Basic Sciences Prize Field: Mathematical Sciences Dr. Hirotugu Akaike (Japan, Age 78) Statistical Mathematician; Professor Emeritus, The Institute of Statistical Mathematics Major contribution to statistical science and modeling with the development of the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) In the early 1970 s, Dr. Hirotugu Akaike formulated the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), a new practical, yet versatile criterion for the selection of statistical models, based on basic concepts of information mathematics. This criterion established a new paradigm that bridged the world of data and the world of modeling, thus contributing greatly to the information and statistical sciences. Arts and Philosophy Prize Field: Arts (Painting, Sculpture, Craft, Architecture, Design) Mr. Issey Miyake (Japan, Age 68) Designer A designer who has made great contribution to the innovative development of clothing by fusing Eastern and Western cultures and applying cutting edge technology Mr. Issey Miyake, with his originality, has recaptured the relationship between plane fabrics and the three-dimensionality of the human body, and formulated the epoch-making concept of a piece of cloth rooted in Eastern culture.
