Racinowski, Editor/Manager News from De La Salle Institute De La Salle proudly announces that two members of our faculty were among the presenters at the Illinois Reading Council Conference recently held in Peoria. Working in collaboration with two teachers from Back of the Yards College Prep, De La Salle s Bethany Costello Stebelton and Jessica Lafontaine presented on the topic entitled Are We Reaching Our Students in The Way We Think We Are? Among the points discussed were how does society influence the reasoning and ethical judgment of individuals and are teachers empowering their students to field that influence. The four teachers collaborated to get their students to improve literacy skills and reflect on the issues facing teens in Chicago in an effort to find their own voices and transfer them into action. Lafontaine teaches Journalism, Young Adult Literature and American Literature at De La Salle. Costello Stebelton teaches Gender Literature Studies and Honors American Literature. In addition, she also is the Honors Program Director. De La Salle congratulates these outstanding educators on their presentations and thanks them for representing our school in a highly professional manner. Sister Huberta served as Mother Provincial of the Sisters of Mercy, helped lead the charge to build the current hospital and established the first dinner dance in In celebration of its 50th Gala, Mercy Hospital & Medical Center has established a fund dedicated to providing health services to the poor and homeless on Chicago's South Side. More than 550 people attended the annual dinner dance fundraiser, held September 22 at the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave. The event raised $375,000, and proceeds will establish the Sisters of Mercy Fund, named for the Catholic nuns who founded the hospital to care for the sick, impoverished and uneducated. "The Sisters of Mercy envision a just world for all people and they continue to be our source of inspiration and guidance," said Susan Gallagher, of Park Ridge, chair of Mercy Hospital & Medical Center's board of directors. "We are very grateful to our generous donors, whose kindness and partnership enable us to continue carrying forth the Sisters' mission." Mercy Hospital was founded 165 years ago as the first chartered hospital and first teaching hospital in Chicago. This year marked a half century at its current location, 2525 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. It is an honor to be able to carry on the legacy of Sister Huberta and the Sisters of Mercy in helping to care for the underserved in Chicago," said Carol Schneider, president of Mercy Hospital. The meaningful work we do would not be possible without our talented physicians, nurses and staff who consistently deliver compassionate care to the Mercy community. Mercy Foundation, Inc. chair Patrick Huels thanked the top event sponsors, including Walsh Construction, Berglund Construction, Lakeside Bank and ATI/Ambulance Transportation. Franco's, located at 300 West 31st. Street was originally opened by Frank and Jeanine Ruffolo. They grew famous for their Italian cuisine and had everyone coming back for more. Their son, Frank, decided to manage Franco's. Frank put his own style into the restaurant, making some renovations, and changed the menu a bit. Soon, Franco's was attracting wine lover's with his brand new bar addition and foodies from all over with his newly designed menu, as the word spread. Red Cross Calls for Blood Donors With the busy holiday season approaching, the American Red Cross encourages donors to give blood now to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this winter. Between Thanksgiving and New Year s Day, many regular donors delay giving due to holiday activities and travel. This often decreases the amount of donated blood available for patients. More donations are needed in the weeks leading up to the holidays to help stock the shelves for patients like Emily Bratton. After the birth of her first child, she received several units of blood. I know that my life was saved because someone, somewhere, was willing to donate their blood, said Bratton. There aren t words to describe how incredibly thankful I am that people are willing to donate blood to help a stranger. Give patients in need another reason to be thankful make an appointment to give blood. Download the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call RED CROSS ( ). You can make a donation on 10/29/2017: 10 a.m. 3 p.m., American Red Cross Chicago Chapter, 2200 West Harrison Street or 10/30/2017: 8 a.m. 1 p.m., The 175 West Jackson Building, 175 W. Jackson Blvd. EDITORIAL POLICY Editorial material is published at the sole discretion of the editor and on a space available basis. Literacy Volunteers Needed Aquinas Literacy Center, a nonprofit literacy organization in McKinley Park, knows the value that volunteer tutors bring to our organization. Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community. Recently, Aquinas trained 17 new volunteer English Literacy tutors to help address the critical societal need of adult education in English as a Second Language. More volunteer tutors are needed though, because there are over 40 new learners waiting to be placed with a tutor. Aquinas Literacy Center continues to grow as more students register and participate in supplemental learning. Volunteer tutors are needed to instruct limited English proficient adults learners for 90 minutes per week at our center, 1751 West 35th Street. All instruction is one on one and training is provided. Knowledge of a second language is not required; all instruction is in English. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer English Literacy tutor, the next Tutor Training Workshop is: Friday, December 1 (6pm 9pm) and Saturday, December 2 (9am 4pm). Tutors must attend both days for certification. For more information, please contact Sabrina Poulin, Volunteer Coordinator, at or her at Sabrina@aquinas literacycenter.org. The object of this evening is to encourage young people to put down their video games or phones and pick up a book! Faculty members shared some great books and activities with the families in attendance. Pictured Left: 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Balcer with 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students.

The rush is on to find the perfect pumpkin, the spookiest costume, and the best candy for trick or treaters. However, along with all this excitement comes potential fire hazards related to seasonal decor and costumes. Fortunately, fire risks can be avoided by following the National Fire Protection Association s (NFPA) Halloween safety precautions. Halloween brings out creativity in people of all ages. Children enjoy dressing up and going door to door collecting candy, and adults go all out decorating their homes with spooky accents, said Lorraine Carli, NFPA s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. The festivities, however, can be dampened if the proper safety measures are not put in place ahead of time and while out canvassing the neighborhood for treats. From , U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 840 home structure fires per year that began with decorations. These fires caused an average of 2 civilian deaths, 36 civilian injuries, and $11.4 million in direct property damage, per year. Fires can start when candles are too close to decorations or when long, trailing costumes come into contact with candles. To safely enjoy the Halloween holiday, NFPA has created a Halloween safety video that emphasizes preparedness and the importance of flame resistant costumes and decorations. NFPA also offers parents and teachers tip sheets, kids activities, a pumpkin carving template, and more at the Sparky the Fire Dog website. NFPA s simple Halloween fire safety tip graphic is also great for sharing on social media so that people can enjoy a spooky and safe Halloween. To ensure that your loved ones and home are free of fire this Halloween season, follow these safety guidelines: Candles: Refrain from having an open flame. Use battery operated candles or glow sticks in your jack olanterns. Costumes: Choose the right costume. Try to stay away from long or flowing fabric, and remain vigilant of extraneous costume pieces. Decorations: Avoid flammable decorations including dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper that are highly flammable. Keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters. Exits: Remember to keep all decorations away from doors so that they are not blocking any exits or escape routes. Smoke Alarms: Make sure all of your smoke alarms are working and up to date. Visibility: Provide flashlights to children or have children carry glow sticks as part of their costumes. Make sure, if a child is wearing a mask, that the eye holes are large enough so he or she can see out of them. MORE CIRCULATION MEANS BETTER RESULTS! If not, better get going For it is right around the corner, Trick or treat is growing. We used to have the young ones Knocking on the door Now things have really changed, Ain t young anymore. One of children s favorite holidays All through the year. That would bring them happiness and a whole lot of cheer. This year it comes on Tuesday, October the thirty first, When they can go trick or treat And satisfy their thirst. But be sure you go out with em If they are very young, For if I saw them by themselves I had to bite my tongue. We cannot be too safe that night, those goblins are out And the safer we could make it Will remove all doubt. If the treats have been opened Just throw them away Cause you don t want anything To break up their day. Halloween Traditions Date Back Centuries Many Halloween traditions may have originated with the ancient Celts and their priests, the druids. Other civilizations adopted and changed the ancient rituals, such as bobbing for apples or donning disguises. "Our Halloween celebrations are the remnants of the pre Christian Celtic celebrations," said Fred Suppe, a Ball State history professor and an expert in Celtic folklore. "The Celts can be traced back to 800 B.C. to what is now southern Germany and include the ancestors of the Scottish, Irish, Manx, Welsh, Cornish and Bretons. Particular motifs of modern day Halloween such as the date and time it is celebrated, children trick or treat ing, the jack o lantern and bobbing for apples are related to Celtic traditions." When Christianity was introduced to the Celts, church leaders tried to persuade them to abandon their pagan celebrations and adopt the Christian calendar. Because these traditions were culturally ingrained, the church provided alternative holy days such as All Saints' Day on Nov. 1. The evening before All Saints' Day became 'All Hallows' Day,' then 'Hallow's Eve,' with the word 'hal low' meaning holy or saint and 'eve' meaning the night before," Suppe says. "Hallow's Eve evolved to Halloween." Another origin for trick or treating comes from Scotland, where young men in their late teens donned disguises after the harvest. "The Celts called them 'guisers,' which is where we get the word 'geezer,'" he said, "The guisers would march around a house and demand hospitality, which evolved into small children asking for treats." Santa Lucia Visits the Farm! The students in grades 1, 2, and 5 recently visited Sonny Acres Pumpkin Farm in West Chicago, IL. Students in these grades have been getting ready for fall by discussing the change in seasons, looking at the change in the foliage, and using apples and pumpkins to enhance their studies in classes like math and science. The kids love to use hands on, tactile things to practice their number awareness, number sentences and words problems and fractions too! So when they had an opportunity to spend a beautiful day at an actual pumpkin patch, checking out some fantastic animals like sheep, chickens and roosters, and rabbits, they jumped at the chance. There were plenty of rides to enjoy, like the spinning strawberries, a giant slide, a huge swing ride to spin everyone around, and even a bumpy hayride! Our teachers and chaperones got in on the fun by trekking up the 50 stairs to the top of the slide and zooming down the super slide too! It was a fun filled day for everyone and such a terrific way to finally welcome fall! Pictured above top right: Denzel Lee getting his hand tickled while feeding the sheep. Property Tax Relief for Homeowners Greater Benefits to Seniors and Many Other Homeowners. Homeowners most in need of property tax relief are getting it as a result of legislation conceived by Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios. The additional savings will appear on second installment tax bills mailed next year and in all succeeding eligible years. The Exemptions Program helps achieve the common goal of reducing regressivity and increasing progressivity in the property tax system. Berrios emphasized, Flat amount deductions may be a drop in the bucket for a $600,000 to $1 million plus home, but they represent a very sizeable percentage of the Equalized Assessed Value (EAV) of lower market and medium market homes. Berrios consulted with legislators and proposed expanding the exemption savings. The bill received bipartisan support and was designed to increase tax saving exemption amounts for homeowners and seniors and have the greatest positive impact on lower income homeowners. It also expands eligibility for the Senior Freeze Exemption. The Cook County Assessor's Office (CCAO) administers numerous exemptions that are subtracted from a home's EAV, resulting in deductions from the dollar amount of a tax bill. The new law increases exemption savings for the Homeowner and Senior Citizen Exemptions. Its enhancement and expansion of eligibility for the Senior Freeze Exemption does more to continue helping to keep fixed income seniors from being taxed out of their homes. The Homeowner Exemption, available to eligible taxpayers/residents of any age on their primary home, increases from $7,000 to $10,000 in EAV. The Senior Exemption, for taxpayers/ residents 65 years or older, regardless of income, increases from $5,000 to $8,000 in EAV. It is important to note that the exemption amount is not the dollar amount by which a tax bill is lowered. EAV is the partial value of a property to which tax rates are applied; it is this figure on which a tax bill is calculated. The Assessor does not set tax rates. In addition, the Senior Freeze Exemption for low income seniors expands eligibility by increasing allowable total household income to $65,000, from the previous limit of $55,000. There is also a new minimum $2,000 EAV deduction for the Senior Freeze, which will help offset increases in assessed value and help ensure that more seniors benefit from the Senior Freeze Exemption. All exemptions and corresponding savings appear on each year's Second Installment Tax Bills. For additional information regarding exemptions, contact CCAO at or visit the Assessor s website at www. cookcountyassessor.com.
