 2009 The 17th annual mini reunion of the Class of '53 began once again with lunch at the Lake Geneva home of Pat Egan Day on Wednesday, June 10, Twenty-seven classmates were joined by Sister Michelle Germanson who brought everyone up to date on Trinity in 2009 while we shared great stories of life in the fifties. The afternoon flew by and was followed by dinner at Abbey Springs Yacht Club. Thanks to Nydia Jones Gardner who passed around a "sign in sheet" and provided the camera for our yearly photo. Hostesses for the "sleepovers" were Pat, Joan Pashall Oriatti, Gigi Healy Conrad, and Carol Lord-Evans. The wonderful brunch Thursday morning was at Joan Oriatti's. 14 FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT Dear Alumnae and Friends, Christine Lee Bollettino 68 Impact! Like so many words in our vocabulary, there are multiple connotations as it relates to our varied worlds. In education, impact may be the way a student is affected by a great instructor, her GPA with exemplary grades, the ranking of her team with a string of victories. In development, it is the gifts committed alums make to their alma mater. As you review the Honor Roll of Donors, please read and feel -- Impact! More than twenty percent of Trinity alumnae gave this past year, fulfilling our goal! Thank you! Your generosity positively affected Trinity's ability to grow and enhance our premier single-gender education. We recognize that in order to sustain this educational growth, both in ranking and enrollment, Trinity will need to seek gifts of even greater impact -- those that are planned and focus on Trinity's future. As we move into this new school year, we ask you to thoughtfully consider having a conversation with your family, your attorney and then Trinity's Planned Giving Advisor about making a gift that will impact future classes of young Trinity students. Your bequest can be restricted, unrestricted, endowed for ongoing years, or given in honor or memory of someone. Please contact me with any questions regarding a potential planned gift. How wonderful to know that your gift not only made a significant impact, it created a legacy! Gratefully, TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL H ONOR R OLL OF D ONORS (Donors recognized are from July 1, June 30, 2009.) This group brings the Dominican message to the student body and the greater Dominican community through the four pillars of Dominican life -- prayer, community, study and mission. Congratulations! Lykendra Johnson '08 has become a dominant force on the Michigan State University's Spartan women's basketball team. In two games in particular, Ohio State and Indiana, she played more minutes than any other Spartan, while recording double-doubles in points and rebounds. "My first year of college was easier than my junior and senior years of high school," writes Katie Grunow '08, an IB program graduate. "It was the little things that made me appreciate how much IB has done for me knowing more than my professor about how Hitler had come into power and answering my classmates' questions about it seeing that the Bio 112 textbook was an earlier edition of my junior year IB Bio text, or being bored in my Calculus class because IB Math had already covered it. I understood organic chemistry when my friends were struggling with non organic chem. What I am basically trying to say is Thank You." So that's it for now. As usual, you have sent in some pretty amazing news. Please keep letting Trinity know what's going on in your life. Your classmates are waiting to hear all about you! THE 2000'S Jennifer Barrera '01 is teaching sixth grade in a Chicago Public School. She graduated from DePaul University with a B.A. in elementary education and a minor in studio art, and received her M.A. in school leadership from Concordia University last year. She hopes to become a school administrator. Jennifer also recently became engaged and is planning a 2010 wedding. Sarah Betts Korbel '02 is a Lia Sophia advisor. She oversees jewelry parties held in private homes for the Lia Sophia jewelry line. Sarah is also the stay-at-home mom of three. Tanisha Hankerson '02 received her doctorate last November in clinical psychology from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL. She is currently completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Miami Correctional Facility in Indiana. SHOW YOUR TRINITY SPIRIT! Purchase for yourself or for your favorite alum. She also played the violin in the Trinity concerts. Upon graduation Edna became the first woman to graduate with a pre-med degree from Rosary College. She went on to become one of three women graduates of Loyola University Medical School in Edna came back to her alma mater during vocation week, "a week whose purpose is to offer vocational advice to the student body," according to the 1939 Oak Leaves article, to inform the young women of the opportunities in studying medicine. After completing her civil service residency in Newberry State Hospital, she was employed at St. Anne's where she met and married her husband Thomas McInerney. The two moved to Escanaba where their six children were born. Edna practiced medicine for over 50 years. She is fondly remembered for delivering babies in the forties when her husband was in the service. When Thomas died in 1972, Edna, in her strong resilient way, went back to work full time and remained working until Strong, humble, determined and most important LOVING are the adjectives that best describe this brave pioneer of Trinity! Please notify Trinity of the death of an alumna or a relative of an alumna. Unless specifically requested, we will list the living, immediate alumnae relations of the deceased. We apologize for any errors that occur in this Memorial section. NEED A GOOD HOME FOR YOUR TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES? Would you like to find a good and safe home for your or your mother's Trinity mementos and memories? We are hoping you will donate any photos, yearbooks and newspapers from your years at THS. We are particularly in need of anything from the 1930 s and 1940's because we have many gaps in the archives from those years. Please consider sending your memories to us. They will be treasured as well as preserved and will help us to better document the many years of this most wonderful and enduring school. Marigayle Watts Harrington '78 will be happy to receive your memories. Just contact her at or mharrington@trinityhs.org.
