1 The Earth Has Many Keys... -Emily Dickinson Massachusetts Archaeology Month October 2016 Calendar of Events William Francis Galvin Secretary of the Commonwealth Chair, Massachusetts Historical Commission

2 From the State Archaeologist This year is the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act. Over the past 50 years, many archaeological sites have been identified, investigated, analyzed, and in numerous instances, preserved for the future. Some of the most important discoveries include those made during the archaeology of the Central Artery project (the Big Dig ) in compliance with one small, but significant section of the Act namely Section 106. Section 106 requires federal agencies to take into account the effects of federal projects on significant historic and archaeological properties. For more information about the Central Artery discoveries, go to MHC s website at and view the most amazing and stunning artifacts at MHC s online exhibit: Additional links showcasing Section 106 archaeology in Massachusetts include: s_ Tavern_POSTER.pdf This year s Archaeology Month poster and calendar features the title of a poem by Emily Dickinson, The earth has many keys. In practice, archaeology unearths many keys to discovering and understanding the past. How fitting that the image of an archaeological investigation at Emily Dickinson s home in Amherst graces the poster and calendar. For more information about the archaeology at her home, see inside the back cover of this calendar. Find your own keys to the past by attending one or more of the Archaeology Month events. This year s Archaeology Month activities offer many unique, interesting, and fun ways for you to explore the archaeology of ancient Native Americans, or the Colonial, Early American, or Industrial periods. Events include behind-the-scenes at archaeology and faunal (zooarchaeology) labs, site visits, gallery talks, illustrated lectures, walking and biking tours, exhibits, and hands-on events. Many thanks to: Brona Simon State Archaeologist Thomas M. Blazej, Director of Graphic Communications, Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth Jeff Surette, Graphic Communications, Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth Corolette Goodwin, Director, Central Services, Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth Linda Santoro, Archaeology Month Coordinator, Massachusetts Historical Commission

3 Dear Reader: It is my pleasure to introduce the calendar of events for this year s annual celebration of Archaeology Month. This year there are over 50 events that promote awareness of the Commonwealth s rich archaeological past through fun and engaging programs. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps us maintain and preserve our historic resources. Massachusetts Archaeology Month is about archaeology in your community and the world. It is an opportunity to learn about the people who have lived in the area over the last several thousand years. Many events highlight local Native American, Colonial, and Industrial history, while others explore the archaeological past in other countries, and we even have events focusing on the relationship between archaeology and ever-evolving technology. At many of this year s events you can experience first-hand how archaeologists unlock the mysteries of the past. Museums, local historical societies, libraries, avocational archaeologists, universities, local historical commissions, professional archaeologists, and other organizations have planned a variety of exciting events for you and your family to enjoy. Learn about recent archaeological investigations in your town, meet an archaeologist and listen as they discuss their latest projects, explore the inner workings of a museum, or take a bike tour. Teachers can schedule special field trips for their classes to take part in hands-on archaeological activities, or even schedule a virtual field trip to explore the ancient monuments of Mesopotamia. There are many events geared toward children and are enjoyable for the whole family. There is something for everyone who has a curiosity about the past. Remember to keep your calendar to use as a reference throughout the year. Many of the organizations hosting events in October have programs all year. I encourage you to support archaeological research and site preservation in the Commonwealth. You will dig, measure, record, and evaluate artifacts from many different time periods. A perfect activity for home-schooled students. The goal of History Beneath our Feet is to help train and sharpen student s historical inquiry, analysis, and interpretation skills. The lesson accomplishes this goal through conducting of an archaeological dig in miniature based on the methods and vocabulary of archaeological science. The key point is that each of the artifacts found contains clues to their manufacture and date of material, origin, and use. To decipher the clues one needs to ask questions about the size, shape, color, material, and decoration of the artifact and know something about the association of those characteristics with particular time periods to answer the question. For example: What does this artifact feel like? What might it be used for? Do we use this item today? Asking and answering these questions as well as digging in the dirt are the most important parts of this program. 40 Archaeology and Emily Dickinson By Linda Santoro Archaeology is one way for us to learn more about people in the past, and perhaps few people could use illuminating as Emily Dickinson. Often referred to as a natural recluse, Emily Dickinson staunchly refused to show her poems to those outside her closest circle at home, and it was only after her death that she won fame for her poetry. We have her writings and her poems that allow us a glimpse into how she thought, but we also have the place she spent the majority of her life, the Dickinson Homestead in Amherst, Massachusetts. In 2003, Amherst College started the Emily Dickinson Museum, combining the Dickinson Homestead property and the Evergreens property, where Emily s brother and sister in law lived. The Dickinson Homestead was built in 1813 by Emily s grandfather, Samuel Fowler Dickinson. His son Edward, Emily s father, lived there for a short time, but moved after the birth of his two daughters, Emily and Lavinia. The family returned to the Homestead in 1855 and made many changes to the buildings and landscape, including the construction of the Evergreens. The landscape was designed as a 19th century gentleman s farm, complete with livestock, fruit orchard, and vegetable garden. As stewards of all things Dickinson, the Museum has undertaken preservation and restoration of both the properties and the associated landscape, including supporting archaeological investigations. The image featured on this year s Archaeology Month poster is of the 36

41 archaeological field school conducted by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in One of the goals of the field school was to better understand the construction methods of the former Conservatory, pictured in the photo above, which had been demolished in Edward Dickinson had the conservatory constructed in 1855 for use by his daughters. Caring for the various exotic and local plants was very influential on Emily and her relationship with nature, a topic that would come up frequently in her most famous poems. In fact, it is documented that Emily frequently worked at a writing desk in the dining room that faced the conservatory. The field school placed a large trench along the historic conservatory walls, its location having been determined from historic photographs and maps. There they uncovered more of the historic conservatory s stone foundation, a potential builder s trench related to the construction of the conservatory, and artifacts such as ceramics, pipe stems and bowls, and architectural debris. The Emily Dickinson Museum is using the information uncovered during the archaeological field school to inform the future construction of a new conservatory, including the use of historic materials. The archaeologists will return to the Dickinson Homestead to search out the location of past gardens, hopefully locating planting beds and potentially even seeds, in order to further document what was grown at the Dickinson Homestead. All of this information will be used by the Museum to help recreate the conservatory and gardens that so inspired Emily Dickinson.
