General Notes: John Lavers parentage has come to light by the finding of an unindexed document in the Somerset Record Office on 14th January This is part of a set of 35 manorial documents from the Lords of the Manor, the Dukes of Devonshire. These documents had been stored at Chatsworth House and were brought to the Somerset Record Office in 1972 by Mr Robert Dunning the County Historian. They comprise contract books, leases, deeds, maps, manorial court books and a series of surveys of Long Sutton and Pitney from One of the surveys is entitled :- "Manorum de Long Sutton - A survey of this Manner taken the second day of January 1719" (SRO DD/X/BB 1-9 C/219) " Robert Lavor aged 42 years Robert his son aged 16 years John his son aged 11 years by lease dated 18th October 1718, a cottage and garden at Upton and a small piece of arrable (sic) land" This entry is very clear and has been verified by neutral professional researchers. General Notes: Apprentice to John Lavis, carpenter of High Ham, (John - baptised 2/3/1777, Pitney, and son of David's uncle, Phillip Lavis who married Betty Culliverd), for seven years for a fee of 8 under Lady Hext's Charity, High Ham. Lady Dionis Hext was the wife of Sir Edward Hext who owned property in Nether Ham (Low Ham) and at Somerton in the seventeenth century. Her charity paid the apprenticeship fees for poor boys. Low Ham is a manor within the Parish of High Ham. David Lavis's birthplace on the 1851 census is given as IRKSEY a location that has confused Lavis researchers for thirty years. On the 27th May 2008 we have finally discovered the answer to this mystery thanks to a visiting Lavis cousin from Melbourne, Australia, Nancy O'Toole. It turns out that less than a mile from David's place of baptism is a tiny hamlet of URGASHAY, just a few workers cottages on a lonely and very remote crossroad. URGASHAY in a rural Somerset accent would have sounded exactly like IRKSEY. Allied to the fact that it is so close to the baptismal location of Yeovilton and that West Camel is less than a mile away the home of David's uncle James from Pitney. Apprenticeship.: 28 Mar 1818, High Ham, Somerset. Apprectice to his cousin John Lavis, carpenter. He was employed in 1834 in High Ham, Somerset. Shoemaker. Tythe Award: 1838, High Ham, Somerset. John and David Lavis recorded as owners and occupiers of a cottage, no 220 on a plot of 6 perch. David married Emma (Amy) Butt, daughter of Unknown and Joan Butt, on 16 May 1826 in High Ham, Somerset. Marriage Notes: Witnesses : William Redford & Samuel Drayton
