1 Criticism and Culture MPhil, Michaelmas 2012 Writing and Remembering in South Africa, 1994-present. This course will provide a critical introduction to contemporary issues in South African literature and culture. The focus will be on the period following the country s first democratic elections, and specifically on the question of change. What has changed in the wake of Apartheid s dismantling? What hasn t changed? How do literature and other forms of cultural production relate to these questions? No prior knowledge is required, but students will be expected to read broadly in South African history, politics and literature. Many of the topics to be discussed will open out onto broader issues in postcolonialism and globalisation studies. Seminar topics will be selected from the following (subject to confirmation): Transition, Reconciliation, Tradition, Modernity, Development, Disease, Crime Fiction and the Law, Global Apartheid, the Cultural Logic of Neoliberalism. Primary texts will be selected from recent works of prose, poetry, and drama. Please contact me (cgw26@cam.ac.uk) if you would like advice ahead of the introductory session on Tuesday October 9 th at 2pm in The Faculty of English, room TR26.
