Gerlach Published 11:00 am, Monday, January 11, 2016 Photo: Marvin Pfeiffer, Staff / San Antonio Express-News The new Walmart Neighborhood Market under construction at the intersection of Gibbs Sprawl and Walzem Road on Wednesday, Dec. 23, The new store, slated to open in spring 2016, is approximately 40,000 square feet and is expected to employ 95 associates. MARVIN PFEIFFER/ mpfeiffer@express-news.net Walmart is changing its strategy in the Metrocom area, with two smaller Neighborhood Markets on the way in These two markets will run about 41,000 square feet and employ around 95 associates, compared to the traditional 180,000-square-foot, 300-employee variety megacenters. They are built to fill in the gaps in residential areas that the bigger locations can t reach, Walmart spokeswoman Ann Hatfield said. The first of the two new stores is expected to open in the spring at 6938 Walzem Road. Construction began in June. The second will be at Toepperwein Road, with construction scheduled to begin in January and store opening set for next summer. Really, this is is all about convenience, Hatfield said of the markets, which feature a bakery, deli and pharmacy, along with select household merchandise. All, essentially, things you need for daily life. This is geared for quick in, quick out use. While bigger stores have at times been met with residential opposition, such as in Cibolo, the smaller neighborhood store represents a trimmer tool in Walmart s expansion strategy.

7 This is a strategy based on customers using different stores in different ways, said Hatfield, noting that the neighborhood markets are meant to complement, rather than replace, trips to the larger centers for consumers. They re using bigger stores for stock-up trips, (whereas) these stores are meant for fill-in trips. Converse Mayor Al Suarez said he supports Walmart s plan for the region. We have a lot of growth going on, he said, citing several new subdivision projects in the area. Our H-E-B is very packed, so there is a need (for more stores like this). We need both Walmart and H-E-B to facilitate that (growth). Suarez said Converse has grown to a population of 24,000, up from about 18,000 as of the 2010 census. He hopes that neighborhood-size stores will help fill the local shopping and employment gaps that bigger stores can t as the growth continues. It s a concept that's worked in the Northwest area (of San Antonio), and it s one that should work here, he said. Both stores are in the hiring process, Hatfield said. Those interested in working at the Walzem store can apply at a temporary hiring center at 8021 FM 78, Suite 129 inside Ventura Plaza. Applications are accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We look forward to building our team of hardworking associates, store manager Jessica Arriola said in a release. For Hatfield, the choice to place two Neighborhood Markets in this area speaks to the residential, rather than commercial, growth in the area. As neighborhoods in this area grow, that sort of demand increases, Hatfield said of the fill-in store needs. These two types of stores can be a nice complement to each other. Local resident Reuben Gonzales, 49, lives off Montgomery Drive and was doing some last-minute Christmas shopping at the Walmart on Seguin Road last week. I don't mind the drive to this store, he said. But when I m in a hurry, it would be nice to have a smaller store a bit (closer) to the neighborhood.
